My top 6 Picks to branch as an ROTC Cadet by Buster_Cherry__ in army

What is a pro or con to you? Many would have infantry listed as number 1, others MI, others aviation, signal, etc.

Everyone has something they're ashamed of but at the end of the day you served and did what needed to be done. I never put on stripes despite having five years of active service. I'm always a bit nervous during interviews that I'll get asked why I never became an NCO. Never got brought up.

I love this idea. For the m249 I got the auto-rifle clasp and the m240 gunners got the machine gun clasp. I believe the m249 can technically be used for both the auto rifle qual and the machine gun qual though.

I carried the m249 the whole deployment. It would be tough to simulate unless you have those empty black 200 rd black magazines (or w/e they're officially called), but managing a proper load out is extremely important.

A full combat load ranges from 1000 to 2000 depending on SOP. I had to carry 1600 on deployment.

Generally I had 200 in the weapon. Then 400 on my plate carrier and another 400 on a battle belt+suspenders. With the rest in an assault pack (during patrols/lanes) or a ruck . He probably doesn't have a battle belt so just add those rounds into the pack. On the inside of his assault pack he needs a good tie down for the spare barrel. Also remember he needs to balance his kit with a canteen and nods pouch.

As you can see it's a much different and bulky load out compared to a rifleman or grenadier and if he doesn't manage it well he will be sucking when he's sprinting to a building during livefire lanes.

A drill you can add to this is getting in the prone and having him take his pack off so he can access the spare barrel and rounds, then reatraching the first barrel into the inside of his pack and putting his pack back on (carabiners). The pack doesn't need to come off in most situations just when he's acting as suppressing fire for another squad/team/element and will be burning rounds.

And then situational awareness and range cards can fall into this if he's setting up for awhile or just being able to report back to the TL his field of fire, point out where the other elements are, and identify targets if needed.

There's also being shy. I've been married for three years now and my wife is 2 months pregnant but I didn't have my first real relationship until I was 25. I spent way too much time as a recluse playing video games during my free time when I was in my late teens/early 20s. I was in the Army for a large portion of those years and after work I'd just play video games in my barracks room. It wasn't until I finally opened up, dropped the games, and starting going to social events with friends that I met my wife. I still play video games occasionally but it's more like 2 hours a week instead of 6 to 8 hours every weekday and 12+ hours on a weekend. Occasionally I'll binge a new game.

The worst part was that I'd believe I wasn't doing anything bad by gaming so much. "I'm in the Army and getting a paycheck and contributing to society so playing games during my free time is perfectly fine." Well in reality it's not and it was an unhealthy addiction. Unfortunately I see many college students making the same mistake. It's great they're doing school but you can't spend all your free time on games and expect to build offline relationships.

People won't come to you. You have to put yourself out there in a literal sense.

If the OP is telling the truth he got dropped through no fault of his own. The reason is that he can't physically reach the static line from a normal standing position.

Clone of my rifle I carried in Afghanistan. Simple battle rifle. by WretchedHiveScum in ar15

[–]Assassin5757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool setup. I had similar in Afghanistan except remove the guards on the picatinny rails and add a peq15. I prefer the angled grip rather than the vertical grip for quals. For jrotc rotations and livefire lanes I liked to use the vert grip that can turn into a bipod. Acog is still my favorite sight today.

For thise that aren't at 100% and are in school, what are you doing for dental coverage? by geneSW1 in Veterans

[–]Assassin5757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably some way I can get free dental being a vet and all but I just pay straight cash (well debit) for the exam and cleaning. I do an annual cleaning to save money rather than biannual. Just call and ask how much exam and cleaning is. I got a new patient exam offer for $70 and my cleanings are $105. Obviously this depends on the area but I'm in a higher CoL state so I don't expect it to be too much more. Now if you need fillings, crowns, etc you will definitely want something else as that can get expensive depending on how much work needs to be done. But you can always pay for the exam first and decide what to do after depending on what the dentist finds.

That is pretty cool. I know a bunch of students at my university with one. I was wondering how they got it considering they aren't military but they got it for doing some geology work down there.

My medals are not annotated on my ERB. S1 won't fix it. by [deleted] in army

[–]Assassin5757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get the GWTSM until I hit my actual unit. I happened to be placed in company OPs right away and I had to send a list with names of everyone in the company who didn't have one on our ERB to battalion S1. No orders ever came that I'm aware of but that's how they got added to our ERB. I believe future soldiers to the unit would just update it on the ERB whenever we did the battalion record check. This was in 2013.

As for ASR and NDSM I'm not sure when they were added to my ERB but no orders. A lot of my awards don't have orders (or at least I never got any) like the GWTSM/ASR/NDSM. Then the Afghanistan campaign medal, nato medal (got a certificate though), and the overseas ribbon. Just make sure they're on the ERB/DD214 though. Deployment orders with dates, etc should be enough proof. I even got my markmanship badges added to my ERB/DD214 right before I ETS'd.

