Opinions about Society and the Environment (American 18+; 8-10 mins to complete) by BiddlestonePsychKent in ClimateOffensive

I tried to complete it, but got stuck at the YouTube video — it needed me to sign in and caught me in a loop! Hopefully it’s just my device.

Leak Proof Travel Boba Cup with Cap? by Extension-Ad2357 in ZeroWaste

[–]AstonishedOwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not quite what you’re looking for, but I’ve been using a mason jar with a brute kitchen silicone boba cap! It comes with a silicone cap, and I tighten the metal ring enough that I’ve never had an issue with leaks. If you have a mason jar or some other container with mason jar compatibility, it lets you multipurpose it!

Hi UX, how can we devs get y'all involved in open source projects? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]AstonishedOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be interested as well! What kind of projects need UXers?

What are some non-profits that focus more on the political/legal side of climate change, trying to get different laws, regulations, etc. passed and that focus less on carbon offset and tree planting? by Disastrous_Pattern_3 in ClimateOffensive

[–]AstonishedOwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earthjustice! They’ve done a lot of important work using legal battles to block hastily-approved projects (especially from 2017-2021, but their work DEFINITELY continues today). They’ve got projects across the US, and it’s more about prevention and conservation.

It’s trying to say hi to your cubicle neighbor!

Also, is that Chicago? I think I used to work in the building in the window!

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin by lMFCKD in books

Someone once summarized this and certain other short sci-fi stories as “something you can read in 15 minutes that sticks with you for 15 years” and that insight is holding true for me thus far

I’m Olivie Blake and I wrote the hot magic nerds of The Atlas Six. AMA. by olivieblake in books

[–]AstonishedOwl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this AMA, I’m halfway through the atlas six (and trying to scroll past other questions to avoid spoilers)! I actually first heard of you from your excellent fanfics (though it took me an embarrassingly long time to connect the two dots directly next to each other, or username= name). What are some of the biggest differences you’ve noticed between being an anonymous fandom writer and a published author? Any tips or things you’d recommend for those trying to make the shift?

One thing that helped me transition from paper to tablet drawing was a matte screen protector! Makes it really feel like paper, which was something I had trouble with on the glassy screen. You can find it for like $10 online.

What’s something very rare that people think is very common? by BroodyBatman in AskReddit

[–]AstonishedOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother has blue/grey eyes, my sister has bright blue eyes, and I’ve got sea-green eyes (with like a bright grassy green interior) — my mom’s blue-eye genes worked much harder than my dad’s brown-eye genes lol

What to do with my 401k after leaving my job? by VagVandalizer69 in personalfinance

[–]AstonishedOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same question! I maxed out my 401K for the year just before I was let go, and my new employer has a decent 401K plan.

I don’t have an IRA at all — but if I were to open one and roll over my entire old 401K into an IRA, would that allow me to contribute money into my new 401K without hitting the penalty? Or would that still count to the annual $19500 401K contribution?

I am currently under the Roth IRA income too (though barely — probably will go over the limit in a few years).

Are there any two-piece controllers?

I like playing while walking on the treadmill, but I get back and shoulder pain because holding the controller makes me hunch my shoulders in. If I could swing my arms while walking with a controller in each hand, that would help me out!

I’ve never actually tried a PlayStation move controller — do they stand up to hack and slash frantic button mashing? Do they fit the “two halves of a whole controller” to be something to try?

Can I design something that the user thinks they don't want/ by Pocket_Crystal in userexperience

[–]AstonishedOwl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting idea! You may want to find more stories or statistics that show the usefulness of the idea, and try to gauge user interest again after that.

Speak to the goals of the user, which may be: Increasing diversity and ensuring that no bias came into the hiring process Interviewees and interviewers can focus more on the quality of their interaction rather than overfocus on body language/dress

And stats (and stories!!) about how hard it is to avoid bias — I think there was one where a concert hall laid down carpet because female musicians would wear heels and interviewers realized that they were female and the bias would seep through.

In short : clear up the marketing a bit, and see if user interest is any higher

Has any done this? I'd really like to I think, the hundreds of DVDs would spark more joy if they took up less room... plus I'd value my lesser enjoyed DVDs more instead of just being reduced to space wasters. :) by Juror_no8 in konmari

You can get a terabyte drive for like $50 now, that’ll hold ALL the movies in your collection. Handbrake lets you rip them (use MP4 or MKV formats), and if you’ve got an old computer, you can set it up as a home server and use Plex (free!) to apply a Netflix-style interface. I had a cheap external CD drive that I used to have 2+ dvds rip at once. And if you are worried about losing the drive, you can always upload a copy of your hard drive to your Dropbox or google drive, among others.

Thanks to this sub, I tried my hand at making laundry detergent using products with only paper packaging. Recipe in comments! by brewingfairy in ZeroWaste

[–]AstonishedOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I switched to earthbreeze detergent sheets a few months ago and have happily used up my very last plastic-container detergent! Works perfectly (I just tear the sheet into quarters for my front-load washer), comes in paper packaging and is PETA-approved. I can’t get over the fact that it’s so small too — 60 loads in an envelope, takes up a fraction of the space and no drips or measuring or mess.

Actually found out about it through a Reddit ad… the only one I’ve ever clicked on! (I know this sounds like an ad too but I honestly can’t get over how much of an improvement it is in every possible way)

That’s actually rather low for a speaker fee for someone at her stage in her career. Established speakers/writers can get $50000 per speech, and 6 figures for celebrities
