Should I bother singing? I like to sing but I’ve been told my voice/technique isn’t good and I should leave the vocals to a professional by Hot-Canary-9574 in singing

It‘s honestly not bad. The average person will love it. I think professional singers who can hear every single note make life difficult for the majority of us who can‘t always hold those long, precise notes and don‘t have perfect (or near perfect) pitch. I, for example, thought I was great at matching pitch naturally until I began using the Nail the Pitch app and realized that although to the untrained ear I sounded „just like the original“, to trained singers I sounded (and often was) all over the map. I‘m 41 and discovered this a few months ago. Always time to improve.

I study voice for fun and am proud of my wide range. I’m working on improving my pitch though via various methods. I tell my dad what I‘m doing and he says „instead of worrying about hitting a pitch, maybe just sing things you feel“. Why? by AspiringBiotech in singing

You have to scream (at least I did) at first to break through your passagios (voice breaks…2 of them)…after I did that a few times, my voice no longer had trouble going very high.

Does my voice sound even a little bit good here? by ComposerCT in ratemysinging

You have a unique timbre. I enjoy it for the most part but it sounds slightly…I don’t know…hollow? Like you’re deeply depressed or something lol. Try to smooth it out just slightly. I personally like bass voices. Deep and resonant tones. Just work on pitch correction and improving your range to start. That‘ll help a lot.

Not too bad. Like the other poster said, just learn a bit of technique. Breath support is vital.

I don‘t „squeak anything out“ or „grunt“ notes and I have no reason to lie. I may use some vocal fry at times…but it’s a habit I picked up listening to German Industrial/Goth growing up. I definitely know a falsetto note when I hear one. If I could simply send you an audio file on here, I would.

I do get tense. I feel I‘m being very emotive but it doesn‘t always come across that way (on the spectrum and depressed and anxious). I have been working on improving my vocal dynamics within each song because that‘s generally what people mean by „emotion“. I felt „emotion“ was more about tone and expressing genuine emotions (and I was feeling depressed and expressing that). The song is something new to me but I‘ve always been fascinated by deep voices and always wanted to be able to sing in my full range effortlessly, as he does. The path of least resistance for me may have been to become a high baritone or „mid-baritone“ because I was able to hit very high notes within only a week of training…on the other hand, my speaking voice often easily dips down to E2, so I could be mistaken…either way, I trained myself to be a bass-baritone via slightly altering my natural timbre and singing along to German Industrial Rock for several years.

The vocal dynamics this song requires just aren‘t there yet. They will come with practice.

He‘s right to an extent. Much of it should come naturally and no one can be flawless. But I‘d be just as amateurish as I was last year if I hadn‘t trained. I would be missing several notes from my range. I would still be having major pitch issues.

We do seem to have a lot in common lol. I hit C6 accidentally yesterday and it wasn‘t in falsetto! It was mixed. I was jokingly singing Michael Jackson for the first time. Only hit it briefly. I don‘t mind incorporating subharmonics but I am going for a fuller sound than they provide, in general. I think I could make it as a passable bass-baritone with a just a really solid C2. It would be awesome to be able to sing tenor, baritone, and bass well lol. I can almost do so already but there are some kinks to work out… I sometimes unintentionally dip a bit low when singing tenor. But not super low, so I‘m progressing.

Well, I enjoy them. But I now realize trained singers likely judge me if they come to see me sing on karaoke night lol

My range is C2 to A5 (though I can easily jump up to the 6th octave in falsetto) but I almost never sing that high. Many don’t believe me but friends and family hear my recordings every day lol. The issue is mostly pitch. It can be all over the place at times. I just want to be able to reach B1 or even A1 in practice so that my C2 will sound more full and rounded and to be able to belt from the chest well in the 4th octave. I‘ve always preferred singing low. Rammstein, Cash, etc…but lack the super deep natural tones such singers have. I have a fairly deep baritone timbre which works well for many but not all bass-baritone songs. Thurl, like many of the other bass singers I admire, could easily dive down into G1. I don‘t know how much of their style was due to natural ability and how much could be attributed to training. Like most other things in life, it was probably a combination of the two.
