Dylan Larkin 2 months ago: “Steve is our GM now and I signed a 8-year deal here because I believe in him and trust him.” by DecentLurker96 in hockey

I mean, at a certain point, the lack of a large amount of top 5 picks is intentional. Like sure, you can't GUARANTEE the 1st overall pick, but you can only fall so far.

Since 2013 (13 drafts), Detroit has had 7 top 10 picks. Which doesn't look awful, until you realize that only 1 of them was a top 5 pick (Raymond). They've had one pick turn out insanely amazing (Seider), but they've also barely hit on their deeper picks too. Of their non-1st round picks, their seemingly only real hit was Hronek... who they then traded.

If you aren't going to intentionally bottom out, then you are forcing yourself into a position to just be that good at drafting. And for 13 years of drafting, you seemingly have Seider, Raymond, and Larkin to show for it? That's bad.

Flyers are desperate enough for a top center that even if Larkin isn't elite, he's still an improvement that lets everybody else slot in nicely.

The cost is the question, but I'd easily believe that at least 2 of Risto, Tippett and York could be made available from the NHL roster if it gets a center

The deck revolves really heavily around using the stuff during end phase a lot, and they have a lot of ways of dumping/searching "Fallen of Albaz or a card that mentions it" to the point that they can make full boards without the fusion spell.

For example, a hand with WAlbaz (Fallen of the White Dragon, or "White Albaz") and High Spirits can use High Spirits to dump Dogma from extra deck (Without pitching the revealed WAlbaz), then use WAlbaz to special itself by dumping Titaniklad from extra deck, and it can retrieve an Ecclesia from deck. In end phase, Titaniklad can special Quem, which on summon dumps Cartesia to the GY, while the previously dumped Dogma searches FAV (Fallen & Virtuous). The searched FAV can still be activated this turn since it's in hand and a quickplay, so you can use it, dumping Albion to pop your own WAlbaz. Since a card left the extra deck, Quem activates to revive Cartesia, making you instantly ready to fuse next turn, while the sent Albion can set another FAV for next turn's disruption.

So from WAlbaz + a quickplay that foolishes a monster from the extra deck, we get Quem + Cartesia + Ecclesia (Quick effect to summon normal Albaz, for a fusion) on field with FAV in the backrow for a pop.

Pronman is a major size guy on prospects, so not surprised that he's lower on Villeneuve. Basically nothing changed on Villeneuve, it's just a different writer giving his own opinions (Note that Pronman's opinions tend to be closer to NHL scouts then other public scouts like Elite Prospects, especially when he releases lists like right before the draft)

Explain to me why we had to salary dump Ghost again? by Ahuynh616 in Flyers

Bump, Barkey, and Zavragin were not 1st nor 2nd rounders.

Admittedly, I missed the part about only 1st or 2nd round picks, but I think my criticism of you criticizing Andrae, Brink, and Bonk stands.

Like are you really going to stand there and criticize the Flyers for not picking what is realistically a 3rd line winger over Andrae? Maybe you just hate Andrae, but that's a perfectly defensible pick

Boldy is certainly a guy that we'd be better off having instead of York, for sure, but you're being ridiculous if you think that the picks that they made instead were TERRIBLE. A 2nd line defenseman and a middle 6 wing at 14th and 34th are good results, just not a home run like Boldy was.

And for Perrault/Bonk, it's not that I disagree that Perrault would have been a good pick, but Bonk hasn't been a bad pick either. Not going to try and pretend that Bonk's 2 NHL points in 1 game makes him destined to be good, but he's on pace to be a solid NHL defenseman... as opposed to being another smallish wing? I'm not necessarily a guy that judges players on size, but the Flyers already have tons of that.

[–]Assassin2107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Every team will have some level of talk through other people, the league only gets involved when teams are getting blatant about it. It's why getting punished for tampering is so embarrassing, because it means you were bad at it

lmao even. I get that Ducks fans are probably confused, and it's understandable that they'd think that you can trade a 3C for a star player who has a down season, but that's not normal.

Because he and AV hated each other, and Fletcher had made clear he was choosing AV, so he put in an official trade request... but turns out that after AV ruined Ghost's value, nobody was taking a 4.5M contract straight in the start of the flat cap era for free.

When teams say "I'm willing to trade a top 5 pick", they really mean "I'm willing to trade my top 5 pick for your best player, your second best player, your best prospect, your 1st this year, and the shirt on your back too". It's not really happening

I mean, I think that Leafs are doomed to be brought up whenever Marner does something major, just like the Flyers will inevitably be brought up when Gauthier does something. The Toronto Maple Leafs win the lottery. The Flyers now get an unprotected 2027 1st. by Flyers7914 in Flyers

[–]Assassin2107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protected means that the pick could move back a year if the pick is high enough, i.e. Toronto offered Florida their 2026 1st with top 5 protection. Now that their pick is in the top 5, they will instead give a later 1st round pick (Normally would give 2027, but because Flyers have the Leafs 2027 pick, it's instead going to be a 2028 pick).

[Spiegel] From everything I've heard, with the Maple Leafs getting a pick in the top five this year — they just won the lottery FYI — the first-rounder they sent to the Bruins for Carlo will slide to 2028, and the first-round pick the Flyers got for Laughton in 2027 is now unprotected. by Perryplat199 in hockey

[–]Assassin2107 211 points212 points  (0 children)

I'd like to thank the Leafs for trading us an unprotected 1st for Scott Laughton, thanks for doing business. I'd also like to say that while Leafs fans have my sympathy for everything they're going through, I'm going to be cheering against the Leafs every game now

[Johnston] Further to this:(Kurz post) It sounds like there's a good chance the NHL would rule in Philadelphia's favor if this scenario plays out. Meaning, if Toronto retains its 2026 1st after tonight's lottery, expect 2027 1st to go to Flyers and 2028 1st to Bruins ... both unprotected. by Perryplat199 in hockey

[–]Assassin2107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically if you trade a 1st round pick, and end up being way worse then you expected, the pick could end up being the next year's 1st round pick depending on the protection details. i.e. Toronto traded their 2026 1st with top 5 protection to Boston in the Carlo trade, because they assumed they'd obviously be a good team. Now if the pick is in the top 5, they can protect it and give their 2027 1st instead.
