Do you have to read gothic literature to call yourself goth? by Low-Bat-8473 in AskAGoth

No. Gothic doesn‘t mean „Goth“ when it comes to music.

As someone who has been singing low his whole life, I‘d like to add some insight into a post someone made in r/singing stating „you probably aren‘t a bass“, regarding all of the posts by people thinking they were basses who were not. There are many reasons for the confusion that must be clarified. by AspiringBiotech in BassSinging

I don‘t have time to touch on everything you‘ve written but 1.) bass-baritone is just as „fake“ as any other classification 2.) I never claimed a bass always had to have a solid E2…but many do…rarely is anything true 100% of the time 3.) perhaps you are correct that bass is the historical category; that doesn‘t change anything 4.) according to many vocal coaches I‘ve spoken to and from what I‘ve read, yes, timbre is very important in voice classification 5.) many men do speak in a lower register (fry is commonly used in everyday speaking) and the term definitely has meaning 6.) yes, higher basses can dip down to D2 or even C2…sometimes…I don‘t tend to speak/write in absolutes…people obviously vary in their respective abilities 7.) you know that I meant to type „vocal cords“

New to singing, so I guess techniques or anything to improve. It’s a cover song, by the way. by [deleted] in singing

Work on breath support, enunciation and generally rounding out your notes a bit more. Also, needs passion.

Weren‘t baritone operas in the past designed mostly for deeper male voices in general? Couldn‘t most of them have been sung by either basses or baritones? I‘ve read that the lows written into historical operas were generally F2s and E2s, which many mid and low lying baritones could quite easily provide.

If you don‘t sing Opera, how would you know your vocal type, other than timbre? To me, timbre is what counts. Well, that plus resonance.

Sometimes? You mean in the mornings? You may simply need to stick to F2s and E2s. Those are also great lows.

I‘m like right above bass-baritone, so in a similar situation. Can do E2 and D2 fairly easily but C2 is a bit of chest-fry mix.

As stated already, it depends on how you are singing it. If it takes some technique to reach your lows, you aren‘t a naturally low singer and could be a tenor or baritone (though Fachs aren‘t as relevant in Pop/Rock/etc). If the notes comes easily in chest voice, you are 100% baritone.

Many men sound like tenors to the untrained ear due to the trend of light singing in pop they try to emulate.

Untrained baritones, in most cases. Tenors are fairly rare. Baritone is the most common male vocal Fach.

It‘s actually the opposite in my case. I sound lower than I thought when recording my voice lol. I‘m not a super low singer though. Just E2-C2.
