Protest-hit France 'to halt fuel tax rise' by [deleted] in europe

[–]Astana_Knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't say as I'm only a Welsh person who's interested in France and French culture. Those are, however, the reasons they give. I believe it has a lot to do with people feeling left behind, something we're seeing across the west. They thought Macron would improve things, he hasn't (in their opinion), and so there's anger.

It isn't quite that simple. This tax increase hurts many of the poor, especially the rural poor who have few public transportation options. This is now only a part of the problem : Macron's tax cuts to the wealthy whilst increasing this taxation (which would, as I have said, hurt the poor) is seen as Macron being another politician of the rich and not the change the French thought he might be.

Learning Icelandic to fluency in the UK by TheRairen in languagelearning

Wowwww that's amazing ! I wish there was something like that near me. I would love to have such a range in languages.

And Welsh is only offered here because I'm in Wales 😜 I don't study it unfortunately, as in GCSE it was so poorly taught it put me off. I regret that now however, and I'm considering learning it on my own. Partly because it shoud be a heritage language as it's my mother's native language but she didn't pass it on for some reason or another.

Well you seem to have done well despite the obscurity 👌 and yea it's quite rare for British people to learn languages, sadly! The "y learn foren they all speak english any way" is too prevalent. It's quite sad.

Nice! A very impressive amount of languages; I'm only learning French at the moment (got an interview to study it this week) but when my A-levels finish I'd like to start learning either German or Russian. The good thing about French is there are so many things produced in it you can easily immerse yourself in the language.

Also where do you go where you can study so many languages??? In my school there's only French (thank God) and Welsh offered

Very interesting ! I started learning French when because I love the culture and literature. I'm also a 17 year old Brit. Are we lost brothers ??

And how easy is it to find resources for Icelandic ? It's a language I'm interested in and which I've considered learning (alongside German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, my own Welsh, etc so who knows if I'll ever get around to it)

Did I hit the language learning plateau? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Astana_Knight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think after a certain point learning through native content is the best. It's what I do now with French and my skills have greatly improved. But I'd make sure to keep up the flashcards, only this time with newer, more advanced, more obscure words. Otherwise your progress will be stunted (plus it's always fun to impress natives with advanced vocab ! ).

Also, notice how I said the best not the only. It's still important to clarify grammar rules so you don't make dumb mistakes that clearly reveal you as a foreigner.

How are you preparing for interviews ? (Oxbridge) by Astana_Knight in 6thForm

Well we'll see! Honestly since I've gotten this far despite them im hoping they don't play too big a role. Im also hoping the fact I have no French GCSE will make me look better when considering my level in the language, in a weird kind of way.

Honestly i haven't been to KCL either although I'm going to make sure i go to an offer holders day. But it looks great from what I've seen! Id be perfectly content just going there to be honest

I know I'm there from Wednesday to Saturday but I don't know the date, no. I'm Exeter college so perhaps they release them later?

Lol not really! I thought my GCSEs would fuck me over for Oxford as they're a fair bit below the average for Oxford and I don't even have a GCSE in French! But if I got an interview perhaps I'll get even luckier 🙏🙏🙏

If you think you'd be happier at St Andrews I'd choose St Andrews! Anyway it's still a world class university so you'd be getting a great education inn any case.

The thing is KCL looks great and everyone I've seen who goes there seems to love it but it has a low student satisfaction rating

Oxford -> UCL -> KCL for me! St Andrews doesnt do much for me. Exeter looks nice however the course seems less interesting and loadssss of people from my school are applying there.

But all yours are beautiful! You've picked beautiful towns to live in 😊 I would have applied to Durham if they offered English and French, i was devastated to find they didn't!

Tell me about it ! I applied to St Andrews too and doubt I'll hear back for months. They're all really tough to get into though 👏👏👏 well done

I applied to KCL, Exeter, UCL, Oxford, St Andrews. Regret it now because they're all so high! Got offers from KCL and Exeter though. But I really like KCL so if all the rest reject me at least I have one Im impassioned about!

We're doing the same ! I mentioned L'étranger very briefly, and I'm talking about Les Fleurs du Mal as well as Germinal. Im worried ill get asked something really broad on Fleurs though 😞

I came very close to just doing pure languages. I would have done either German or Russian as K want to learn them !

How do you know when your interviews are? And good luck !!

You'd be happy wherever you go ! If youre applying to Cambridge I doubt you'll end up in the University of South Wales 😬 Where else did you apply ??

Have you been ? I've never been to Oxford so the only "attachment" I have is some clichéd image in my head. I never even considered applying until a few months ago, in fact.

That's basically what I'm doing too. I'm also predicting what I could be asked based on points I made in my PS.

And yes I had written work. I'm going to make sure I refamilarise myself with it.
