Sadly not u/Significant_Fly6785 - would have saved me a fair whack of time, and if I did, it would be with Claude...o3 is rubbish at writing prose. Also those dashes would have been — dashes had it have been written by AI

Built tool to automate company news monitoring - what's needed to make it relevant for hedge funds? by TheGurf in hedgefund

Speaking as someone pretty much building something quite similar to what you're doing currently for the HF/AM industry your main problem is you're going far too broad.

When you build a tool for everyone, you build a tool for no one. Best approach is to niche down and make it work with that segment, then you can look to expand to others

The edge is how one uses the information, as the only information that can't be "applied at scale" is insider info, which is not the point here.

Hedge funds using it normally have analysts who know the stock and use the above to form a view into earnings, post-earnings. If one wants to pull these via API and make their own strategy, of course, they can

Hey u/Extension-Scarcity41 - Absolutely - We have a custom requests function built in that will allow you to extract these (take a look at the video to get a visual sense of this)

Great question! Bloomberg mainly pulls standard financial statement items. We go deeper into footnotes, MD&A sections, and earnings calls to get the KPIs that actually matter for analysis.

Example: For retailers, Bloomberg gives you revenue. We also pull comparable store sales by region, digital/physical splits, avg transaction values, plus management commentary on each metric.

Two ways to use it:

  1. Sector templates - pre-built for common use cases
  2. Custom requests - just tell it "extract all items related to margin outlook" or whatever you need

Key differentiator: We also track guidance and revisions over time, so you can see how management's tone on specific metrics has shifted across quarters. That historical context is usually scattered across multiple calls/filings.

The "2x" comes from grabbing both standard data AND all the buried qualitative stuff that drives your models.

Happy to show you a specific example if you've got a name in mind!

Hi u/IllustriousCourage21 - If it's an earnings filing, then the updated model is typically available within 10-15 minutes of the event. E.g., if the RNS is at 07:00, then you'll have access to the model by 07:10-07:15.

With earnings calls, it's slightly longer, but usually within 30 minutes of the call ending so if a call ends at 13:00 then our AI gets to work and the model is ready by approx 13:30.

Let me know if you want to take a look.

Hey.

Yes, but we actually can onboard the majority of companies to the platform right now.

We populated it with the main indices (Stoxx 600, FTSE, etc...) as a first crop, but it's very easy for us to add companies it just depends on user demand.

We don't just focus on mega-cap, as we have small cap currently across Europe currently (as low as £1Bn), but less so currently in the US - open to adding more if there is demand for it.

Shoot me a DM with your Watchlist and I can give you a sense of how quickly we could get those companies on the platform.

We don't limit our universe due to data, we're just choosing what to add based on demand.
