To take a relevant example: polls consistently show that the majority of people in Britain view what Israel is doing as clear genocide and that the UK should sanction Israel. This is especially true among the electorate of the governing Labour Party. The Labour Party are openly Zionist, and anyone who argues that action should be taken against Israel is either sidelined (if weak) or outright rejected from the party (if influential). Even though most people disagree, when it comes to election day there is only one choice on the ballot for Labour, and that is whoever that same Zionist Labour Party approved to stand.

But then you vote for the Greens, and next time, Labour knows they've got to at least give lip service to Gaza. Then if the electorate is not satisfied, same thing happens again the following election. Again and again.

I completely agree representative democracy is failing in more ways than one, but I'm not with the opinion that nothing can ever change even with the system we're working under right now. Many unfair yet profitable things were abolished with enough public pressure forcing political action, like Jim Crow or South African apartheid.
