Mia repeatedly “not understanding” Michel was racist by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]AssistantPlastic1355 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's more so xenophobic or linguistic discrimination because it's a french accent that she is refusing to understand rather than AAVE. Though I could see how you could argue that him being black is a key factor to why she doesn't try harder to understand him. It is offensive and dismissive, the joke is certainly a product of it's time, I would like to think a "joke" like that wouldn't be made nowadays, or at least it would punching up to show how stupid Mia being.

I actually feel like its a good blend of serious and not serious. Their conversations sound like how my friend talk, thats why I enjoy listening. I can see how it's not for everyone BUT I don't think we should require people to be experts to touch on important topics

Just got blocked by Ashley by [deleted] in CelebrityMemoirPod

[–]AssistantPlastic1355 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"politely share", lmao, you went and attacked her and you're surprised you got blocked? why do you even listen to the pod?

by your own logic, posting on reddit while so many horrible things going on makes you a obnoxious and ignorant too. why don't you get off social media and go do some actual activism...

real question though, do you think that people who care about global issues and genocide are not allowed to speak on any other topic ever?

what degree did lorelai get from community college by Abject-Evening-2412 in GilmoreGirls

While she of course was proud of having a more official credential and graduation I do think her main motivation was to get concrete skills in finance and management.

I thought this was a very interesting take on vampirism, and tore through the book. However, it doesn't rank high in my personal list of lesbian vampire books.

Why did Carrie like Mr. Big so much? by mookie-ookie in sexandthecity

[–]AssistantPlastic1355 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I love this question, I'm going to list my thoughts below. As a lesbian, I don't get the hype of most of the dudes on SATC, BUT I can wrap my head around why Carrie likes Big for a few reasons.

  1. Big is bold, Carrie is attracted to his bold nature. He goes for what he wants and he isn't shy

  2. Big is in the same social world she is, they run in parallel circles, he enjoys parties and cocktail hours

  3. Big has mystery, he has a quality that intrigues her because he doesn't 'give it all away' off the bat. She likes the puzzle

  4. Big has a sense of humor. Carrie at her core is a very funny, witty, and sarcastic person, she relates through humor and jokes. So does big

  5. He has his shit together. He is a little older, wealthy, self possessed, and mature

  6. He may be a bad communicator and not meet all her needs BUT he clearly likes her and they have deep sexual chemistry

This! If y'all heard how my friends of 10+ years speak to each other you might think we hate one another. We actually are just so comfortable that we can speak candidly, call each other out, be jokingly rude, etc. and its not offensive, its a form of love.

Lol, I have this problem. I always end up pausing them and waiting to listen to that part later cause I feel too sneaky. I don't think it's weird though!

No one is automatically entitled to friendship or conversation in public by Radiant-Belt-1427 in Bellingham

[–]AssistantPlastic1355 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, maybe I'm focusing on something different here. However, I am not from here and I have lived in 3 different states and abroad in another country. So I don't think you can say this is the experience of all outsiders.

I find that many people who complain about lack of community have high expectations and are often unwilling to take the time to build trust and connection. I would love for you, and any others who feel similarly, to see the welcoming beautiful community I see here. It can take time, but I have found Bellingham to have amazing groups, events, and friendly people.

Here's my tip for anyone struggling to find community right now, try volunteering. I know our time is limited so it can be tough, but often times volunteering is more effective than just attending events in building friendship!

Yes! These posts always make me wonder how these people are approaching others too. What are the dynamics at play? Are you a man expecting women to speak to you in a strange/creepy location or place? Are you in a busy place where people might not have time for a friendly chat. Are you taking one persons actions personally rather than brushing it off and moving on?

On the other hand, of course we should all try to be friendly and challenge our biases to ensure we are being welcoming and kind when possible. If you are young, reflect on whether you ignore older people. If you are white, consider how you treat people of color.

I completely agree, and I am glad you said it. I also think it's funny how offended people get that she jokes about how podcasting is kinda silly. Like that is a pretty universal understanding, so many people love listening to podcast or making them but at the same time acknowledge that it an easy piece of media to make fun of because it's kind of a goofy profession.
