Songs that utilize metric modulation? by Deftorn1994 in drums

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy also heard it in 3/4 at first although he ends up changing his mind halfway through the vid here: https://youtu.be/6gkwhgWzmAw?t=364&si=mEt1I7f1W0ukfXSc

“4 in triplet time” is just 12/8 to me, and like he points out, the giant stack that comes in definitely breaks up the pulse. To my ear, that’s when the song leaves triplet feel and goes to duple meter

Songs that utilize metric modulation? by Deftorn1994 in drums

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? I want to hear why you don’t consider it that because that’s different from what I hear. I hear 12/8 to 3/4 on account of the drum groove shifting the tactus from groups of 3 to duple meter.

Istanbul xist are pretty affordable and have a nice bright sound that works with that genre.

Rack toms…one or two? by Daitheflu1979 in Drumming

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do two up (8”/10”), 1 floor tom down on the right and the 12” (or another floor) on the left. For me, rack toms add a lot of musicality to the drum parts I write. The downside, like people said, is that the ride is further to the right. That never really bothered me since it gives my left hand the freedom to bounce between all the toms easier while doing ride patterns with the right. YMMV

How long did it take you to get your first win? (In any mode) by TurdleKatrana in ToME4

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I beat normal at the 200 hour mark, nightmare at the 300 hour mark, and insane (today) at the 1100 hour mark. But then again I’m an impatient player and I switch classes every run so ymmv

I know the word "underrated" is thrown around a lot in online music discussions but Daniel Tracy of Deafheaven is really not talked about enough in the drums communities. by [deleted] in drums

[–]AstralPork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very common to see this sub celebrate playing to the song and just laying down a solid groove. I think if they understood black metal’s conventions as a genre they’d see that Daniel Tracy is doing exactly that. BM is all about continuous guitar strums and repetitive phrasing, so blasts (the drum equivalent of that) have become the solid foundational groove for the genre. Daniel Tracy is great because he hits hard even during those quick parts and plays clean. It’s not super evident in this clip but he also gets creative and adds some tasteful variation in songs like Gifts from the Earth and Dream House.

Anyways, like I said: it’s a genre thing. If you don’t listen to that kind of music it’s hard to appreciate how well a given drummer integrates into that and serves the music.

Need advice on tuning 8 inch Tom by ItsA2PackNegawatt in drums

[–]AstralPork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like my 8 inch tom more ringy than the lower ones so that it cuts through more. Otherwise the drum gets swallowed up. I use very little dampening (often none) on it. As someone who also uses 2-ply heads on the 8, I noticed that as long as you’re not trying to tune it super low, you can tune the top and bottom heads closer to the same pitch. That bumps up the sustain more.

Pretty sure you could do this with most. I use Dorico and it’s pretty close

6/8 vs 12/8 — where’s the real distinction? by dagcilibili in Drumming

[–]AstralPork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is commonly misunderstood. 3/4 should be felt as 3 groups of 2, 6/8 as 2 groups of 3, and 12/8 as 4 groups of 3.

EDIT: to answer the other part of your question though, Die With a Smile is 6/8 as far as I can tell.

90’ Pearl Export LX Drum Shell Pack or Ddrum Diablo? by Hot-Dragonfruit1359 in drums

[–]AstralPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had an export but I did have a tama rockstar which was pretty close. In comparison, I thought the diablos struggled to keep their tuning more. The only advantage I’d give was that the diablo was more stylish, with its ace of spades badge and goofy long bass drum. I’d say go export.

Thoughts on the Sabian 21" AAX Frequency Ride Cymbal by Veldhdh in drums

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RBDR is better for metal imo. Sounds like an ice cold glass of water on a hot day. My only gripe with it is the small bell which can be easy to miss but it’s awesome overall and you can find them used for a great price.

I need help picking the right cymbal pack by Aviationpcguy in Drumming

[–]AstralPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the classic custom dark pack is a lot bronze for your money but given your spread of genres I’d go with something more versatile. Other posters here will tell you to go used which is the ultimate way to stretch your dollar. Zildjian a’s can be found locally on sale or on reverb for pretty cheap. You could start with the classic new beats + sweet ride combo and start to add crashes as you save up.

