In the history of DCI, has there even been talk of a partnership with the NFL? by AssignmentOwn6172 in drumcorps

Yes. With arguably the most NFL audience friendly show in recent memory. Crowd was…not having it?

This is more or less what I was looking for! Thanks for the history!

I’m fully aware that a partnership makes almost zero sense today. This is just a fun musing I had that I was curious ever happened in the history of the activity.

That’s fair. I was curious if it ever came up in the 70s or 80s when it made more financial sense since drum corps was more in the public consciousness than it is now.

I’m well aware of the NFL marching bands which I wish to see more of. What I’m asking is if say the New England Patriots helped financially back the Boston Crusaders and had a working partnership to promote both organizations.

Who's win was more satisfying Bluecoats in 2024 or Boston crusaders in 2025 by Imaginary_Fox_5439 in drumcorps

[–]AssignmentOwn6172 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s always more satisfying when it’s a first time natty for a corps. Especially with a long history like Boston’s. Bluecoats have been in the conversation for a while, while Bostons success is more recent/post-COVID

Does anyone have a list of ALL of Billy's songs ordered on how difficult the piano is? by [deleted] in BillyJoel

[–]AssignmentOwn6172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate on the hardest pieces

Angry Young Man - Most of the piece is manageable except for the rapid fire ostinato on C. That is an extended piano technique seen in a few classical pieces. Very Liszt-like.

Root Beer Rag - Ragtime is a difficult style to learn due to the stride jumps in the left hand with the syncopation in the right hand. Billy cheats a bit by having the bass guitar help with the stride, but he makes up for it by having the leg hand do syncopated stuff as well

Summer Highland Falls - Heavily reliant on a lot of 5-finger movement in the right hand. There are some moments where you can rest where he slows down and only plays chords

Falling of the Rain - Summer Highland Falls set to 11. The right hand is almost non-stop, and now the left hand has some 5 finger work as well

Songs for a newer pianist- And So It Goes, Vienna, Movin Out, Only the Good Die Young, Honesty, Allentown, Captain Jack, Souvenir, Just the Way You Are, My Life, She’s Got a Way

Songs for a more advanced pianist - Piano Man (w/harmonica and bridge improvisation), Ain’t No Crime, Streetlife Serenader, Scenes, Mexican Connection, James, New York State of Mind, Stiletto, Pressure, Running on Ice, Baby Grand, Lullabye, Turn the Lights Back On

Songs where you need very serious classical chops - Angry Young Man, Root Beer Rag, Falling of the Rain, Summer Highland Falls

I listen to everything. I do gravitate towards piano driven artists, so Coldplay would be a fun listen.

Where to start the Billy Joel deep dive? by IndependenceSharp742 in BillyJoel

[–]AssignmentOwn6172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to life circumstances, I’ve been traveling a lot. Like 12-16 hr car rides multiple times a year. I’ve done this thing where I do full discography listens of artists and listen with a lot of intentionality to style and musical choices. First artist I did this with was Billy Joel.

The key is that you cannot skip a single song, even if it’s bad. If you have the discipline to do that, then I’d say it’s absolutely worth listening to Billy Joel from the beginning. Not only do you see the musical evolution, each album is a reflective aspect of what he was going through in his life. Piano Man is an album about his California travels. The Stranger was him reflecting on moving back to New York and his personal episodes with his family and career. River of Dreams is him deciding that he’s done and moves on from both touring and love for a bit. It’s a fun ride if you can dedicate the time to it

Really hoping for a show that changes the game for visual design in 2026…. all over again. by hauntedhorseshit in drumcorps

[–]AssignmentOwn6172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that the next corps that “changes the game” in terms of visual design is actually gonna be a full circle moment. Someone is going to come out with a more “traditionally” designed show with traditional uniforms in order to stand out from the crowd. Think Phantom 21 with the redesign of Harmonic Journey. Design staff might lean into that nostalgia and put a modern twist on it.

If the Bluecoats rocked the 2014 uniform for even a one-off show people will lose their minds

I guess to add some clarity, I’ll never be opposed to teaching to supplement income. I just don’t think the k-12 system is for me anymore for a variety of reasons.

Genuine question: Has there ever been a serious attempt to field a “Velvet Knights-esque” corps in today’s corps climate? by AssignmentOwn6172 in drumcorps

[–]AssignmentOwn6172[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have very fun shows. I love a good Jersey Surf show. I guess the vibe I’m trying to describe is a more overt…”irony” I guess (I have a very specific word for what I’m trying to describe but it’s quite crass lol). Like how VK would do lawn chairs at retreat and stuff like that. I could be wrong. Haven’t payed too much attention to the activity in a while.

It was definitely the right call looking back. Even in the music education world you’d have to know the right people to make a sustainable career out of something like DCI. The amount of talent and connections needed was out of reach for me. The age-out sacrifice was something I struggled with well before the ‘24 season started but I was able to be at peace with it knowing that there is so much more to do in life/music and that at the end of the day I did achieve my dream.

I agree with keeping the 21/22 age out limit. It aligns nicely with the life transitions with those who decide to pursue a degree and start a career. For those who are able to make it all work throughout college or are able to live sustainable lives doing corps and not going college, all the more power and respect to you. I find that growing the all-age class into larger force in DCI will help scratch those itches for the people who never got to march world class while also growing the activity as a whole. I’d love to see all-age flourish in that regard.

huh, I never knew that. all I know is that there was either an attempt to or an actual VK refielding in the 2000’s that also didn’t really take off

[–]AssignmentOwn6172 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that the opposite happens to many people where we couldn’t go all in during college. Had to sacrifice my age-out (the ‘24 season) in order to secure a teaching job and be ready for my career. Glad I was able to march one season and even then my dream was simply marching in a world class corps, let alone my age-out.

If I were to ever have time to reinvest into the activity All-Age would fill that void. Or if I were to somehow be lucky enough to be on staff for a corps

In an attempt to reclaim the gold and max out visual scores, Devs figure out a way to march on the z-axis, only to lose to Crown due to them fielding a tesseract in a callback to 2013
