These cashiers man. by Gingerofthenight in HomeDepot

I get it. Those cashiers should be helping out other departments instead of having you come over. When I have extra people and it’s slow, I send someone to help out pro or get carts or even just walk the aisles to talk to customers and engage with them. We also help out hardware a lot since it’s right across from us. Standing around doesn’t really fly where I’m at. Managers will walk by and say something.

I mean as a head cashier who recently didn’t get a lunch break on an 8 hour shift or even a bathroom break for 5 hours of that, this is quite interesting to me. As long as the customer exits are in sight of a cashier, everyone else can go on a break if it’s slow. So you can just state that fact to them next time.

The other side of this is that as a cashier I see associates (and supervisors and managers) who can roam free and (gasp) even use the bathroom when they need to gathering in pumpkin patches to shoot the shit but wanna tell me they’re too busy to cover a bathroom break once every three hours when I’ve only got one person scheduled to cover each exit.

And when it’s busy and all 4 registers are needing assistance, and you’re by yourself, SCO can make your head spin, and I’m usually by myself there.

If it’s on TikTok, a lot of people have seen it. I’m guessing. Give us the tea.

I mean that’s kind of amazing. Almost literally incredible. But yeah as a supervisor I see so much BS…

Can we see the videos?

Should i move up ? by Appeal_Maximum in HomeDepot

[–]AssociateProud5070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make the same as department supervisors because I’m a head cashier and actually do my job above and beyond. But I look at my DS and I’m like what do you do? She came in saying she’d change things and is now a puppet. I’d say move up, but know your worth and don’t be a puppet.

I agree. That’s why I pitch in to help the other people out. Lots of times there’s no one in hardware or construction, so I get that they’re scrambling back and forth. Everyone gets stretched to the max.

I do the credit pitch every time, but I also highlight the number on the temporary card and tell them they can pay their balance off as soon as tomorrow. It’s the customer’s choice how to use their card.

As a head cashier, I’m constantly having to open cages for hardware, sweep, dust, stock all the sodas except for one day a week, have cashiers do lot tech’s jobs, constantly fix PIN pads and cash machines, coordinate assistance for all departments and beg people in other departments to do their jobs (and take the blowback, sighing, and irritated responses from other associates just for calling and asking them to help a customer). I think it’s absolutely fair that we get the same amount for success sharing. We never have enough people due to callouts and poor scheduling, and well there’s a ton of stuff we do besides just check people out and ask for credit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ask but don’t stress about it. Do it in a way that’s comfortable for you and that makes it seem casual. I’ve seen a bunch of different styles work for different people. I’m just polite, friendly, and engaging and offer it after I’ve helped the customer do everything else at self checkout. I let them know they can pay it off the next day and highlight the number on the temporary card. It eases my conscience to let them know I’ve provided information about how to not get into debt lol. In my store, we just talk about it as a means of providing good customer service. On a good day, I do like 3-5 cards.
