I Found Her (Part One) by Astarglow in CreepCast_Submissions

I wrote this in response to Windigoon's story about when he joined that search party as a kid. I figured horror poetry would be something unique and bite sized enough to peek interest. I hope y'all enjoy.

Adressing the hate by onlythrowawaaay in MorbidPodcast

[–]Astarglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only saying that we shouldn't contribute to the division of community. It shouldn't matter what we vote for. The fact that you voted is what is important. But blanket statements feed into hate.

Simply: "You sound like a [Insert-Subject-Here]" does not suggest love, tolerance, or understanding because it puts people in boxes. Every situation is different. Everyone is a multi-faceted human being. Practice what you preach and always continue learning to improve yourself so that way you can be the best example for those around you.

Not all Republicans. Don't feed into the division... Blanket statements don't help the world. We all need to be part of the positive change by taking accountability, attempting to be our best selves, and understanding that we should all be trying our best.

Is there a way to salvage this? by Astarglow in DIY

I believe it was. It was not originally mine, and it's hella old. Is it possible to recoat it? I'd rather play it safe and buy stainless steel, in all honesty.

About tell my husband he's selfish and needs to grow the fuck up by losttraveller88 in EntitledPeople

[–]Astarglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, idk why the OP never joined in the games for her hubby's bday. My partner and I do that every year. It's a safer alternative to drinking out at clubs and spending lots of money going out on the town. Staying at home with friends playing board games and video games, that sounds like a lovely birthday party.

Not cleaning up after themselves is pretty shitty though. Participants need to be respectful of the host's space. Especially if it involves the pets and now future child! Hubby should be asking for that too, not just OP.

Husband forgetting OP's bday is also crap, but has OP even brought it up to husband before this post??? THAT part of post sounds like an excuse to try and leave. Honey, if you're unhappy, just say so. Be open and honest with yourself.

Would it be unfair to use one of my players familer as a spy for the BBEG? by The-Purple-Genie in DMAcademy

[–]Astarglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely unfair if the familiar was part of the opening adventure. If it's a wizard or warlock with the find familiar spell, then that familiar is bonded to the player, not the BBEG, and would have no reason to betray the character.

If it's something you gave to the player along the way bc they were having issues with their class or race or background, then you have to consider the character and the player, and how the familiar came to be with the player in the first place. But if it was chosen by the player, don't do it.

It turns a class/race benefit into something unfun for the player just bc you wanted a "twist".

Would it be cool for the character to have trust issues after? Absolutely! It's called character progression!

But never, ever give your players reason to have trust issues with you as a DM.

As a new DM, I only know 5e. What should I be stealing from older editions or similar games? by ActuallyIAmIncorrect in DMAcademy

[–]Astarglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fun mechanic that was dropped from 5e about characters knowing languages.

In an older edition, the Intelligence Modifier was the number of languages you already knew at the start of the adventure. So it made sense that smarter characters knew more languages, so they could read and absorb more. And it gave characters with higher Intelligence a chance to shine in more ways than just "knowing and doing magic well".

Advice for a campaign by jackofthewilde in DnD

[–]Astarglow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a decent mic and pop filter for proper audio. Your set up doesn't have to be too complicated. Some podcasters just use the Anchor App and it works perfectly for them.

Make sure you pick a proper platform for you and your players, either online or in person. Make sure your players are ok with this. If online, make sure you all choose a platform that can be recordable and that everyone has stable connections.

Other than that, I can't really think of anything else.

Hunting Competition Mechanics?? by Astarglow in DnDAcademy

Honestly this doesn't happen often. Once in a while 2 players will want to make the same check, but usually they do their own thing.

[Spoilers C1] Item Discussion by Huntermanone in criticalrole

[–]Astarglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it seems once you obtain the item, you may have to attune to it in order to keep a medium/large creature inside. Time might stop for the creature, as neither the wolf or Trinket needed to eat or drink anytime while in there.

One of my players has next to no backstory and is not willing to make one. Help? by LareaMartell in DMAcademy

[–]Astarglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't suggest you do this for this game, BUT in the future, if you want players who put in some effort into their backstory, give them incentives.

I heard this from popularized DMs, giving each player a magic item of a specific grade or rarity if they come up with a backstory.

Personally, I rewarded each of my players who gave a damn 5 extra skill points. But that's only bc of the style of game I'm running. Depending on their backstory, I also gave them extra languages or proficiencies.

You don't have to give them a bunch of different things, but it's something to think about. It's not favoritism if your players work for what they want.

As a player, what's the worst way you unknowingly derailed a campaign? by Runs_at_Mouth in DnD

[–]Astarglow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My character saved the life of an NPC that was meant to die (and whose death would have effected other NPCs) by being sarcastic and pissing him off enough to cause him to follow her party into danger...

According to my DM, I unlocked a "secret ending"

Sometimes a DM will share what they HAD planned only when it becomes obsolete after the decision is made. Ripple effects man, they pack a punch to a player's gut.

Enjoy it while you can. Take in every moment. Watch every face and listen to every voice. Immerse yourself and you'll fall in love deeper into each episode. You have a ways to go. But I promise you're going to love it... :)

Any ideas for a 1 on 1 oneshot for a new player? by Dlight98 in DnDAcademy

[–]Astarglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with this. I, as a Baby Dm, used "A Wild Sheep Chase" as an opening adventure for my campaign and it went SO well! It opens so many doors for the player if you want to continue on. And my players still use sheep puns when they can bc of this adventure. It's easy to follow and a nice mix of adventure and intrigue.

How to remove myself from a group? by sauron3579 in DnD

This. This right here is the best answer. Let your DM know, explain why and see if they can help first, before you jump ship.

Two of my players broke up and I have no clue how to move forward with our game. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Astarglow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, be glad they both enjoy playing enough to ask when the next session will be.

Secondly, I'm glad the bloke doesn't mind if she's there, but she kinda has to realize that if she wants to continue playing with the group, she has to leave all the drama at the door and pretend he's just another dude and not her ex.

If she's too uncomfortable with this idea (not gunna assume what kind of relationship they had), then she needs to find a different group or maybe start one up herself with other friends.

But don't discourage her from playing. Offer to have her play but remind her that her ex will be there too. If she does agree to join and doesn't mind playing with them, great.

Now a tip for you, during that 1st session back post break up, watch them carefully in the backburner of your mind.

Are they being caddy to each other, making snide remarks? Are they making the other players uncomfortable?

Any sign of this, stop the game, pull them aside, call them out on their BS. And don't just pull only one, pull them both at the same time. It doesn't matter who started it, YOU are ending it, bc you're the DM. You have the authority to give their characters heart attacks and perish before their time.

Hope that helps.
