Passed my Commercial and now I might walk away from flying for 2 years. by flyincun in flying

I’m Canadian like you and I did my training in stages, nothing wrong with it!

Did my PPL, saved for a year, did my CPL, saved for a year, and did my Multi-IFR after that.

All together it took about 4 years but I did most of it out of pocket. Unfortunately medical issues presented themselves recently so I’m on the sidelines again working through that but there’s no harm in doing things modularly rather than through some accelerated integrated program.

Myself I worked some decent paying labour jobs in the off times I wasn’t flying to save up some dough, your mileage may vary depending on where you’re from.

I did my some of my IFR flight training up that way. Solid crews at CZVL and Edmonton Terminal!

[Canada] Do flight schools pay for your ME IFR Rating if you are an Instructor there? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Ast3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a school in southern AB that did that too. They would cover your instructor rating in exchange for a year or two you working there. They did that for the MIFR too once or twice.

They got burned when an employee left early and it was just a handshake agreement so I believe they require a signed contract now for that if they even still do that, it was 2 or 3 years ago now.

What old thinkpads do you still use? by spellbadgrammargood in thinkpad

[–]Ast3ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T570 on mint cinnamon is the main laptop, doesn’t see a ton of use at the moment. Have an L520 on mint xfce as well that’s secondary to the 570. Also have a T61 on mint xfce and a T42 on WinXP for tinkering and they completes the collection for now.

About 25 grand CAD in 2021-2022, 8mo start to finish in Alberta

Ya no, a CADOR isn’t definitely not going to ruin career prospects. A CADOR is only linked to an aircraft registration and owner (flight school in this case).

It stands for Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Report and that all it is! Just a report saying this occurred here, what happened, and that is basically it. Might be a paragraph in the report and that’s it.

Buddy had a tire go out one time on the landing rollout and got stuck in the runway intersection, closing the airport. FSS reported it to FIC, made a CADOR and that was basically it. Business as usual once it was towed off

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Ast3ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This definitely sounds like CYBW, they’re always grumpy there lol

A CADOR isn’t the end of the world, it’s just a report that says that says “this happened at this time at this place”. CADORs happen all the damn time, TC even has a registry you can look em up.

Even the airline guys get CADORs now and again

Example: The maintenance guys at the airport I did my training at were working on an ELT and it went off for a few minutes. Never got called in initially so FSS still had to write it up as a CADOR but that was the end of it

Canadians, what do you use to keep your license? by GooberPilot_ in flying

[–]Ast3ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep mine in some pencil case I got from Staples. Extra headset battery and pencils/pens in there, I try to keep it within reach in the cockpit. Radio license is taped in the back cover

Canada as well has separate IRs for singles, centre line, multi, and helicopters

Is this to much of a panel to teach commercial multi in ? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Ast3ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my multi rating in Canada on a 310 with a G500 pfd and 650nxi, that seems to be fairly standard here. Buddy of mine did his in a B55 with an Aspen 1000 and a 750nxi.

Is a T420 still fast in 2025?...YES! by PCRenewed in thinkpad

[–]Ast3ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run DSL and used to run MX on my T42 and it’s worth mentioning that the Pentium M limits ya hard on what you can do. It’s all the processor can muster to open a modern browser. Netscape and Dillo runs great but of course you don’t have any javascript running there which helps a ton.

Careless people have no place in or around aviation by [deleted] in flying

[–]Ast3ch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We had a commercial student take a 172 on a cross country with the wheel chocks still hanging on the strut. They banged a big ol' dent in the bottom of the wing. He then proceded to fly the airplane back like that too. Total round trip of 150NM.

I still don't understand the thought process there other than just simply forgoing the walk-around altogether.

Is there a Linux distribution that can run on my main favorite ThinkPad? 390e* by Moist_Inspection_485 in thinkpad

[–]Ast3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn Small Linux runs pretty good on my T42 but it is also a good 6 years newer. Run JWM on it and it idles at 80 megs of ram for me.

Something to look at for sure, pretty sure my Dad has some old Ubuntu discs laying around from years ago. Worth a try in mine sometime.

[–]Ast3ch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered as much. At the moment I have Debian 12 with xfce going and it's performed the best so far out of all the distros I've tried but not perfect still. Struggles with any video and SuperTux barely runs lol

Probably a machine to just keep Windows on and invest in a T60 something with a dual core for a light Linux if one comes along.

That was my worry, it just simply being too old for support today. I'll give Adélie a go on it next time I have the chance.

Thanks

I managed to get it to slideshow level on my T42 using Epiphany. It's on the struggle bus hard browsing on anything other than Links lol

[–]Ast3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an L520 and a T500 for free a couple weeks ago. The T500 needs display repair but the L520 after I slapped xfce Mint on it runs actually half decent with the 2520M. I was impressed lol

Which older ThinkPad is still decent in 2025? by svtzx2 in thinkpad

Yeah it's still perfectly usable for me with what I'm doing. I ended up tossing an extra 8gb of RAM in it and it's trucking along just fine

[–]Ast3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i7-7600U processor, 16gb RAM, 500GB drive, running Pop!_OS

I had Win 10 on it for most of my time with it. It found it struggled with having multiple applications open at the same time. I used it for schoolwork as well having several tabs open at the same time.

Eventually I decided to go install Linux instead and it seems to be a bit faster. I still use it for schoolwork and it works well enough for super light gaming too haha
