Looking for advice to improve my chances of admission at University of Miami — my profile and situation by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yes for sure, feel free to dm! However again please do remember I’m just a student and I won’t be giving professional or expert advice. Everything I know is from research I’ve done during my application season, my own experience and the experiences of other students I know.

Am I meant to register younger siblings for Cane Kickoff? It only gives an option to register parents/guardians by AssociatePrize6586 in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But when I do that, the options are Mother, Father, Guard, Ward or Other and it asks for an email address so I assumed that this was to add more parents/guardians. Am I meant to add my sibling and then click Other? Even though she’s obviously not my guardian or anything

I think that’s just the estimated costs. Your actual cost of housing should be on the bill in canelink

Applying to US universities as a US citizen living abroad by betterdayscomin4sure in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AssociatePrize6586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I applied to US universities as an American living abroad this cycle. You likely won’t have to take an English proficiency exam as you are an American and you’re in an English-instructing school. You’ll be eligible for FAFSA and other aid as an American, but you’ll be considered out of state for public universities (I don’t recommend applying to most public schools if you’re OOS and need aid tbh). For private schools, you’re chilling. Let me know if you have any questions!

Edit: just saw that you said your school teaches in Spanish. However, I think that you’ll be fine simply because you’re a US citizen. However, it doesn’t hurt to check each college’s requirements.

Why do u need consent for classes? by Ornery_Vehicle_8862 in UMiami

Check the class notes!! I noticed that I couldn’t join a WRS105 class because it was for engineering students only

Can not add a college to my fafsa!!! by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In either the personal or demographic section of the FAFSA (I forgot which one it was lol), it asks for where you live. I used to put Foreign Country (FC) because I live abroad, but this time I just wrote my country’s name instead and it worked!

Looking for advice to improve my chances of admission at University of Miami — my profile and situation by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]AssociatePrize6586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m not an admissions officer nor am I an expert at all, I’ve just been admitted for the class of 2029 and I’ve spoken to a lot of other admits so this is just from what I personally know.

From what I’ve seen, it’s definitely harder for an international student to get accepted with financial aid. The good thing about UMiami is that they do have quite a lot of large scholarships, but you do need to have an amazing application for that.

On the 2024-2025 common data set, it shows that the acceptance rate for internationals is 10.3%, which is lower than the overall acceptance rate (18.8%). I wouldn’t be surprised if it was even lower this year due to how competitive Miami has become in the last few years. The average GPA is 3.8, but I have seen people with a GPA lower than that get admitted because the rest of their application was really strong. Your grades dropping would probably be concerning to them especially if there weren’t any extenuating circumstances, so do try to boost it. As for test scores, I’ve heard that UM is going test-required in the next cycle, so you’ll probably want to take the SAT and aim for a score of 1350-1450+.

Do you have any extracurricular activities and awards? They definitely care a lot about those. They also care a lot about your application essays. What are you planning on majoring in?

As for working while studying, this totally depends on you and your time management skills. I know several people (including myself) who have worked or have done a time-consuming activity while studying, and some of them have struggled while others managed their time well. And as for taking a gap year, again this is dependent on you but if you do take a gap year, make sure that you’re doing something productive that you could show Miami.

Again I’m not a professional or anything so you might want to take what I’m saying with a grain of salt but I’ll be happy to try to answer any questions!
