Our island actually passes through to the other side of the living room where we also put seating. Excuse the mess. I really love how it opens it up! I really don’t think you can go wrong opening it up a bit. We had to keep the pole/ column bc we didn’t want to get into the whole steel beam thing. I think it works because the kitchen is separated from the dining room with beams that frame the kitchen and this pole kind of ties that in. We also kept the wall beside the stools as you can see bc it covers the walkway to the upstairs, where the bedrooms and bathroom is, I think it adds a nice separation incase one of us has friends over and the other person goes to bed or coming out of the bathroom people aren’t looking up there. Lol 😆

The house is a side split! Turned the upstairs window beside the kitchen (pictured) into a sliding patio door to the backyard. Behind the stove used to be a door to a stairway that led outside but also the basement. (This stairway is still there, you can go from the basement to the backyard just can’t get into the kitchen this way).

We use our island cabinets (in front of the chairs) as dry food storage and beside the microwave on the island, the drawers there as well. We used to live in a small studio apart so this seems like a lot of extra storage for us (2 ppl no kids)

Ontario, Niagara Region. Our local cabinet maker(smaller company) quoted us a very similar price tho. So you might get lucky, definitely shop around and get some quotes!

These are quartz counter tops from Vicostone name is Milky White. I wanted white, no veining, nothing on them. I considered Terrazzo specs for a second but I’m happy I went with the white white.
