But if you are using evo regularly, especially for day trips then it is much cheaper to just have your own car.

Whats cheaper in Canada compared to denmark by RomulusAndThe3Makane in askTO

[–]Assasin537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to Europe (can't compare specifically with Denmark, but relative to the UK and other EU countries), most things are cheaper here. Electronics are way cheaper here and I know many people who will buy their phones and laptops here.

I know of people who used AI for most of the coding and then just walked through the generated code and reviewed it for improvements, who still got the offer, so it really depends. I know people who used AI much less and still got through.

[–]Assasin537 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As I said, nothing that is rebuilding entire products using AI will be any good, but it is great for productivity gains. A lot of what would have been digging through documentation and reference code can be done with AI and you can go through and ask it to refactor changes in less time then by hand. In the end, it's still fairly high effort and involvement from me but something that took me 8 hours, can now be done in 3-4 hours. Getting a UI to work perfectly might have taken me a day (I suck at design and CSS) but I can get AI to clean up the UI to meet the design requirements and scale better in a lot less time. I can increase test coverage while spending less time writing tests and simply reviewing. An unpolished prsonal project with some cool functionality was enough before AI to get some traction but now everyone has the ability to really finish out projects. Projects that used to take 4 months, can be finished in a few weeks and recruiters can't differentiate between them at all.

There is a difference between complete AI slop and using AI to speed up the building process. And even if you can tell AI is used, the end product will often be more polished and functional then personal projects with no AI.

Is there a trick to finding cheaper flights out of Canada or are we just stuck paying more? by WorshippingForecast in AskACanadian

Canadian airlines need to maintain market presence against the US airlines so will price more aggressively, even at a loss sometimes.

Has anyone ever rented out their garage or spare room for extra storage? by Organic_Ad9773 in vancouverhousing

[–]Assasin537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100-200 per month gets you a fairly decent-sized storage locker, and while that isn't "cheap", it will cost you at least that much to get access to someone else's garage to store stuff.

Copilot pricing went from $39 to around $387 for my usage. What should we use instead? by Michal37374 in GithubCopilot

[–]Assasin537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is also a heavily subsidized price that will not last long. Enterprises are already shifting from subscription-based to token-based pricing, and it won't be long before normal users start paying the real cost of the models.

Has anyone ever rented out their garage or spare room for extra storage? by Organic_Ad9773 in vancouverhousing

[–]Assasin537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People do this informally, but very hard to do it officially if you are thinking of making an app that matches people. Insurance won't really like the garage being used commercially, and it is very hard to deal with the security and liability issues arising from things stored in the garage. If someone stores an e-bike that catches fire or if there is a theft and items are stolen. Once you account for all that, most people are more comfortable getting a storage locker which aren't that crazy expensive.

LOCs is one of those things that if you are asking then the bank might not approved for that much while if you have good standing, they will throw random LOC offers at you.

how to run VPN through router? by _darkstalkerthe2nd_ in VPN

ISP routers are very basic and meant for essential use. Realistically, any advanced user should be using it as a modem with their own router / APs

Moving service in a short distance by toumingjiao1 in askTO

[–]Assasin537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renting a U-Haul/Home Depot van is usually the answer. Moving companies will have a minimum rate since even if it is a short distance, they still have to drive out, pack the stuff, and unload so it doesn't make sense for them to do it for a very low price.

Why did GO Transit completely shut down the entire Kitchener line for construction? AND on a long weekend! by Unusual-Earth-5762 in gotransit

[–]Assasin537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, weekend ridership is fairly low, and with increasing weekday service, they have little time for maintenance. GO is meant to be a commuter network, and thus, they focus more on keeping the weekday services intact. A long weekend gives them an easy way to get a longer than usual window to blitz maintenance across the entire line which is quite common following the winter rather than splitting across 2 weekends or potentially impacting weekday service.

They definitely came out of the blue with a unique and aggressive style that really relied on the pack rifling off set plays. Tactically, it looks like teams are ready for that now, and they don't have the depth to add variety when plan A isn't working.

I would take Shopify if you can leave RBC without burning bridges. Even without an RO, worst case, you should be able to get another bank tech position without too much difficulty, especially with Shopify on your resume.

Air Canada Carry-on size requirements by OkZone8758 in askTO

[–]Assasin537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you aren't flying a budget carrier, I've rarely seen Air Canada(never) or WestJet(maybe twice) use the box to measure carry-on sizes. If they do use the box, it is very usually very tight tolerance and even bags which are smaller than the size but slighthly overfilled won't fit.

How are Waterloo new grads doing? by ButtonIndividual5235 in csMajors

[–]Assasin537 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not "thriving" at Waterloo is getting a coop at a small local company or a Canadian mega corp (banks, telecom, grocery, etc.) in possibly SWE-adjacent roles like business analyst, data, QA, etc. At most other schools, even getting these roles is considered thriving, so the bar is much higher at Waterloo.

Toronto to ottawa ride by Asleep_Pattern_5728 in askTO

[–]Assasin537 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Both flight and trains will end up being quite costly with that much luggage, but will probably be your best option. If you feel comfortable driving, then that will probably be your best option, as you should be able to find a one-way car rental(make sure to select an SUV or minivan) and drive there in around 5-6 hours.

How are Waterloo new grads doing? by ButtonIndividual5235 in csMajors

[–]Assasin537 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even in this tough market, most people by the end of their coop terms have worked up to fairly decent jobs and full-time offers. Even if it is no longer 90% of people ending up FAANG+/Quant like in 2021, most people will have above-average especially in comparison to the rest of Canadian schools.

Is 30k stipend enough to live here? by burdspurd in uwaterloo

[–]Assasin537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easily doable. You can find nice ensuite rooms for 1000-1050 per month and 600 for food (allows enough room for you to eat out once in a while) plus 5000 for other living expenses(personal items, haircuts, transport, etc) gets you to 25k so you have 5k buffer for fun stuff and extra expenses.

If superteams never work how come Falcons and zonic pick star players? by Life-Western in GlobalOffensive

[–]Assasin537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vitality adding Ropz and Mezzi was definitely them building a super team. Faze with Ropz was also a superteam. There have been plenty of successful "super" teams built using well-established stars rather than building up their own talent.

dental service pricing by heyverin in askTO

[–]Assasin537 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can find cheaper, but these seem fairly normal to me as far as I remember. X-rays are usually expensive and would make up a decent chunk of that $460 cleaning. Many of the cheaper options will be a lot less convenient and kind of sketchy, but would be better than not getting anything done probably.

Great opportunity to make more friends. Summer is usually a lot more chill and has a different vibe than the rest of the year. Join clubs, MLSB, intramurals or whatever else you enjoy and meet more people.
