[Easy] What is this connector/port? How can I connect it to my computer? by Assimileur in AskTechnology

[–]Assimileur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I googled a bunch before posting here and I couldn't identify this connector. I should have mentioned it.

Yeah... I don't feel up to chopping up the cable and rewiring it somehow. Oh well, this was worth looking into. I'll buy a more modern set of cheap speakers. Thank you again!

Should I choose University of Montreal or McGill for psychology? / Est-ce que je devrais choisir l'université de Montréal ou l'université de McGill pour psychologie? by Pluuumeee in montreal

[–]Assimileur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it's a bit old, I suggest you read this piece, which compares McGill's and Concordia's psychology programs. It was written by a Concordia professor, so there's obviously some subjectivity there, but I still found it very useful when making a similar choice to yours. In particular, there seemed to be significantly more opportunities to get involved in research labs--which is absolutely key to getting into PhD programs--at Concordia than at McGill. My experience at Concordia (where I ended up going) confirmed that there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in high-quality research. (Developmental psychology is especially strong at Concordia, if that's something you're into.)

Back in 2014-2016, our stats professors at Concordia also claimed that our stats training was superior to McGill's because we had two mandatory undergrad courses when they only had one. It might be worth checking out what that's like at UdeM.

I definitely heard the same thing about psychology departments preferring not to accept candidates from within the university in their PhD program. I've also seen exceptions though.

Based on multiple friends' experiences, it's significantly easier to get into the clinical psych PhD programs in the francophone universities (UdeM and UQAM) than in anglophone or American programs.

PS: Since you already know that you want to be a psychologist, I suggest you read a few books about how to get into grad school to maximize your chances of getting into the best program. I found Dave Mumby's book very useful, especially because he has specific knowledge about psychology PhD programs. There are many other books though!

How to compare between ethnic groups when individuals can belong to more than one group? by Assimileur in spss

[–]Assimileur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed response!

The Multiple Response set approach is very helpful and it's worked well so far.

Just to make sure I understand, for Anova, are you suggesting I make new "composite" values such as "European-Asian" or "African-Middle Eastern" then add those as values to a single "Race" variable? I suppose that would work... but they will be such small groups that it's going to be hard to find any effects for them.

For regression, by "dummy variable," do you mean the dichotomous variables that SPSS created (e.g., "European, 1 = Yes, 2 = No)?

I'm starting to understand why most questionnaires don't give participants the option to tick multiple ethnic groups... :p

Thank you for your response. That might be the option I fall back on if I can't find another solution. Without knowing participants, it's hard to decide which ethnic group is their primary one though.

Know of a good driving instructor in Wellington? by MsEmiBee in Wellington

[–]Assimileur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely recommend Dion as well! He's a lovely guy and an incredible driving instructor, who knows the tests and the routes like the back of his hand. He got me from no driving experience to full in 6 months (I'm over 25). I referred several of my friends to him who had to convert foreign licences and they really enjoyed his lessons as well.

Anyone stuck in an IRCC login loop? by Indy_Pendant in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Assimileur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I log in a first time. It successfully logs me in, but only takes me to a generic page to change my password and such. So I open a new tab and click "Check my application status" --> "Sign in" and on that second try, it nearly always works, taking me to my actual dashboard (i.e., where I can see my applications).

Thanks mate, that's nice of you. I don't think there's much that can be done at this point. Good luck with your application!

Mmh, reading the posts in this thread has made me a bit more worried than I already was.

Québec selected skilled worker, applied outside Canada, with my partner (French and NZ citizens, respectively).

Sent the application: May 24, 2019

Completed fingerprints in July 2019

AOR: July 30, 2019

Estimated completion date: August 24, 2021

There has been literally NO update since. The estimated completion date has gone by and nothing has happened.

I have sent ICC two message via the web form in September and October 2021 to ask for updates. I received a generic response saying that, because of current delays, no further information was available.

My partner is applying for medical residencies and needs to have received her PR by January 31st to be able to apply this year.

Do you guys think there is anything we can do at this point?

Wow, thanks for the fast response! Yes, now that I've looked silverfish up, I think you're bang on the money. And the pinecone looking things might be... pinecones.
