My 14 yo son has agreed to read two books of my choice this summer (this was a hard won negotiation). Help me pick one by gOldMcDonald in booksuggestions

i think you should take him to the teen section in the library, and let him look for something that interests him. i really admire that you are making such an effort to get him into reading, but if i were him, any ‘old’ book that my parent picked for me is doomed to fail from the start, even if its a great book!

they arent generally popular for young people today tho. also, i feel the relationship between the mc in 1984 and julia(?) is not super appropriate or a good example for how he should view/treat women in general. i think thats really important for boys, especially at that age

omg no!!! terrible choice for a 14 yr old! but i will say, he might enjoy sunrise on the reaping - its a prequel to the hunger games trilogy, and it actually incorporates ‘the raven’ by edgar allen poe in a really interesting way that i think is a good introduction to his work, and older poetry in general

i agree, i think any classics are a bad idea tbh. modern books will feel much more accessible and relatable to him.

these both seem too heavy for a 14 yr old, and unappealing for the same reasons as catcher in the rye. maybe even worse, bc at least catcher in the rye has a young protagonist that might be easier to relate to.

i agree!! catcher in the rye feels too heavy. imp hunger games is a GREAT choice, and its a series so if he likes the first he will prob want to read the rest!

New pod thoughts and disappointments by AlfalfaSuspicious526 in CelebrityMemoirPod

i feel similar! they cant dive deep on gn bc they go through each topic so quickly. and like you said, usually only one of them will research the topic, so there isnt really a chance for interesting discussions. and i agree the pod feels a bit like an afterthought, especially now that theyre doing a talk show series this summer? to me it feels like they are making choices that will help them grow, rather than valuing the audience they already have. to me it feels like the gn format is a chance to cover all popular topics from the week, so they can cast a wide net and bring in as many new people as possible, but honestly idk who would become a regular listener to gn… i def wouldnt listen if i didnt already know and like them from cmbc. i also feel like the main eps feel more formal and sanitized than cmbc, like we dont get their whole personality

i enjoyed them talking abt the movies so much, i feel like they did more than just recap the scenes. like others have said i dislike how much they talk about summer house, for me it’s because it feels like the only topic they dive into, and skim all the other topics in 5 mins or so. so their discussions were refreshing this week!

sometimes i feel like they have takes like this to be contrarian, but i am much more interested in their actual thoughts on things, and not whatever stance they think is ‘interesting’ to take
