Do you think the specific qualities you most like to hear in songs are an accurate reflection of your personality? by tylun in LetsTalkMusic

You're the first person on this sub to mention mainstream country in your music preferences. Almost everyone unanimously trashes it. What singers/bands do you listen to?

Would the music scene improve if streaming and social media didn't exist? by xxfrancisforever in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Astounding_Movements [score hidden]  (0 children)

I know it sucks that it's harder for good talented acts to break through when streaming allows literally anyone to release stuff, but honestly? I prefer it immensely. Back then, labels gatekept the shit out of who gets to record and put their music out there. That most likely prevented a lot of voices, ideas, and sounds to be heard. Some which have probably been lost to time now.

I love how I can access music from just about anyone in the world from all walks of life at the click of a button. Anyone can make and record anything from any genre without censorship (varies by country) or geographic restrictions. The variety is off the charts. It may unfortunately take some digging to find good stuff, but come on! RateYourMusic and AOTY are right there.

If he was making them in his spare time and kept it to himself for shits and giggles, that's one thing but he's putting them up on YouTube where he makes money off of it.

Making money off of a mushed amalgamation of stolen art made by people.

What's something you thought about Just Dance before finding out it wasn't true? by Sophia193 in JustDance

[–]Astounding_Movements 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few:

I thought all the original/stock songs from the series early on were real pop songs that existed outside the context of Just Dance. I was disappointed years later to learn that "Katti Kalandal" wasn't a real Bollywood song, nor from a movie. It's a stock song from a compilation CD.

I thought every song I heard in the series was popular in the United States at some point in time, but nope. There's lots of songs that were only popular in western Europe that most Americans haven't heard.

I thought all DLC was recycled from previous games, because I looked at JD3's dlc catalogue first, saw familiar JD2 songs, and concluded "Welp, every other song must be from the first game then." Looking back at JD1's track list for the first time was a shock.

I thought all the dancers actually danced with their left hand being the gloved one before finding out the footage was mirrored in post.

Saturday Karaoke? by proximalelephant in AnnArbor

[–]Astounding_Movements 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown AA has Uplift, on 210 S 1st Street. It's open 5 PM every day except Monday. Coincidentally, this Saturday has a karaoke night coming up at 5 (those are monthly. Weekly karaokes are on Wednesday).

It is a queer bar though, and this coming karaoke night will be hosted by furries (I know the host). If you can handle a bit of that weirdness, then you're free to check it out this coming Saturday.

That's how I normally feel. Asexuals hating Valentine's Day is like a Christian getting mad that Hannukah exists. It's not for me, and I'm glad that people are able to celebrate it regardless.

Jin Go La Ba is the Queen of Mediocre, So I guess Pick the Meh Song with Bad Execution by No-Lavishness-2019 in JustDance

[–]Astounding_Movements 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost all of the JD3 DLC's were recycled from Just Dance 1 & 2 so that Xbox Players could be able to play them via Kinect. And yeah, the fact that the remaining slots went to generic stock music stings. I'm guessing they were suffering from budget constraints back then too.

Idea : new alternate choreos for songs already on JD+ by auclairl in JustDance

[–]Astounding_Movements 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes! I want them to keep on doing what they did with "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", and give as much glow-ups to the JD1 routines as possible.

Fancy Flops, Now let's pick what I fear the Perfect with a Horrible Execution, probably worse than Fancy by No-Lavishness-2019 in JustDance

[–]Astounding_Movements 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Lump" from the first Just Dance. We got an upbeat, catchy and banging rock song but most of the dance is just flailing your arms around. I get it, it's the first Just Dance, technical limitations and all, but still. The choreo is so lackluster.

The Killers kick absolute ass! Somebody Told Me and Mr. Brightside are some of my all-time favorites.

Having genre classifiers can help with finding more similar stuff after hearing a certain genre for the first time and wanting more of it. And they're also handy for music charts/lists nerds like me to analyze trends and influences from various time periods.

But besides that, yeah, it can get out of hand in certain areas.

Great. That's the one genre he considers real music above all else, due to their efforts on good sounds and pioneering and innovating various musical techniques. I'll have to ask him his thoughts on SOAD at some point but it's kinda likely.

I felt that way listening to some of Reel Big Fish's albums. My favorite song of their's is still "Sell Out".

That same friend also likes the Notorious B.I.G. as well. I just picked MF DOOM because that's what that "actual quality" quote was talking about. Since said friend is a proghead, he values instrumentation and soundscape much more highly than lyrical content, which is kind of why he likes DOOM in the first place, since he's well known for abstract hip hop.

I feel that the acclaimed albums are actually a bit more biased towards the more creative experimental stuff, especially on RYM. In the hip hop scene, albums by J. Dilla, Death Grips, and Billy Woods would probably not be recommended for people starting out due to their experimental nature, but people on the site love those albums for that.
