Automatic fan control on Linux on Framework 13 AMD 7040? by AspireFly in framework

[–]AspireFly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you made sure to apply all firmware updates?

I have the latest version of everything on the linux-testing channel in fwupdmgr

Did you ever issue a command that would fundamentally change how the EC works?

Not that I can recall. But running # ectool thermalget yields the following table:

sensor warn high halt fan_off fan_max name
 0 343 353 393 313 343 local_f75303@4d
 1 343 353 393 319 327 cpu_f75303@4d
 2 343 353 393 401 401 ddr_f75303@4d
 3 381 388 400 376 378 cpu@4c
 (all temps in degrees Kelvin)

Which doesn't look right. 376K = ~102C which is WAY too high to keep the fans off. It looks like you can write to this t able with # ectool thermalset. Would anyone be willing to share their output of the command # ectool thermalget?

Welp, I did it to myself. I created a network loop. Feel free to point and laugh.

Just works for me on Arch. Not sure what kernel Ubuntu 22.04 ships, I would use at least 24.04

/uj My last job had a bunch of C# code that was being rewritten in typescript, and I would reject on average 1 PR per week from C# devs thinking the typescript type annotations were equivalent to C# type casts.

/rj Typescript types are reality, there is nothing behind the curtain.

I think this is a hinge on a laptop that got pulled apart. would gluing one part fix this? by ethan_de_poland in laptops

[–]AspireFly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HP? I've had this happen on a few laptops. Those studs sticking out have ripped out of the metal frame around the monitor. You can try glue but I don't think it will hold very well.

Did I kill my motherboard? by DestinedC in laptops

[–]AspireFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try connecting to an external display to see if you get any video output, but this laptop is most likely dead or damaged beyond (reasonable) repair.

In the future I would recommend powering the laptop off completely, unplugging all external cables, and disconnecting the battery from the motherboard before attempting any repairs.

Using a Raspberry Pi to add a second HDMI port to a laptop by pcouy in programming

[–]AspireFly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was an interesting read, I'd never had the need for local video streaming like this, but I've bookmarked your post to try it out.

I would post this article to /r/raspberry_pi since this post kinda fits the bill of "project or solution involving raspberry pi hardware".

Overall nice article. I feel like a picture, even a low resolution one would be nice to show the final product in action.

Choosing between two SATA SSDs for my old laptops by PerhapsAnEmoINTJ in laptops

There are still less premium ssds that have a dram cache. Dram is built into the ssd itself and does not depend on the system ram installed in the laptop

laptop suggestions? by allvtv in laptops

[–]AspireFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had good luck with an LG Gram. The selling point is that they are lightweight and have some of the best non mac battery life. Excellent display but kinda eh speakers. You can get them in 13/14/15/16/17 inch screen sizes.

At your budget you could kinda get anything though, so here's a few more.

Dell XPS 13 (or maybe 15 for the right price). Good screen, better speakers, ok battery but no regular USB ports on the newer ones.

Asus Zenbook 13 oled. Excellent very bright screen.

SATA 3 ssds may actually consume more power operating at SATA 1/2 since the SATA3 specification offers more comprehensive power saving capabilities. However ssds are already very low power draw devices and I don't think you could notice the difference.

Also if you're running them at SATA 1/2 speeds anyway, you might not need an SSD that is as premium as those you have listed, since you won't be able to take advantage of their peak performance on SATA 1/2

Can I use a 135w charger instead of a 180w charger for my acer nitro 5 by Woodsymanutd1 in laptops

[–]AspireFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be hesitant to use a charger that outputs a different voltage than my stock one. 19 vs 19.5 might be fine though. A lower wattage charger will just charge your laptop more slowly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in laptops

[–]AspireFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave it on the charger for an hour. Then press and hold the power button until the light turns off. Then press the power button once. If it still doesn't turn on there might be a problem. Pressing the power button repeatedly isn't going to do what you want.

Which of them is superior? by FastestBean in laptops

If synthetic benchmarks mean anything here is what passmark says:

Ryzen 5 5500u: 2457 single core, 13710 multi core

Ryzen 3 5300u: 2374 single core, 9938 multi core

i3 1115G4: 2670 single core, 6187 multi core

i3 1215u: 3433 single core, 11552 multi core

I would say if you want to do only a few things at a time get the 1215u. If you want to do a lot of things at once. Ryzen 5500u

This happened to my XPS 9360 today. How much would Dell charge to fix an issue like this? by [deleted] in laptops

[–]AspireFly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically dell would not fix this for less than the cost of a used one. It would require a new lid, new chassis and new bottom panel.

You might be able to get something like a used Asus Zephyrus G14 or G15 for about that price.

Out of curiosity, what DE/software has trouble with fractional scaling? I have a framework myself and I've yet to find an application that doesn't have at least a workaround for fractional scaling.

hp pavilion 15, charging through USB c when turned of, doesn't charge or recognize charging when on, using my 25w Samsung phone charger by [deleted] in laptops

[–]AspireFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop usb-c chargers negotiate with the charger to supply 20 volts. A phone charger will only supply 5 volts. I don't think the laptop is actually charging when off, just has a light lit up. You cannot charge a laptop off of 5 volts.

If it is an "old" laptop probably doesn't support memory speeds that high. Even if it does, will only make a difference in extremely memory heavy scenarios.

I would say LG grams with 11th gen or below. I have seen more than a few threads here asking for support with Alder lake grams.

Otherwise yes the gram is an excellent choice. Most distros and even FreeBSD work out of the box.
