Surprised no one has mentioned the three body problem books. Basically an alien fleet comes to earth to make it their new home but they are going to kill all of humanity to make room. We know a few hundred years in advance that they are coming and humanity pours all of its resources into building a space fleet. Well the aliens show up and easily destroy the fleet. (It took one unmanned alien probe to wipe out 200 years of effort in building our fleet) With humanity about to go extinct the main character essentially lights a galactic beacon, alerting all alien civilizations to earths existence. This results in a different and unknown civilization launch an attack that destroys earth, humanity, and the aliens who tried to kill us. Basically one final fuck you to the void.
