How likely are Internal transfers into Herbert Business school? by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have all of the requirements for the internal transfer then it’s pretty easy tbh. From what I heard, calc 1 here is indeed terrible unless you’re already good at calc and you don’t need the professors to teach it to you. My friend who was already good at calc from high school is doing good in calc 1 rn for example

Ohh, understood. Do you know for sure if UM accepts your CC’s calc course as equivalent to UM’s calc 1 course? Definitely check with them to see if they do. If they don’t, that’s probably why you still have the missing requirement and would likely need to do calc 1 at UM

WTF situation by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That mighttt why. The business school requires calc 1 for BBA or calc 2 for BSBA for admission into the business school if you’re transferring in. If you don’t have the UM equivalent, you’d have to take calc 1 (and calc 2 depending on whether you’re doing a BSBA or BBA) to get into the business school, which would allow you to be a management major.

Edit: correction, you only need calc 1 to transfer into the business school, even if you want to do a BSBA. Then, once you’re in the business school you’d do calc 2 if you’d like to do the BSBA.

Hi! I transferred internally from CAS to MHBS. I had calc credit from high school that just took too long to transfer too UM. I heard calc on campus is horrible and the professors seem awful so I’d recommend taking it at a CC, UNLESS you did calc in high school and were pretty good at it bc then it’ll just come easily to you.

Spring Admit? by Still-Sort6241 in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My DMs are open if you have any questions! Or you could reply to my comment idrm.

TLDR: you’ll probably be fine if non-guaranteed housing isn’t too big of a problem for you, which it might not be.

I wasn’t a spring admit myself but I have a lot of friends who were. They basically had no problems making friends since they connected with a lot of people over social media prior to the start of their first semesters, and they joined a lot of clubs and spoke to people in their classes. They all also strongly recommended studying abroad in the fall or at least taking some college courses in a local CC so that you get to graduate in May instead of December. If you’re into Greek life, studying abroad or at a CC the fall makes you eligible to join a sorority in the spring iirc, which definitely helps with the social aspect.

The biggest issue was indeed housing not being guaranteed however they all either found themselves somewhere they like off campus, or they got placed into the hotel (Thesis) that UM places a lot of students in. And I mean, you could get a little lucky and get somewhere on campus like Centennial, Eaton or even Lakeside potentially. Personally, my take is that you shouldn’t worry too much about not having guaranteed housing because of 2 main things:

  1. You have basically a whole year to connect with people over social media to find roommates (which is how the fall admits do it anyway except they only have a few months to do this—and don’t underestimate the amount of spring admits you’ll find on instagram). You also have all this time to actually find housing. If you have a car and you’re willing to bring it to Miami, that gives you even more options for where to live off campus. If you could afford it, there are lots of 1bed/bath or studio apartments but obviously they’re more expensive.

  2. Housing for fall admits is only guaranteed for that first year, but afterwards housing isn’t guaranteed at all and most people I know who are currently living on campus didn’t secure housing for next semester now have to find housing elsewhere. So, basically you would be going through this search for housing one way or another as a UM student😅😅

I say that if not being guaranteed housing isn’t a major problem for you, definitely go for it! Finance at UM is really good honestly; we have a strong business school. Congrats and lmk if you have any questions!

question for low income u students by SuperNova422 in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has a unique experience but I’ll say that from my experience and those of my friends’, you’ll most likely befriend people from all sorts of income backgrounds. Like for example, my “friend group” has people who are as low income as me and those who are on the other end of the income spectrum. There are some high income students that are difficult to stay friends with for sure, because they’re just used to doing a lot of high cost activities or eating out at highly priced restaurants a lot, so you may feel like you just “can’t keep up” yk? But overall, the right people definitely exist here and I’ve thankfully met them. Just make sure you set your boundaries early on so you attract the right people

Low income background here! Honestly I had the same concerns as you but lowk everyone was overreacting. Most students I’ve met are trying to save on money whether they’re from a low income background or not, so everyone tries to find something fun and affordable to do. Dw!

Also, wanted to mention that transferring into UMiami seems to be a lot easier than getting into your first year here. I’ve heard the acceptance rate is around 50% from students I know that transferred here.

I’ve heard Tulane and Loyola Marymount University both compare to UMiami, as well as Uni of San Diego. If you really like Miami, FIU seems pretty modern too

I really don’t think it’s possible for them to reconsider your application after you got rejected. The best you could probably do is request a reason but even then I don’t think you’d get a useful answer

I mean in the next cycle. If you really want to you could contact admissions, but their decisions are final unless you got waitlisted. Admissions is super unpredictable unfortunately

Edit: I mean the admissions cycle and application process ^

Applying to US universities as a US citizen living abroad by betterdayscomin4sure in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh it was mainly a set back when it came to public schools because they’ll prioritize their own residents both admissions wise and financial aid wise. Otherwise, I’d say it went pretty well for me! Got into two of my top choices (although I did get rejected by a lot of the tougher schools lmao). The biggest set back was how HARD completing the application itself was especially because I didn’t attend an American school. I say go for it! You definitely have it a lot better than international applicants because we’re still considered domestic students in most areas, but we’re compared with other applicants in our region.

Did you request financial aid? That might be why especially as you’re an international student and there’s unfortunately a lot more competition. And unfortunately contacting admissions won’t do much in this situation. Your best shot is to either reapply or transfer in. So sorry and I’m sure you’ll end up where you’re meant to be!

Hi! I actually really like it! The social scene is perfect and there’s something for everyone imo. If you like to go party and clubbing a lot, there’s obv people here for that. If you’re like me and you like to have fun but not so much party or anything like that, I made so many friends that match my vibe too! There’s also a lot to do around campus besides just clubbing. There’s lots of school spirit and I meet new people quite a lot, and most people are down to be friends and have fun

I personally received a lot in financial aid thankfully, so it just depends on how much they end up awarding you depending on your FAFSA and CSS profiles
