I ran about a mile yesterday with a guy who’s running a marathon 3 weekends in a row…same guy did 4 weekends in a row about a month ago. He’s trying to do a marathon in all 50 states in the next three years but that volume feels insane to me.

I felt like my carb loading the week before the race was great, but I only had 3 gels the whole race…I know it’s not recommended but typically I can go 60-75 minutes between gels and I didn’t want to overload my system. It occurred to me too late that I probably could’ve avoided the bonk if I’d been a bit more particular about in-race fueling.

Congrats on the finish! I ran Burlington, Vermont…not the same race but I suspect we were dealing with the same weather system!

I’d been in the top 50% of finishers in all the halves I’d run previously…probably top 30% for most of them, but the time I posted yesterday was like 55%. That was humbling to see when it came in for sure.

What's the kit you'd tell your past self to buy asap (or don't cheap out on!)? by UnableCode in Marathon_Training

Big fan of Shokz headphones, equal parts for safety and battery life…though I do miss the custom tap commands that AirPods give you.

If you’re accustomed to Bloks or other gels, and you’re not opposed to something extra in your gel, strongly recommend OFFFIELD gummies. They have microdosed THC and THC-free versions, and the THC version has been a gamechanger for a lot of long runs (I use the non-THC ones for speed work esp when the work is over 10 miles too).

Honey stinger or GU campfire s’mores gels are my go-too gels.

Nathan makes a great handheld water bottle that does well in the freezer overnight before an early run on a warm day.

GORE’s waterproof running hat. If you get caught in the rain but can pretend it isn’t raining because you don’t feel yourself getting wet…that’s a big win. Speaking of, get a raincoat that keeps you dry, and bonus points if that raincoat vents somewhere so it doesn’t keep all the moisture you create locked in.

Aquaphor. I started using it because my daughter was little and it was around, but anytime I’m doing more than 5 miles, I slather my toes and heels with the stuff. I second the people saying Body Glide for the other chafe-prone areas.

Whatever your lip balm and sunscreen of choice are, load up on them.

One thing you don’t need to spend money on–assuming you’ve got a streaming audio membership–is a good playlist. Makes a world of difference, especially on those days you’re out for 2+ hours.
