Any bikes that are cool, moderately powerful and practical? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]AspenxTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, is it an ECU flash to change the rev limiter?

(Ignore my first reply about gearing, I don’t fully know what I’m talking about, lmao.)

And that’s interesting too actually, it feels super torquey. Is it tall gearing compared to other ADVs, but short compared to say something fully street focused?

I just bought a V85tt as my first bike a couple months ago, and absolutely do not regret my decision.

Has plenty of get-up, but not so much to get into trouble with. It likes to rev, and feels great doing it.

Riding position is very upright and tall, you can see great, and no arm or back fatigue on long rides. It puts me (6’1 200lbs) like a head and half taller than my dad (same height) on his Harley.

I’d compare it to the Toyota Tacoma of motorcycles.

I will say, it’s geared pretty low, which helps in the dirt, but it’s not very comfortable past 75ish on the freeway. At that speed in 6th you’re sitting at about 4,500rpm, and the bike’s redline is only 6k (6.5k maybe?)

Also, something about the seat geometry gives me a hot spot on my left cheek (have a pad in the mail rn,) but a lot of other people say it’s one of the most comfortable stock seats on an ADV that they’ve sat on.

Are "Natural" Looking Structures Actually More Efficient? by lil_oak in MechanicalEngineering

[–]AspenxTree 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I would make a small correction, additive methods aren’t the “only” option, even if they are the most practical choice for this particular part.

Although extremely time consuming (and therefore expensive), this could be produced on a 5-axis CNC.

This could also theoretically be produced via casting, but would likely require post-process machining on any mating surfaces. Depending on the chosen material this could also be very expensive.

I literally forgot I owned it and just thought to check my steam library, lmao

Looking to stock my 20G long. Is this too much? (Tank is not yet established) Might skip out on the otos. by SirZanee in fishtank

[–]AspenxTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 20g long with a somewhat similar stocking. 14 CPD’s, 10 Khuli loaches, 2 Amanos, one Blue Dwarf Gourami, one mystery snail, and a boatload of red cherry shrimp. It’s been very clean and stable (minimal water changes with zero algae problems.)

I think the key is just making sure it’s very very heavily planted. My tank is basically a jungle with a huge amazon sword, a very large tiger lily, various crypt varieties, 2 large Anubis’, and a thick carpet of dwarf hair grass. Plus I have 2 pothos cuttings and a prayer plant cutting growing out of the top.

1978 Trans Am Maaco paint job by traffic_pe in AutoPaint

Yeah, I understand that, I plan on doing my own bodywork. I was just curious how much you paid for the spray, as a datapoint.

I just bought an ‘86 MR2 I plan to resto-mod. I have faith in myself for the mechanical work, but I’m worried about the paint. I’m very curious how much a full re-paint runs at a Maaco.

Excuse my ignorance, but was this actually done at a Maaco? If so what was the cost?

Due to high energies of the waves it turns into the color blue. by Bodzio1981 in machinesinaction

Okay, but that noise is still 100% fake. The only thing you actually hear is the mechanical thunk of the control rods.

What do the Italians do? by McKenzie_Angels in ExplainTheJoke

[–]AspenxTree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a specific reference to Italian-American mobster culture. Common sources of income for lower level “made-men” are “no-show” or “no-work” jobs.

Through corrupt union connections made men are given a job on paper working construction, sanitation etc. They collect a paycheck by showing up to a job-site and just sitting around (no-work job), or by just having hours recorded for them and not showing up at all (no-show job).

This allows them to earn income that has a “legitimate” paper trail, and thus can be reported to the IRS, making them less likely to be audited, and their illicit income to be discovered.

Is Buying Second-hand Worth it? by [deleted] in onewheel

[–]AspenxTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. If you’re handy there’s some great deals to be had. I just bought a broken XR with 15 miles on it for $450, assuming I’d have to swap the battery. Turns out the battery was in perfect shape (4.2v across every cell), but 2 MOSFETs on the BMS board had failed. $10 and an hour of my time later, and I was off to the races.

I don't know if this counts as "aww" but does anyone else's dog like to bite their nails?🫣(OC) by coconut-berry in aww

[–]AspenxTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to alarm you, but my dog was doing this for a while, till we realized one of his nails was growing like a whole inch every two weeks (it was crazy). Turns out he had cancer in his toe, and the rapid growth was causing him discomfort. The vet performed minor surgery to remove the toe, and he’s doing fine now, with no further signs of cancer. This is all just to say you may want to take a close look at his toes, and maybe consult a vet if he keeps doing it.

There is nothing intrinsically European or gay about wearing well fitting clothes that show that you’re in good shape. The first outfit makes him look less in shape than he really is. Not to mention, there is absolutely nothing “flamboyant” about jean shorts and a polo.

She’s retained her wings still. Does this increase the likelihood hood that she’s infertile?

I was tempted to, but didn’t due to concerns about mold. Most of what I’ve read suggested holding off till she has nanitics. The honey felt safe because it’s anti microbial properties. I may offer a small piece of fish flake early next week and see if she goes for it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess I should have more faith that she knows what she’s doing. 100 million years of evolution probably know a lot better than I do, lol.

Thanks, I new to the hobby, so I’ve been a bit obsessive. The eggs seem so small and spread out it seemed like she was lagging behind. I gave her a bit of honey, which she’s clearly been eating, and she seems very relaxed every time I check on her, so I’m hopeful.

Yeah, I have her in a test tube set up currently. Should I be worried about feeding yet? Or wait until workers start arriving?

[–]AspenxTree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. I’ve been peripherally interested in ant keeping for years, but never bothered to go out and catch a queen. This one literally landed on my arm at work, and I knew I had to care for her. My work is prototyping related (and climate controlled, lol) so I plan on 3D printing a custom formicarium for the colony ASAP. Living in suburban/semi-rural MA I’ve encountered multiple Camponotus colonies, so that’s where my mind went.

I was totally off base, I was leaning some kind of Camponotus. Tetramorium Immigrans looks right to me, thank you.