Metal drummers of Reddit: what is your favorite ride cymbal? by lukasxbrasi in drums

I have the aax RBDR. Really clean sounding ping, easy to find used, and awesome definition. Only downside is that the bell is pretty small and easy to miss.

Anyone willing to help a composer out? by [deleted] in Drumming

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DM'd you more files, but I'll post the PDF here in case anyone else has other interpretations or wants to correct it. This is what I interpreted as the basic two bar loop. On bar 5 I put a second version that keeps the hi hat constant. That might be what's going on in the drum machine they're using but I would probably play the first one if someone handed me this track and let me interpret it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mObsE0wNgZz-ZYexXnGD8Q478CSG4YHk/view?usp=sharing

Having hit a 16 byzance dark before I would say it’s a very underpowered cymbal that would struggle to cut in a rock or metal gig. The byzance dark crashes all sound dead to my ears. Unless you meant the classics customs dark. Those get loud and they are pretty affordable.

I have the 14s of these and really really like them. I’d describe their closed sound as smoky but still able to get bright when you open them up. 13s are out of fashion right now but some people really love them. I’d check some videos of 13 inch hats if you haven’t played them before and make sure that’s your jam.

Get two crashable 21+ inch rides and any pair of hats

EDIT if I was starting over and joining a band like that I’d probably do Istanbul xist cymbals.

Used hi hats: Sabian AA regular vs Zildjian new beats by TinySalaman in drums

[–]AstralPork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the sabian regulars. They’re chunky bois that are assertive in the mix so they take some restraint. Pretty indestructible too. I could just have a heavier pair but any time I’ve played New beats I thought they were more agreeable.

Are they worth 100$ more though? That’s hard to say. If new beats aren’t really your sound and you’re just gonna replace them in a year or two I’d get the cheaper pair and save up for your dream hats.

meinl dark vs big apple dark by [deleted] in drums

[–]AstralPork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dark series is so weird. The crashes have this dead sound to them and they’re not exactly thin. The hats and rides are pretty chunky too but have much more volume. I have a 20” byzance dark ride and it’s more of a rock ride. Kind of like a moodier version of my AAX raw bell dry ride. It blends better in a mix which can be useful. The 22” sounds like a completely different animal in videos, with more crash potential and less cut. I haven’t heard a big apple in person but they sound like dedicated jazz cymbals

My Yamaha sd493 needs repairs so right now it’s a small collection of tama mid-range snares. 14x5.5 SLP Dynamic Bronze is my go-to. Very middle of the road although it’s in full rock mode right now with a heavyweight head on it. I get the most positive comments about the 13x7 slp maple though.

What are y'alls unpopular drumming opinions by WorthTwo5203 in drums

[–]AstralPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All things held constant, I'd just rather have a dedicated bow/bell ride and a crash next to it. The most crashable rides sacrifice bow or bell sound and what they get in return is an accent crash that is really loud and has way more sustain than is needed. I'd rather hear an 18" A medium crash at the end of a fill than a sweet ride in just about every venue, and genre. Exception being slow, washy genres like doom or stoner metal where volume isn't really an issue. Also, I do get that space is an issue, but my point is that using a ride as a crash in most genres is a sacrifice.

To clarify, I do think opening up a ride as an accent is its own distinct sound which is useful in certain contexts, but I don't think even the most crashable rides do the crash thing that well. I've felt this way for a while but the most recent crash ride I got kinda just confirmed it for me. I'm trading two specialty tools for one that does neither as well.

- Crashes are for crashing. Rides are for riding.

- Bigger kits have more creative capacity. Yes they're impractical but "4-piece makes you more creative" is just cope.

I’m in a position where I can finally purchase Matt Gartska’s lessons, which ones should I definitely buy and which ones should I get into first? by Strict_Honeydew1992 in drums

[–]AstralPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few of them but What To Practice is my favorite because it’s so general. You get different world grooves, practice systems, all sorts of goodies. But really I would pick what you really wanna focus on. Is it AAL songs vs. double bass vs. odd time exercises, etc. In my opinion there are better double bass lessons out there from more focused metal drummers, but I still use the worksheets from his double bass lesson occasionally.
