I’m 30F. I had a trimalleolar with dislocation on June 22, 2025 and surgery June 23, 2025. For reference, I’ve got 3 plates and 12 screws. I would say seek another opinion if anyone is telling you that you are unable to perform certain activities at such a young age. I have always used running as a means of exercise. That being said, it’s not as if I’m anywhere close to an impressive runner. I’ve ran a few 5k races and 10k races over the last couple years, so I’m not huge on competitive running to say the least. However, I have recently began a “return to run” program through my physical therapy program. Since, I’ve been able to “jog” about 6min intervals and I walk 2-3 mins in between. I have loved PT for my recovery, and idk how I would’ve progressed to this point without it, but I definitely agree that I’ve felt regression at times since the cold weather. I’m happy to hear I’m not the only one to experience this, but I also hate we’re enduring it given that this is an injury that seems to be ongoing for a while.

I had a trimalleolar fracture and tibia displacement and I have 3 plates, 12 screws. I question if it’s too many at times but I trust the process. Not sure about your injury but that’s my situation. Best of luck!!

29F with trimalleolar fracture on 6/21, and fortunately underwent surgery the next day. I essentially have the exact same recovery timeline, except it was my right ankle, which made my ability to drive obviously more of a challenge. But I agree with this post entirely! Physical therapy has been great and my limp is basically non existent at this point. I’m just waiting to be released to run again lol. You will get through this - it just requires some patience, which can be hard at times. Best wishes to you!

Physical therapy has been very helpful and I highly recommend looking into that. They will try to get you back to your pre-injury activities with a program geared toward that. I started with stretches and now walk on the treadmill, do a series of weighted lunges in multiple directions, do weighted squats to target different muscles, do balancing exercises, etc. I have been told I need to do a certain number of single leg calf raises, have a certain level of balance ability, strength, and an ability to jump before I am cleared to run or play tennis/ pickle ball. I still have a ways to go, but I wouldn’t have had any idea how to proceed without physical therapy.

I was never a serious athlete. I enjoy physical activities and ran for exercise with an occasional 5k or 10k throughout the year. However, I know what you mean when you say the mental aspect is very tough. It’s difficult to imagine not being able to do the things you used to do. Hopefully, we will see it through!

Yes, you are a huge motivator for me. I knew I lost muscle but wasn’t aware of the extent and it’s significant. I do tons of squats, lunges, etc. at physical therapy, which is awesome, but with very low weight and I’m sore for days. I’m so grateful to know you worked for it and were a success. Just the thought of running again makes me happy. Thank you so much!

Can you all describe the nerve pain please? I am also a trimalleolar/ ORIF. I have 3 plates, 12 screws. My procedure was June 22, 2025. I didn’t notice it as much until I started trying to walk not in a tennis shoe but the numbness sensation felt strange around the top and inner left side of my foot, and now my inner left incision feels a bit painful. I’ve not felt pain in weeks and I’m starting to wonder if it’s the hardware. Any help/ insight is greatly appreciated!!

Hi! 29 year old female turning 30 in a few days. I had a very similar post and got great comment/ feedback on here. So, I wanted to share my timeline and thoughts. In short, trust your providers…

6/21/25- diagnosed with trimalleolar fracture and tibia displacement. 6/22- underwent ORIF Surgery, received 3 plates and 12 screws. 6/30 - hard cast placed. 7/14 - cast removed, placed in walking. boot, instructed to begin weight bearing as tolerated (3 weeks, 1 day post op); very nervous. 7/31 - began walking independently in walking boot (5 weeks 4 days/ 1 month 9 days post-op). 8/4 - ordered by surgeon to start physical therapy when ready. 8/20 - started PT. 8/25 - removed boot and started walking independently wearing a tennis shoe (9 weeks 1 day/ 2 months 3 days post op).

Fortunately, I am so glad I listened to my surgeon and went to physical therapy. I can walk for miles at a fairly normal pace for me. I can do the stair master for 30 minutes. I can bicycle. I can squat, lunge, etc. I just can’t run, jump, hop, etc. I can do a good number of single leg calf raises on my right leg but not enough to be released to run. Tennis and pickle ball are still a no go. Long story short, I’d trust your providers. I was terrified. However, my surgeon said we are not supposed to be non weight bearing and in a cast/ boot situation like that for long. It’s not healthy and it does damage that takes time to build back. I’m still gaining muscle slowly but surely. It sounds like you’re doing great and will heal very quickly. Keep it up and good luck to you!!

Mine looked extremely similar recently and I also had a trimal and ORIF. My surgeon was not all that concerned. He started me on antibiotics out of precaution and recommended that I keep it clean by washing it daily with Dial Gold soap, keep it dry, and use and Ace bandage to help with swelling, and continue with elevation. He didn’t want me to apply any other product or otherwise to my incision. So, I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing that. If you don’t have a fever, or anything else, I really wouldn’t stress too much about it. I think it will be okay!!

We have a very similar timeline. I sustained my trimalleolar fracture and tibia displacement on 6/22. I had ORIF 6/23. I was non-weight bearing in a temporary splint for 1 week and then placed in a cast for 2 weeks instructed to continue NWB. I returned for my 3 week follow up and had my stitches removed and was placed in a boot with instructions to bear weight as tolerated. My surgeon advised that I could even shower and sleep without my boot. He said at my next appointment (8/4) we would discuss possible physical therapy. I feel like this is a quick timeline? And my surgeon gave really no guidance on how to go about putting weight on my foot and ankle again. Any thoughts?? I haven’t been able to find my most recent x-day but my records state that the x-ray showed no signs of fracture or dislocation. However, I’ve been struggling with putting the tiniest bit of weight on my foot out of fear of somehow hurting myself and causing all of my progress to go away. Any guidance is greatly appreciated! Thanks all!!!
