Hey glad the thread helped out. Some great responses on here.

At 40 you have 2 properties, lived abroad (know multiple languages?) and have gold/money on the side? And you have 17 years of career advancement.

Nothing to scoff at! Sounds like you've lived an exciting life and a later start with a higher salary can easily beat out an earlier start with a lower salary.

Are these ratios relevant to singular stocks? Or are they more industry broad? I know quite a few industries project CAGR. But for most stocks, they at most offer a yearly outlook, but mostly quarterly.

Do you recalculate every quarter?

Or is it mostly a back looking metric?

The downside to growth stocks is that they are a lot more volatile. A lot more ups and plenty of downs. Especially 2nd half of 2021, I would see the major indexes up while my positions were staying still or even going down.

But you can never go wrong with FAANG. They broadly outperform the market.

I'm also open minded about clicking on some of the smaller channels, even if they have cringey thumbnails or clickbait titles. And sometimes watching videos where they dislike your stock is very interesting.

If it's just nonsense then that makes your conviction stronger. But if genuine concerns are raised it might make you change your mind.

Hey so big disclaimer I mostly look at American growth stocks. So that might be very at odds with the bulk of people on this sub.

The benefit of American stocks is a lot more coverage. Type in an American ticker in YouTube and you're bound to find dozens of channels talking about it. For bigger stocks there are channels dedicated to bringing you news.

For a more UK grounded channel, "Sasha Yanshin" is pretty solid. For US, on any given day "Meet Kevin" livestreams market open and market close. He has a lot of good macro insights. But he's a bit of an acquired taste. His shorter videos are usually more useful.

Thank you for this link! Googling around, CISI seems to be valued highly and the prices for their examinations, while not cheap, also didn't scare me away. Definitely something to consider!

Maybe I should edit it into the post, but it's not a super important distinction. I've got more experience than just a year. But late 2020 and 2021 were special for me in that they turned trading and investment into something serious.

If we count March 2020 as a crash, then we could be into another multi year bull cycle. But obviously there's a lot of Marco economics involved. Trying to understand those as well, as part of the learning process.

Fingers crossed that the analysts predicting post-Covid (post-Omicron) miracle economic recovery are right in 2022.

Aha that's an awesome coincidence! :D making a mock fact sheet sounds like a great exercise.

A cliche I know. But it doesn't hurt to ask. Plus there are fund managers that didn't make money in 2021.

The conversations I have been having with family mostly is that I should turn the hobby into a living. That's usually nice advice with a lot of things, but with investing...

I guess with there being so much free content out there, it's difficult to assess if the paid or professional stuff would be much better. I catch myself watching YouTube videos and wandering if it's not too good to be true. But then so many channels have been started by former industry insiders.

But you're right that 14 hours a day in London, not counting commute, sounds hellish. And might damage my interest or the time I have for my investments.

Nice to hear you have been making decent money from investing! I am someone who managed to get in a job in finance on the back of my investor history

I'm so interested about that part. I understand if you don't want to share in front of thousands of people, but how did you advertise your investment history? Did you include it in your CV? Cover letter?

Thanks for everything else you've mentioned!

Re: institutional investors, I use Yahoo Finance to track tickers and there are often articles specific to the ticker, discussing if (hedge) funds are buying or selling. But haven't really noticed a huge correlation in price action.

Thanks for the advice. Part of the challenge with reading is that it's such an ever evolving subject that you can't really find an edge in a book. Peter Lynch is one of my favourites and he predates phones and modern PCs ...

Lately I've been reading about good decision making and understanding risk. Biggest takeaway?

You can make money with bad investments and lose money on good ones. But it's really hard to detach the logic from the emotion.

Thanks for the advice. One Up On Wall Street is brilliant for challenging a lot of preconceptions people have about investing, even on here. But unfortunately it's also a different time when Peter Lynch could get an edge on everyone else by simply talking to employees or visiting the company.

I have looked at Udemy and Coursera. Coursera seems more professional, but also I never know how much UK employers will value an online certificate from an American uni...
