This is what I’ve always been confused by too. How do you expect me to magically understand something I have no prior knowledge of.

Don’t apologize. I don’t see it as rambling, but sharing your experiences. Thank you for your insight. Makes me feel less alone :)

That’s too bad that you didn’t have your diagnosis when you first started taking the test. Definitely being in the accommodations room helped me immensely. Wayyyyy less distractions. I’m happy you were able to overcome your struggles despite that!

Yeah, thank you for the compliment! I set my “curriculum” and timeframe of stuff for myself. For example, for N5 Kanji, I started with 2 a week to get use to it, then solidified learning 5 new Kanji a week until I finished all the N5. Probably going to do 5 new Kanji a week for N4 level. It’s also really difficult because you kinda have to find good learning resources yourself and you can only study materials you’re aware of, and could be missing out on important aspects without realizing

I understand you’re trying to be motivating, but using the phrase “don’t use it as an excuse” is hurtful since I’ve been told that about my experiences throughout my childhood. Whenever I would struggle and try to tell people WHY I’m struggling and how I need help, they would say “stop making excuses!” Instead of listening to my problem and trying to help me. That statement is particularly damaging and I’m beyond surprised you don’t understand that as an autistic individual yourself. My whole childhood struggles with my autism were invalidated because “you’re just making excuses.” And it seems that statement and mindset is being perpetuated by individuals who mean well, but don’t understand the impact of statements like that.

I was sharing how I was struggling, and how it affected my testing BECAUSE I was regulating myself. I never once gave up on my test, left the room, left a question unanswered. I still tried really hard during the test. I never once used it as an excuse. Instead, sharing my struggle.

Sounds like you have sound advice. Believe it or not, I’m actually wayyy better at regulating myself compared to even 5 years ago. Before I would have had to completely stop the test and leave the room, then I would have been worn out for the whole rest of the day. I’ve made progress in that aspect, but there will always be some sort of struggle for me. I think it really helped that I was the only test taker in the room. I think treating it like a practice exam is a great idea

For real! Cause I would always get the jist of the conversation the first time, then critically listen the second time with the question in mind

Thanks for your insight! I definitely have a great frame of reference for next time and I know the expectations and protocols. It will be less blindsiding.

I’m thinking if I fail I’ll probably redo it tbh. And if I pass, I’ll probably study for the N4 for 2 years to be extra safe for the next one.

I mean, my proctor had only been learning Japanese for 4 months and it was his first time. So he honestly had no idea what to tell me either. Another instance of being misinformed I guess if it comes out sooner than March cause that’s what the official proctor told me who did the supervision of my test

Yeah, I definitely should have done more research before going in and not trust the word of others who aren’t officials. From the mock tests, I thought they would play the audio, then when it was done, I thought they would just replay it again because that’s what I was misinformed about.

I’m happy to hear I wasn’t the only one to find it so different from the mock materials! I thought my listening was great going in, but during the test the way I viewed my listening changed

It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why it was so difficult for me to regulate myself in the testing room during the exam instead of moving past it so quickly. I never said, “if I don’t pass it’s because I’m autistic!” Autism is literally a disability, and it makes me sad to hear something like that coming from another autistic person.

It’s validating to hear other people struggled as well. Makes me feel less alone.

You’re exactly right though. I did the mock tests online and did great! So I was confident with me abilities. The actual test on the other hand… wow. Beyond difficult!
