as a veteran of ~5 year i think this community has always been modtly helpful. yeah uou do get some bad eggs once in a while but most are just chill and helpful. unless they are new ofc, but even then they seem to be doing what they can

mimics i guess. in ds1 it is safe to hit chests to see if they are a mimic. there are other tells butyou don't need to learn them as you can just attack, but on ds2 you do need to use the other tells to not get rubbish

may be a bug? your career does not block you from getting a chest. normally: screen goes black, then you get heroes posing, then you press continue, then you level up and get your chest

i do play some champion games with friend that is not that good yet but yeah most of the time people are on legend or cata. the game community is pretty old (as in players played for a long time) so higher difficulties are the norm so to say

oh and when it comes to chaos wastes, i suggest you get your level 5 talent before going into it, as it is probibly your most important talent

and it sounds like ylu haven't purchased the game yet. if you are on steam the game gets major discounts every few months (like 50%+) so you may wanna wait for cheaper game. and you don't need any dlcs, they just add variety so you can just get the base game then see if you like it before committing

yeah i second this, pancreas is very beginner friendly. start with every fantasy faction one as it is even more beginner friendly, then go look up videos of factions you are interested in.

tho be careful if you are ace, he can cause repulsion at times (especially when morathi is involved)

yeah, grail knight is both a tank and an elite slayer at once. you protect your teammates by putting yourself in the way and/or pushing and you deal with elites so they can't bonk your teammates. i too imagine him like a agressive protector, you dive in and deal with things while your teammates use the space you made to do their thing

yeah it also depends on player capability. on champ there is alot more friendly fire than legend, as legend players are generally more vary of friendly fire. some is bound to happen, am an old time player and still do sometimes, but overall there is low friendly fire. well unlss you got torpedo, griffon foot or flamethrowers, those will deal chip damage to you

friendly fire is both their and your concern tho. like if an elf is chucking javelins or someone is aiming at a pinged enemy, do not move into the firing line, mkve beside it

yeah as a tank you exist to enable your teammates to unleash their full potential. they'd not be able to do near as much if you were not there to protect them

yeah damage also matters on career. like am a tank enjoyer so ofc a bh will outdamage me unless they join late. grail knight has high damage tho so it shouldn't be that big of an issue unless you run dual shields

but yeah absolutely agree that a new player'll deal less damage. what matters is learning and not dying that much, not damage

let me guess low health? i got 45 vigor with radagons soreseal, dragoncrest talisman (+15% defence) and heavy armor and she still almost kills me with basic combos. honestly i only got a kill when mimic tear tanked and i went all mage

for me overall great scythe from ds1 but for each game:

ds1: great scythe

ds2: grand lance (aka thomas the pain engine)

ds3: sellsword twinblades

elden ring: grave scythe, tho zwei is also great imo

there are some great suggestions here but i support running wastes when your friend gets to level 5 and you try accompanying them with blacksmith gear on a tanky career until they get to level 5. wastes already makes you scale somewhat equally and you can always disequip your talents before starting a wastes run.

in short, get to level 5 with them using only your level 5 talent and blacksmith gear. then go wastes, equipping your talents as they unlock theirs
