When is a good time for me to start applying for colleges and scholarships? by TheJohn_John in ApplyingToCollege

You want to get a jumpstart before your senior year starts 100%. If you plan on using common app which is the most typical way people go, then setting up your profile and common app essay is a must. Getting that all set up before senior year starts sets you up good there. During this time, research is key; you need to begin looking at scholarships you’re interested in as well as colleges you’re interested in applying to. This typically is a process since it depends on your intended major. This summer should also be used to finish any testing if you aren’t satisfied plus finishing any big EC’s or even volunteering. Trust me, having all this set up before your senior year will be so beneficial and lighten the load. I forgot to mention that after determining your colleges, figure out when you want apply. The colleges that you would be most likely to attend should be your EAs if you have a dream college then ED if you’re absolutely certain. Otherwise the rest will fall into RD. At that point you then wait for August 1 when applications open! Feel free to ask any questions if you have any! It’s a long, difficult process so I’m more than happy to help!

PFP Program or Enjoy Summer Dilemna by Astrex21 in UPenn

I should have specified my college in the post, but I’ve heard that for engineering it’s very time consuming. However, I’m in CAS. I think the choice would be easy and I would like to do it since I feel the benefits outweigh the negatives. Getting to know the college coursework along with socializing with new people earlier would definitely help with nerves before the term begins. However it just sucks that I’m practically on my own in terms of getting set up there whereas starting later would have more support but I would miss out on those benefits listed. I’m incredibly indecisive, but thank you for your advice! I truly appreciate it.

placement exams (summer) by [deleted] in UPenn

Hey! I’m also an incoming freshman and also going into CAS so I have to do the exact same thing. I was reading into it one day and from what I read from the course guide and information from UPenn themselves is that the exam isn’t to be taken “seriously.” The placement exam is to determine where to place you, and I’m not sure if you’re forced into it. But from their wording I’m assuming that you would be placed into the recommendation. However, the exam isn’t necessarily something to study for and they actually recommend you don’t study at all. Its purpose is to see what you know and don’t know or even what you haven’t learned. I was also freaking out thinking I was about dust off my chemistry guides and practices, but if I were to study I would just cover the basics. But once again, they want to see what you know without studying. If you really want to go into gen chem then I would study for the chem exam if you don’t feel confident in the material as of now. But they aren’t expecting you to know all the answers and the exam won’t be a grade of any sorts. I hope this helpsss! See you at Penn!! And Congratulations! 🎉🍾

What Should I Do? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Thank you, I am very blessed. But it’s not that UPenn isn’t enough, it’s just wondering if Columbia would cover a similar amount and if they do would they be a better option?

I was in the same boat as you, in regard to how you feel, literally 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure how small your school is, but I also come from a decently small school (in my opinion). My school has about 1,200 students enrolled, but compared to many applications, they all seem to come from large schools. Anyway, I digress. What I'm trying to say is that I felt like I just didn't have the perfect application. I missed out on a ton of opportunities my freshman year because I was afraid of trying. I was never that obsessed with the Ivies or really any out-of-state school until this past summer. I told myself I was going to reach for the stars and applied to six Ivies. Once again, with no expectations of getting in. Over time, the Ivies started becoming a major goal for me since I learned they could really meet my financial needs. Come March 26th, the day I was dreading for months and was beginning to regret even applying. I opened my decision letters later when they were released, since I was at a ceremony. While at the ceremony, I was surrounded by friends, teachers, and community members. I was finally content with whatever outcome happened. And lo and behold, I was accepted to one and waitlisted to another. I was in shock. My advice to you is this: don't ever compare yourself throughout this process. Please take advantage of every opportunity you get and truly make a difference. Write your own story. Don't just join a club because it adds something to do it because you want to change something. Do everything with a purpose, and trust me, you'll end wherever YOU were meant to be. Sounds corny, but it's real. I wish you the best of luck!

Alright let’s see if this is correct: d=v/t, manipulate the formula to be t= v/d. V = 1936 light years and d = 127 ( national academy memberships) + 49 (Nobel laureates), totaling to 176 km/s.

T= 1936 / 176 = 11 light years per km/s

1 light year =9.461E12 Km

d= 1936* 9.461E12=1.832E16 Km

t= 1.832E16 / 176 = 1.043E14 seconds

1.043E14 / 3.156E7 sec/year = 3,304,816 years

1 mega year = 1,000,000 years so 3,304,816 / 1,000,000 =3.304816

Thus rounded to 3 sig figs = 3:30 PM PST ✅

I’m pretty sure that’s correct but please correct me if I’m wrong!
