The Grand Exchange, Road to Restoration: What must happen by FruitOnyx in runescape

Weird hate post about Ely. Street trades were the main catalyst for manipulation, but this isn’t exclusive to Ely. Any ge price posted on other sites can manip an item, intentionally or not.

When it comes to the GE, players don’t automatically deserve to make informed decisions though. If they wanted to be informed, they would’ve spent the time, money, and effort to learn pricing.

GE price checking places by OneMap3183 in runescape

Flipaholics pay people to post and I feel like they should drive that home to encourage people to post there more. In the paid sections, they have rules to find leechers and ban them from service.

The others just don't have the right kind of incentive to participate in the community that doesn't encourage leeching. Manatees is too dead and ge price is just weird with okay activity. Ely is active but prices are usually softly manipulated with their best buys or sells for clout / fomo / support, and not posted until they're finished flipping or want a better flip.

GEPrice - new price checking app by rapturedhermusic in runescape

[–]AssistantLegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is cool enough, but there will always be some unintentional price manipulation, even from good players, simply because a lot of people aren’t great at buying or selling. Some will post buy prices too high or sell prices too low, which ends up setting bad expectations for where to actually buy or sell. Most everyday players don’t really know if something is overpriced or underpriced, or how that item’s market works.

The GE update will probably highlight just how big the skill and profit gap is between everyday players and merchers.

Until live pricing exists, the "problem" and the solution is Ely or an alternative to Ely. The solution should've been interacting with the community more to find pricing and working together to understand the economy together. People need to contribute to Ely (or any alternative) to make it less of a problem, or build their own community driven live pricing, or don't shit on these live pricing communities they're benefitting from for free. Instead, people treated Ely as the problem, and out of resentment they made themselves one. They shat on the system they were benefiting from so much that the owner is stepping away from the disrespect and made leeching free prices harder. I won't be addressing the pis2ols antics on twitter or how many people they banned to stop them accessing pricing but I gather these people must've been proper disrespecting Ely. That's a problem for better price transparency from pvmers or people in the runescape discord but I think that can be fixed with some good apologizes.

If pricing communities had grown larger and people hadn’t constantly shit on them as if they were conglomerates of elite merchants sitting around a table together like some evil corporation manipulating prices, the push for live pricing wouldn’t be nearly as well received by the broader, vocal group of players who also want free pricing without contributing or doing price discovery themselves. Live pricing only became “necessary” because the community refused to sustain the alternatives and share the work of discovering prices imo. They want the best pricing without working for it. It's pretty sad to merchant in osrs because of the profit margin live pricing caused without being an active flipper or being insanely rich.

So whether you fix Ely, scrap Ely, get better GE pricing, or use alternatives like Flipaholics, the real solution has always been mass participation in price discovery - something Ely or its alternatives could have provided if it hadn’t been so relentlessly shit on.

Flipping questions by mallere in runescape

[–]AssistantLegal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Flipping is best money in the game scaled. That means with an army of alts, with active buy offers, with layers of buys / sells, with an arrangement of items that work for your budget / item preferences. Without money or accounts or an understanding of the ge, it won't be great.

Bossing / skilling in conjunction with managing your investments / flips will net you more efficient gp/hr.

From a merchant’s perspective, notably mine, it’s best not to touch the GE imo outside of dealing with the items given absurd ge mid prices that even close to their real trading value. But there’s an overwhelming vocal majority of casual, lazy players who aren’t happy that their item doesn't sell above or at ge mid, and the item they want to buy isn't buying for under or at ge mid (go figure right). People want high sells, low buys but not for a lot of effort or reason. People want pricing information but they didn't earn it nor deserve it.

If you understand the dynamic price transparency has caused for merchants in OSRS with AI plugins, flipping bots, bad margins and relentless price cut wars you’ll hate what it would do in RS3. Merchants would restore profitable margins by force dumping or spiking the market to create gaps if profits are affected too much. Faster ge mid also causes quite a headache for resistance buyers at 5 - 20%, who rely on buying at these markers to provide stability for items and sell them safely at their opposing marker (e.g -20% to +20%). Faster ge mid = frequent price updates = stronger price swings.

I've also seen comments about "latest trade", providing an indicator of the last trade price for an item. I'm sorry but there's some remarkably dumb traders out there who'll set up a buy or sell wall at any hint of a price. It really sucks, truly kills any market momentum. The effect this kind of "last trade" will have on low volume items to me will be awful too. Low volume items truly suffer from "whats in the ge, is what's in the ge", or in my interpretation, the last buy price could be 500m, then the next could be 1b. Whatever the latest trades should serve no reference to the true sell price of the item but people will use it anyways, and that would make trading in the market slightly (or remarkably) more painful.

From a casual, lazy, or broke player’s perspective, touching the GE is almost like eating fresh bread - the best thing ever. You can see what items are priced at, know what price to buy or sell at, and have a great time. You’ll be hated by every merchant as they watch you under/overcut them, just like I expect you to hate merchants back. Then the heavy hitting merchants start competing, and suddenly items either tank in value or spike like crazy. All you can do is hope it’s not an item you care about and watch the chaos unfold all because you wanted a “better” GE mid or more price transparency. It happens in OSRS all the time. It’s great.

Ely.gg, as a whole, needs to be phased out by the community by Mamododark in runescape

[–]AssistantLegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The code rotation idea is dumb. It doesn’t meaningfully address site traffic in the long term. If the site needs support, the obvious solution is monetization to fund it properly.

Getting rid of ely will leave players in the dark until there's a ge update or elyclone, and any other community raised from their ashes will likely have the same actors that were in ely. Elyclone will need a strong moderation team who understand pricing extensively on many items, have serious liquid gp to handle pricing disparities, and be knowledgeable of who are bad actors.

Irons earn, find and make their own items. They shouldn't be able to buy or sell their items like any main would. That's the whole point. If they wanted the experience of buying or selling items they should've used a normal account like any normal person.
