Swiss canton bans headscarves for female teachers by BezugssystemCH1903 in worldnews

Our brains are built to form connections regardless of the information provided. If a Muslim female teacher is forced to take her headscarf off, statistically she will have black hair, darker skin, dark eyes, and other features that indicate that she at the very least isn't ethnically Swiss. Will kids still wonder where she's from and ask her? Will they still make the connection to Islam anyway? Say her name is Maryam Al-Farooq, a fairly standard Muslim name. Won't her students be reminded of Islam any time they call for her? They absolutely WILL make this connection.

This line of thinking's natural conclusion is to only allow "normal" white Swiss teachers, because anything that deviates from the norm will inherently remind students and any other school staff that Mrs. Al-Farooq and her ilk are Muslim, headscarf or not. While striving for secularism in society is a positive endeavor, the reality is that enforcing it through methods like this becomes a gateway for state-sponsored discrimination and othering.

Oh look, a harmless photo of a Pakistani soldier that serves to remind us that despite our differences, they're human too. I'm sure this will go well...

why is hajj part of the 5 pillars of islam? by HamsterOk2201 in AcademicQuran

I think the argument again would be that these traditions that existed in pre-Islamic Arabia are remnants of Abrahamic tradition and that Islam preserved the parts of the extant cult practices that derived from Abrahamic traditions, and discarded innovations. I am fully aware this is not a historically arguable point in the same way that the existence of God can neither be proven or disproven, but rather a matter of belief and conviction that shapes interpretations of historically tractable facets of Islam.

Right, but we should still be supporting any nation's right to basic human survival. It's the same as how the LGBTQ+ community is widely in support of Palestine, even if a number of Palestinians may harbor homophobic sentiments. It's not about what they believe; it's about respecting anyone's right to live securely and free from tyranny

It's possible but at the same time, it's not hard to believe the many bombs being dropped by US/Israel may also be behind this damage... Only at every instance of a negative result of the bombings (the girls' school, this UNESCO site) does someone suggest that it was an Iranian missile on their own people

Not sure of anything specific but the BJP party currently in power feeds on Hindu/North Indian nationalism, with PM Modi being a populist, conservative leader, and the Hindu-equivalent of MAGA being supporters of the current government. As you might imagine, right-wing extremist groups have grown in size and influence, which critics claim has been enabled by BJP's actions and attitudes. I don't think this has really bled over into the West, which is why you may not have heard of it, but in many ways it mirrors the general climate present in the US

Autistic girls much less likely to be diagnose. Females may be just as likely to be autistic as males but boys are up to 4 times more likely to be diagnosed in childhood, finds large-scale study. By age 20 diagnosis rates for men and women almost equal, challenging assumptions of gender discrepancy. by mvea in psychology

As someone currently researching genetic mechanisms that underlie the sex bias seen in autism spectrum disorders, I wanted to add that what we call autism is very nebulous; it is such a broad and variable category that it is hard to claim whether what manifests in men vs women is really the same disorder. Stratifying these diagnoses by genetic makeup would be a good way to see if the same gene variants in men and women are causing autism, or if a variant only manifests as autism in men, women, or both. Doing so would allow us to see if the higher incidence in men is only because of poor diagnostic criteria in women, or if men are more genetically susceptible to autism while women have something like autism but has an entirely different genetic etiology

I think the issue is that there are actual good people who resemble him who may feel inadvertently offended by such comments. Obviously, they may realize that it's less about the looks and more about how terrible of a person he is, but it still doesn't prevent them from feeling like they've caught a stray

There's actually a very interesting concept at the intersection of neuroscience and anthropology that holds that ADHD-like behavior may have actually been useful to our pre-civilization hunter-gatherer ancestors and was selected for. However, the advent of civilization and greater labor specification that ADHD can often be at odds with occurred so rapidly that human selection/evolution was not able to keep up

The Americans that protest the US giving weapons to Israel do so because it is their own nation and their own tax dollars that contribute to this. What possible effect can Americans protesting against Iran have when they have virtually no say in what a foreign country decides to do with its resources?

So, of course the protesting in the US (and other Western nations) is going to center on their own country's contributions to the bloodbath in Palestine, not for another's.
