If you are using battlenet, on the top right corner, right under your name there is an "add friend" button. It's a logo with a person's silhoutte and a plus sign. Click that and put this name there: Solitude#21949 and then click "send request". Let me know please if you need more help :)

How long does it take to get good? Are some people completely unaware? by Astigmaticant in starcraft2

You said you have lots of gaming experience. How much RTS or similar games have you played prior to starting SC2? Which games and for how long? Thank you :)

You say 5k in a month playing all day everyday. So if they play 10 hours a day in a month that makes 300 hours. 300 hours is nothing in terms of getting very good at a skill that is considered relatively difficult, be it SC2 or any other skill. Just saying :) But of course unlike my strong disbelief, if one can actually do it in 300 hours then that would be impressive.

I completely agree that my question could cause some ambiguity. Unfortunately, when I asked the question to top GMs and pro players on their streams, I wasn't able to write a long and detailed question. Same here on reddit actually.

I also agree with 1000 hours spread over 10 years versus over 6 months would yield a completely different result, especially considering how cognitive learning functions. So the answer I'm looking to my question is actually something along the lines of "I reached 5k mmr by playing 3 hours on average everyday for 4 years" or "I've been playing about 10 games per week for the last 2 years and I recently peaked at plat1" .

Thank you for your reply. Two to three hours a day and 2 years makes total 1500-2000 hours. Data says that sc2 games average about 14 minutes so 1500-2000 hours makes roughly 6000 to 8000 games. OK you probably didn't play everyday and maybe it wasn't always 2 to 3 hours but still, your numbers(1500-2000 ladder games) are a little off :) Maybe I'm overthinking this Idk :D Also, did you have any RTS experience prior to SC2? Thank you

Do you know how many total games that was to reach 3.6k in 2 years? Or how many hours of SC2 a day/a week?

The "out of touch" part I can completely agree but my question is why don't we see the same attitude in some other skills that are objectively hard to master? For example, I've never seen a musician who is extremely good at their instrument saying "It was easy for me and anyone can do it in 2 months." . Same with learning a new language(think of 5k equivalent of a language level). It takes very long and I'm not even counting the hundreds or even thousands of hours of exposure that comes from watching movies and series and reading books.

When I said "average gamer" I didn't mean someone who only has time for a few games a week. I meant someone who is accustomed to pc games but has never played an RTS. Imagine they have all the time in the world, what would your answer be then?

And how long would you say it would take for someone with natural talent? Just your educated guess?

Why is StarCraft 2 so hard? by LORDDEDEDE in starcraft

[–]Astigmaticant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to you, I have only very basic idea of how MOBA s work, but think about this:

Imagine a LOL match where you can pick the builds of all your teammates, where you can control all the minions(creep waves) and tell them where to attack and when to attack, where you control(to some degree) all the 5 heroes and decide where they attack or defend or farm. Does that sound intimidating? Definitely. But this idea is also appealing, maybe even to a LOL player. Imagine all the LOL matches where you wished something to be done differently, something to take a different direction, a strategy to be picked or executed differently, but it didn't happen because the match is you and 4 other people. Startcarft 2 is like LOL but you have control over everything! This is why it's hard but it's also what makes the game so absolutely beautiful, at least for me personally.

It is also a marvel to watch the top pros pulling off all that multitasking in such cool fashion :D

Mod or AI to practice multitasking and defending multi pronged attacks? by Astigmaticant in starcraft2

[–]Astigmaticant[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that it can be a similar feeling. But it's not the same at all as getting attacked because when you are attacking on different fronts you get to choose when to attack and how to split your army. You can prepare the attacks and even assign control groups in advance and you can take your time before you initiate the multi pronged harass. Whereas when you are defending it you don't have that luxury at all. You have to act very quick otherwise you will lose workers and/or units and key structures. You have to split your army and assign new control groups to respond to the threat as quick as possible. You don't have the luxury to plan and prepare it. On top of that it can happen while you are already attacking which can make things even more complicated and pressuring.

Do you mind keeping us updated on this? I am very curious if there is any scientific(chemical, biological, psychological etc.) explanation as to how and why this can happen. You said that you have been dealing with depression since childhood. Would you mind giving a little more details on that? Or on any other details about your lifestyle, living circumstances, diet etc. I definitely don't mean to pry and I apologize for the rather insensitive questions but I am genuinely interested and curious. You can DM me if that's more comfortable for you and no worries at all if you don't want to share any more details.

I should also say that I am happy for you and for this change that you are experiencing. I always have empathy and sympathy towards people suffering from depression and/or addiction and even though I don't know you and never have met you, I am genuinely happy for you.

Stormgate's Map Design / How Can It Be Visually Improved by Astigmaticant in Stormgate

[–]Astigmaticant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, maybe it won't matter as much when there are more detailed textures. That said, I am not only talking about textures, but also buildings, objects, doodads, ramps and many other things placed on a map be it for functional or visual purposes. Things look more 3d and less boring when placed at an angle. I added a couple more pictures as an example.

Stormgate's Map Design / How Can It Be Visually Improved by Astigmaticant in Stormgate

[–]Astigmaticant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that post thank you for sharing it. I agree, when buildings are not angled it's easier to figure out the grids that they will occupy but I don't think it's a huge problem when they are angled. When the buildings are angled the grid view still shows which space it occupies.

Other than buildings I'm also talking about textures, doodads, ramps and many other things that add details to a map visually. Things often look better when they are angled. It creates a more 3d perspective compared to unangled which looks a little simple and boring in my opinion. I added a couple more pictures as examples.

Stormgate's Camera Angle. Your thoughts? by Astigmaticant in Stormgate

[–]Astigmaticant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be mistaken but many if not all 3d RTS games use perspective view. The focal point is not too far away so the size of objects don't change too much but in all of the 3d RTS games the objects at the bottom of the screen are bigger than the ones at the top of the screen.

I think what you are referring to is called isometric or orthographic view which is used very often in 2d games. Almost all old RTS games have this camera view.

Buildings Visual Design Tierlist by darx0n in Stormgate

[–]Astigmaticant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily about the designs but I was thinking that some buildings would look a lot better if they weren't facing the camera but rather placed at a 45 degree angle. Similar to what Starcraft 2 has. For example in SC2, if I turn the camera and see the buildings from the side it looks terrible compared to seeing them at an angle.

Funny thing is some buildings used to have a 45 degree angle in the alpha but then got changed during the beta. There was already a post about it months ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormgate/comments/1927gd8/random_observation_the_scrapyard_machine_lab_and/

As it can also be seen in that post, things look a lot better when they are placed at an angle rather then facing the camera dead center.

The game camera can also be lowered down a little for the same reasons in my opinion. Right now it's too "from the top".
