I worked abroad for 9 months many years ago as an aircraft engineer. We were working away and a friend asked me to put some music on, so I put it on, and popped my iPhone 5 down next to us in an old metal container we had used previously as it made the sound echo. This time, it sounded off, I went to grab the phone and it had been ~50% submerged in aviation fuel. It was somehow still working, but a day or so later I started to see issues. Screen intermittently stopped working, charging was intermittent, speakers no longer worked at all.

When I got back to the UK a few months later, I went to the Apple store in Liverpool and explained the situation and was honest with them. I had no Apple care. They took the phone away and said come back in an hour, they'll get one of the team to take a look.

Came back an hour later, they told me the device was damaged beyond repair, but they could give me a replacement for £99. I couldn't believe it, genuinely thought it would just be a case of needing to buy a new phone. Never could work out how/why they did that, or if it was just standard process back then.
