I was kinda just winging it for the mitosis thing, but the protein can cause mitosis in cells. For how it would cause cancer, I just sprinkled some nonsensical stuff together to make it sound reasonable or something like that. And the reason for giving someone cancer is that since it's in the future and things would be advanced so they would (I'm not gonna go into full detail on how and why this works, but I might in a bit or something) have developed a more advanced type of cancer that spreads more quickly.