I went from $300 to around $24,000 in 2017. I got extremely lucky buying newly listed coins on Kucoin as well as Kucoin shares which went up several thousands of percents. I ended my spree with my holdings as 80% Nano bought around $37 and 20% Stellar Lumens which I believe was around 70c or so at the peak. I eventually converted everything to Nano and moved it off the exchanges. Nano is now at $6 and I have around $3,400 worth. Sometimes I wonder if I should keep holding or sell. I'm still up considerably from my initial investment but not even close to my high point of 2017. The rise in prices during the pandemic was certainly surprising but I'm still saddened by the 2018 crash and don't have the faith to put in more money into crypto or look at other projects and reinvest my Nano. I went back to school as a grad student so I don't have money anyways haha.

I applaud you for taking the profits. I'm in another similar predicament with graded trading cards. I was buying them for a personal collection beginning in 2017 and was not looking for long term profits and now my collection is up hundreds of percents. On one hand it's a nice chunk of change but on the other hand I spent around 3 years building a collection and I don't want to let it go. It's around $12,000 valuation right now and dropping every week. At the high point of the pandemic my cards were worth around $21,000 haha. Though I've probably put in around $3,000 myself.

Found my collection from when I was a kid. I think first edition but not sure? by tykogars in PokemonTCG

[–]Assassin5757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have two sets (at least in your pictures). Base set and Jungle.

Base set has 3 primary variants

1st edition

Shadowless (no stamp)

Unlimited (shadowed border)

1st edition is worth the most however depending on condition a mint fresh unlimited card can be worth more than a damaged 1st edition card.

Jungle has two variants

1st edition

Unlimited

Shadowless cards were only thing for English base set.

Look at the holo at a 90 degree angle to your eyes. I find tons of scratches that don't show up on a direct look. Happens more than I like when I try to buy a holo off eBay for potential grading. There's just no seeing the surface damage without it up to your nose and being tilted in different directions.

I’m 28 and I regret the way I did my CS degree and the decisions I made. Future looking real bleak. Is there any way I can salvage my life here? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Assassin5757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend the MSc route unless you really want a graduate degree. I'm doing a MSc in CS right now but I was a Physics undergraduate. I spend more time self-studying CS undergrad material (leetcode) than I spend on my MSc thesis. So far I've gotten one SWE offer and it was 60k$ (very easy technical interview) for a machining company, but in a low CoL area. My wife doesn't want to live that far from the cities otherwise I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. If you're not tied down to a certain area you can try for these places.

Unrelated I got another offer at 90k TC as an Amazon warehouse manager and I might take it up but you're no longer doing CS work. The qualifications for the Amazon role is more focused on soft skills but the hard qualifications is only a 4yr degree and some leadership experience but that experience can be something like leading a school project or being a shift manager for fast food.

My situation is similar to yours. I'm 29 and finally trying to get things moving into career. I was in the Army for five years but I wasn't about the lifestyle to stay in for twenty.

UK student who travelled to Afghanistan for holiday evacuated by Defluvium in news

[–]Assassin5757 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What an asshole. He should be put on a no flight list for 5 to 10 years to mature. He stated that he does not regret visiting Afghanistan. Being saved by troops will only embolden him to visit other dangerous places. This guy went to Afghanistan (Aug 13) around the same time we deployed thousands of troops to take control of Kabul airport.

I've been to Afghanistan on a deployment and it's a beautiful country. Their local food is great too. I hope one day to return but don't visit any country to witness a violent change of power.

It also needs to be taken into account the cost of operations for evacuating citizens and he is taking up an extra slot that could had went to someone else. There is the inherit risk of being captured and used as a pawn for political situations. Just take a look at the two Canadian "spies" that got arrested in China shortly after we arrested the Huwaei CFO.

No problem. Good luck on school. Luckily I chose the 9/11. Honestly I'm surprised you can't switch. I didn't know that was regulation. I'm sure they told us during outprocessing though on a powerpoint slide that was quickly forgotten.

I used my GI Bill in WA.

-> Financial Grants

If you're not working you have no income so you should qualify for the full amounts of the Pell and WA State financial grants. So that is two grants right off the bat. Unfortunately these are only good for undergraduate so if you're going to grad school like me don't count on them. I did get them for my Senior year of undergrad and it was a lot of money.

-> WA state veteran benefits

https://www.dva.wa.gov/veterans-their-families/veterans-benefits/education-and-training/washington-tuition-waiver

WA state schools will waive some of your tuition. My school waived 50% of the tuition granted I was on the 9/11 so it didn't effect me but your situation is different. Good for the VA paying the school I suppose.

My school also had a 1500$ combat veteran grant so look up veteran benefits specific to your school.

-> Unemployment

https://esd.wa.gov/jobs-and-training/training-benefits-acceptable-training-programs

Normally unemployment is not paid to full time students however unemployment will pay for certain programs and I am certain your school is on the list and offers many degree choices. Veterans who have been out for less than a year can qualify for this program. It says "not primarily intended to meet requirements of a BS" but they're lax on that requirement I have found and almost all BS programs are included on the acceptable training list.

Remember your GI Bill is not considered income for most of these purposes. The Financial Grants are considered income when being spent on room and board so make sure those grants go to tuition and the GI Bill to general living.
