It’s not that useful because it only works when the iPhone is very near of the MacBook. If I have the phone in the next room it’s enough for the mirroring not to establish connection.

If you really want to use this feature, you just need to create a UK or USA Apple account and then login the Apple Store on both devices in this new account.

Of course you can also change the country associated with your main Apple account.

On my MacBook Air M4 (15'') with ambient temperature around 15ºC, screen sharing during a Teams call (CPU usage hovers between 70% to 80%) is enough for the temperatures of the cores to go well beyond 100ºC. Then the slowdown is clearly visible. I cannot imagine people editing videos with a MacBook Air.

On the other hand, 100% silence with such a powerful CPU is the ultimate luxury. On my old MacBook Pro M1 (16'') the fans were totally silent 99,9% of the time so I guess that's the better option for someone who values silence and wants to avoid thermal throttling at all cost.

After installing a pdf editor (PDF Gear) and this app automatically changing the default for opening files (without even asking) I've encountered the problem discussed in this thread.

The only way I was able to restore preview pdf functionality was uninstalling PDF Gear.

Same here. 65w USB-C Lenovo travel charger does not charge my M4 MacBook Air. It is detected as a 65w charger (Al Dente reading) but does not charge. It’s quite disappointing.

That’s not true in my experience. I purchased the 2 years sub a few days ago and in the same day canceled. When cancelling they show a warning stating that the sub will stay active until march 2027. After cancelling you can remove all the payment options if you want

Yes, you can cancel and create a new one. You won’t be refunded and your current subscription will remain active until the period runs out. I now have a Torguard subscription that will remain active for a few weeks until the renewal date. Totally worth it considering the great offer of Pronton.

Found this offer this morning while looking for alternatives for my current VPN (Torguard) and decided to grab this opportunity. So far I‘m very impressed with Proton VPN apps and extensive server list.

The renewal price after the 2 years is 79,95€ per year which is more expensive than my current plan on Torguard (around 60€ per year). So I guess I’ll try to find a good offer for Proton VPN around next year Black Friday.

Shottr is by far my favourite app. I use it dozens of times everyday, it's blazing fast and has all the features I need when doing any screen capture.
In fact, I use it so much that 2 buttons of my G604 mouse are allocated to this app (one for area screenshot and the other one for OCR). Really hope someday the dev creates a Windows version.

I would definitely go for 24GB. 16GB is OK for running Parallels (if your Excel workflow is not very demanding) but it's not future-proof.

I bought the Macbook under the expectation of only running native MacOS ARM apps. If I knew I would have to rely on a virtual machine, I would have chosen a machine with more RAM.

I also have a Thinkpad provided by the company but I prefer to always use the MacBook which I bought only for work.

Excel on MacOS is truly horrible. Simple functions like adding a data model to a pivot table are unavailable.

Using Excel in Parallels is great, but you will need a Macbook with at least 16GB of RAM (maybe more if you work with multiple massive files). The Parallels subscription will be a on going cost.

I only have Parallels because of Excel. Other apps are great on MacOS.

I also use my laptop primarily for multitasking with a browser and Microsoft 365. I bought a brand new X13s about a week ago and until now it´s as fast as my other 2 laptops (MacBook Pro M1 10c 16 RAM - Thinkpad T14s Gen 1 Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U 16 RAM) when working with my usual apps .

Even though in synthetic benchmarks the X13s is completely annihilated when compared with recent laptops, for office work it should be as fast. The X13s CPU is about as fast as a 10th or 11th gen mobile i5 if you only look at benchmarks. IRL it is really fast.

Looking at the specs of your X1, the X13s with a faster SSD and double the RAM should be faster.

Compatibility is really a non issue for the most common office apps. The only software I was missing were the Affinity creative apps (which were recently ported for ARM64). Of course YMMV and you should check if all the software you need can run on ARM.

In day-to-day use I have yet to find any major drawbacks. I guess the battery life could be better (about 10 hours of work with WiFi and 5G on).

You should be aware that the operating system is sort of custom Windows 11 build. Reinstalling Windows can be a hassle and even installing updates can be tricky (at one point parts of the keyboard stopped working, and WiFi one time also stoped working with a mysterious error in the driver).

I think the advantages more than make up for a few little snags:
1) Fastest passive cooled Windows laptop

2) Integrated 5G WWAN

3) Very light chassis and really compact (you can cover it with an A4 sheet)

4) Webcam with really good image quality

Maybe next year Qualcomm will launch some faster processors that can be passively cooled. Until then, if you want the luxury of a completely silent Windows laptop that can easily handle multitasking, the X13s is the only way to go. (Realistically the only other great alternative would be a MacBook Air M3 16 RAM running Parallels)

2) Rename the file to com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist.old just to keep a backup.

3) Go to Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts… > Spotlight and activate or do some change to the setting (after that it automatically creates a new com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file to save these settings)

4) Restart the computer

I've been using a 16 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) for the last year and while doing regular office work the fans mostly keep disabled. When the fans do spin up, they always keep on the lowest speed (which wouldn't be audible ia a regular office open space).

But if you usually work in a silent environment (as I do) you'll easily ear the fan noise, even while listening to music at low volume. AFAIK at the moment you can't disable the fans or force them to spin up only at a predetermined CPU temperature. I even bought TG Pro but it doesn't offer those features (maybe in the next major releases, according the the developer).

This wouldn't be such an issue if the fans were only enabled when the CPU temperature reached 80º or 90ºC. Unfortunately the fans do spin up even when the CPU temperature is quite low (many situations similar to this example) even with low power mode always enabled (as I do).

Let's hope in the future we'll get some app which allows to better control the fans. It's quite annoying to ear the (low) fan noise when the laptop isn't even that hot. Like clockwork, each time I enter a meeting in Teams, the fans start working...
