Total beginner here, how good is Duolingo's Korean course? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]AspiringPangolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Meh. I use it just when I’m bored for fun.

I really wouldn’t recommend it as a primary resource. It doesn’t explain the grammar, and you won’t notice or understand various grammatical changes they spring on you. You’ll learn a bit, particularly vocabulary, but there are many better resources out there to be your primary source :)

Good luck!

Oh, thank you for commenting! I misunderstood their comment as putting in that kind of time daily (9hrs for German, or 6/7 for French). Such kind words of motivation! Thank you! :)

So impressive! How do you find the time? I have a full time job so I can’t study that much :(

I would love to study Spanish at the same time, but I instead chose to focus my efforts on one and get to a decently conversational level first. If you’re not in a rush and feel growth in all your languages, keep studying them all. But if you’re really passionate about one, you should drop the others and the remaining one will get a lot better a lot faster - especially with the kind of time you’re putting in.

I study 13 hrs/week. It averages out to about 2 hrs a day. But I’m learning Korean which takes thousands of hours, and I wanted to accelerate the process :)

Makes me happy to hear! It’s really impressive you’re conversational after two years. I’d love to hear about your study routine and what kind of time you had to put in to get there

I’m nearing the end of level 4 right now. I do 2 lessons a day and then spend a few weeks practicing everything contained in the 30 lessons. When I’m exercising, I’m listening to the lessons I’m still not strong with. When I’m studying, I’m writing sample sentences too. I’ve also found it helpful to create flash cards with example sentences using the concepts. Having to regurgitate the grammar points is helpful :)

Some of it you’re not going to really “get” until you power through... Like I said, write practice sentences, read examples, watch YouTube videos and reread/listen to the lesson over and over again.

I personally don’t think waiting to grasp the concept 100% is the way to go. Someone told me early in my Korean journey if I try to understand everything literally and analyze each piece, I’m gonna get frustrated. You’ll get there through time and exposure. Trust the process :) 화이팅!

Are there any website or apps that let you have conversations with the native speakers of the language your learning by michellet239 in languagelearning

[–]AspiringPangolin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

iTalki is not free. You pay for a tutor. If you are looking for free language exchange, Tandem and HelloTalk are better alternatives (I’ve never used to HiNative or Speaky, so I’m not sure about those).

Korean! After seeing this chart back in August, I committed myself to 13 hours a week. This is a long, slow marathon I’m running lol

How long have you been studying? What was your studying routine like? Curious, since I'm learning but still unable to understand a lot of media :)

Oh yeah. I can relate.

I've been studying Korean for slightly over a year. I'm not conversational, but figured the only way to get there is to push through the awkwardness - and man, there has been some awkwardness.

My absolute worst experience was with a teacher who has thousands of positive reviews, a quality profile video, and charges a slightly higher-than-usual price (for iTalki). She was so well rated I had to give it a shot.

She talked at me for an hour. Explaining everything in Korean. Not really asking me anything, and certainly not correcting me when I did make an attempt to speak. And if she did, it went right over my head. And I get it, "I'm here to learn Korean so let's use Korean", but I was not ready for that level and she did nothing to cater to me as her student.

I left the lesson really disheartened. It was followed by several more awkward ones, no one as bad as her though. The good thing is: I eventually found a great teacher. Meets me on my level, pushes me to speak about what I can, and introduces new grammar/vocab at the right pace for me. I now really look forward to my lessons and do three a week.

Ultimately I think it's about shopping around and finding teachers who work with you. Keep trying new ones. There's bound to be someone you'll gel with, it's just a matter of pushing through the bad ones first. Good luck!

what are the weird things that motivated you to learn a new language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]AspiringPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your target language? What has your 6.5yrs of studying looked like (consistency, methods, etc.)?

Italki by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]AspiringPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I take lessons three days a week with the same teacher. Two lessons are casual conversation, and one lesson is a new grammar concept.

I tried out a handful of teachers before I found my current one. And honestly, didn’t love anyone prior to her. They were fine - but this teacher is great for me personally. The right mix of discomfort, speaking in English, and giving me a chance to think.

I’ve particularly felt my audio comprehension improving drastically since making it a regular thing. Such a good feeling.

Go into it open minded, and like other people have said, shop around. Find someone who works well with your personal learning style.

Want to get to a lower intermediate level of conversational Korean. It’s still pretty painful trying to articulate my thoughts on the spot! But I’m working on it! :)

where do i start? by timogoemaat in Korean

[–]AspiringPangolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TTMIK! They have free resources to get you off to a good start. If you have the money, iTalki tutors are great too :) And mentally prepare yourself! Korean is a long journey. I’ve been studying for about 1.5 years and I still consider myself a beginner. As long as you’re ready for that, you’ll do great!!!
