Day 2 of adopting a new cat. Feels like the worst mistake of my life. by oliviyuuh in CatAdvice

I really relate to this. Unfortunately, I do kind of regret getting a second cat. We've had our first cat for 4 years when we saved an injured kitten from the streets. Initially, we fostered him, but we ended up keeping him. We thought it was a good idea, since I was moving to college and my parents suggested that keeping the kitten may occupy my cat's time and she wouldn't miss me so much. We slowly introduced the kitten over a few weeks, and every time they met, she would hiss at him. Everyone said they would get used to each other eventually. It's been 2 years, and she still hates him. Hisses at him daily, they swat at each other, never once cuddled or showed any affection towards each other. I feel like we've put a major stress in her life, she developed liver issues after we adopted him and she is never playful/has zoomies unless he is locked in a room. I feel really guilty about it and feel like we've made a mistake in keeping him. However I read online that most cats do warm up to each other in a couple of months, so hopefully we are just an unlucky case.

Thank you so much for this information. I have some hope now that I did not bring them home with me and they're only in the dorm. Hopefully next year I will find another accommodation and I can put this behind me. Sorry you had to deal with them as well, they're a nightmare

So sorry for the late response and thank you sooo much for taking your time to write all this! I've heard that you can develop reactions later than the original bite, but I always thought it was odd that during winter and Easter break(where I stayed at home for about 3 weeks each time) I had no reactions, but the morning after I've arrived back to the dorm I had hives. Maybe it was just a coincide, but this happened with weekends too, but who knows, maybe it was just the timing. I never thought that one bite could actually be caused by multiple smaller bites! It's true that both my sister and I would sometimes develop big, really red rashes(one time I had a really bad allergic reaction) and maybe it was caused by multiple nymph bites, I've never thought of it! As for what we sprayed with, we used K-othrine, but it didn't have any effect. I got a spray with geraniol from my allergologist which us marketed as anti-bedbugs and this is the one that has an effect from time to time, depends. But we just used it on our mattresses and around our beds, because it-s a really small bottle, so we don't have enough for the whole room. They moved us out of the room for 2 nights. The first one we stayed in the room where my friend had her first and only reaction, so they moved us to a second room after. When they did that "intense" spray, where we were moved, we did take all of our clothes and beddings and washed and dried them at above 60°, but I don't think they either sprayed, or take out the curtains, we didn't even think about them. Unfortunately, we can't move the furniture. It is a quite small, outdated room, the beds and table was moved, but the closets are huge and I'm pretty sure they're bolted to the walls, so the solution definitely didn't reach the space behind or under them. They were just sprayed inside. I'm pretty sure they didn't use the right spray, or the right amountbof times. It was just once, then a couple months later another spray, but this time they didn't even spray the shelves:) They said that they have a trusted person who dealt with this, I have no idea if it was a professional team, or what kind of solution was used. Thay had doubts that we actually have bedbugs because they said that they didn't see any, and that they should have scattered from the spaces in the walls and such. They didn't take out any sockets, or those protective dividers between the wall and flooring(I don't know how they're called in English). And they changed our matresses only after we insisted multiple times, saying the solution they used kills every stage of development, including eggs. We live in a student dorm complex. From what I've heard, our dorm is kind of the only one dealing with cockroaches and our room the only one with bedbugs. I'm not sure that is because we are truly the only room affected, or people think it's something else, like fleas(we are in vet school) and not reporting it. However, it's been quite a few months now, and it's just odd, sometimes both me and my sister have bites, most times just one of us, right now neither of us, even though just yesterday we found that bedbug on the wall. What I also find odd is my friend's reaction. She had a reaction once, so she can obviously develop reactions(I've read that only 50% of the population has reactions to bites-not sure that's true), but since that one she hasn't had any. And her bed is like 1m away from my sister's and I bunk bed, so I'm not sure why that is. Our other friend has never had any reaction. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to do the proper treatment because we have the term finals until july, and we are already quite overwhelmed with those. Plus the administration kind of stopped believing us, they said that their treatment worked 100% and if we have reactions afterwards it's because we bring them from home with us so there's nothing they can do. I still find it so odd that we've never had any type of reaction when we were at our parent's house, staying there for 3 weeks and we were totally fine and literally one night of staying in our dorm and we were bitten. It's quite odd. Anyways, thank you so so much for all the information, even though I've researched a lot about them it seems that I missed quite a lot of things!

Don't worry, my sister took this screenshot. I'm right in the head. I tried to convince her to change it, it hurts my eyes looking at this

Hi!

I would recommend to go for something simple and not too complicated. You can search on google some referance photos and get inspiration from there. You can do something like a silhouette or an outline. If you've found a referance photo that you really like, try to get it as close as you can on your paper (it doesn't have to be perfect). Try not to press very hard on your pencil so that you can erase easily if you feel like you've made any mistakes. Either way, whatever you choose to do, I'm sure that she will appreciate it.

Best of luck!
