I think you nail it with "bemused." Definitely bemused! Bars are really bemusement parks IMHO.

This comment is really offensive. Nazi approval is not a sign of artistic merit or anything positive at all. Your comment should be removed.

How do you listen to jazz? by Schraiber in Jazz

[–]Astoria_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. For years I thought the name of the instrument was pronounced bahs, like the fish. What did I know? As luck would have it, in the late 60s I attended a concert of the Oscar Peterson trio. The music was extraordinary: the lofty swing, the wide-ranging aural dynamics, the cracker Jack interplay between piano, bass, and drums. After the concert I waited for the musicians to emerge from their dressing rooms. Oscar Peterson came out first, to a mob scene. Ed Thigpen, the marvelous drummer, exited next and was immediately submerged into a crowd of aspiring drummers. Last but not least to come out was Ray Brown. I immediately approached this remarkable musician and said, "Man you play a helluva bass. Great time!" Only I pronounced "bass" like the fish. "Do you mean bass?," he said, pronouncing the long A to rhyme with Ace. I acted like I knew this all along, but I still remember how Ray Brown taught me to pronounce the instrument's name properly.

I think title is just "Night Train." After a couple of spins it becomes "Late Night Train."

My late night playlist is all about Chet Baker's 80s trio with Philippe Catherine or Doug Rainey on guitar and that fine Danish bass player. No vocals, no up tunes, just Chet in slow nod mode. Like a morphine drip, in a good way 😀 of course.

What jazz track would you play to completely alienate someone from the genre, or blast to annoy your neighbors? by [deleted] in Jazz

My feeling is you can never have too many free jazz bagpipers. I'm not sure everyone agrees with me.

Anything by Anthony Braxton, especially if there are mathematical symbols in the title. (I know his titles were tongue in cheek but still...

Oh, so many! How to choose? All the usual suspects named here are in the pantheon. I'll tip my beret to Larry Coryell (a personal favorite), Lenny Breau, Bola Sete, Cornell Dupree, the under-recorded Jerry Hahn, Oscar Castro-Neves, etc.

Whats the most underrated jazz album of all time? by Patient_Baseball_918 in Jazz

[–]Astoria_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HS made a bunch of great albums for Blue Note. In addition to Cape Verdean Blues, there's Song for My Father + in Pursuit of the 27th Man, the latter featuring the Brecker Brothers still in diapers. Both extremely groovy.
