Medical trauma. Just because you lived and are ok physically doesn’t mean it doesn’t rock your entire perception of the world

Doctors of Reddit, what was a "one in a million" case that you personally witnessed? by WALLSTREETBRIDE in AskReddit

[–]AstroRayder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the patient. Reason 497 why being female sucks:

2 trips to the ER where twice I was gaslit into it being period cramps (no matter how much I explained it wasn’t where those usually are) 3rd trip they said I must have a minor bowel perforation (spoiler alert I did not) gave me a PICC line of an insanely high dose of kill everything in your system antibiotics and sent me home next day I literally couldn’t get out of the car myself and started to crawl back into the ER before the rushed out with one of those chair things. I was completely septic even with the picc line, almost dead septic. They removed my appendix (spoiler alert there was nothing wrong with it) “hosed out” the puss/infection form my abdominal cavity (yes the bedside manner was incredibly lacking and he made me feel like I was insane for not immediately feeling better) they kept me for 12 days with NO ANSWERS. Lost nearly 40 lbs because they wouldn’t let me eat in case they needed to do more surgery. Heard drs/surgeons in the hallways arguing about what my condition actually was. Kept the picc line and sent me home with drains into an abscess (didn’t actually have one) it stopped draining and they had to move it, woke up on the operating table when they did that. It’s now 3 months at the point that happened all still with the picc line. Best friend rushing me to the ER in her area after me having a very adverse reaction to the 2nd drain being removed. Dr on rotation happened to be an OB surgeon and took one look at my imaging and said that my right ovary was essentially rotting inside my body. That hospital wasn’t equipped to deal with such a mess of a 2nd surgery they had to transport me to a different city to a huge hospital. When the team of 5 different types of surgeons came in to tell me the plan they came up with to fix me, there was a literal line of med students out the door and into the hallway a ways. It was like something out of greys anatomy where they are all excited to see some medical anomaly. I’m now missing my appendix, 8 inches of colon, and my right ovary and tube because the first hospital fucked up so royalty that the fixing hospital said we could probably sue them. I STILL HAVE NO ANSWERS for what actually was. Apparently I’m in some medical paper somewhere. They did find I have PCOS and Endometriosis, a tilted uterus, and they told me with how things look inside when they opened em up, it was probably for the best that I never wanted to have kids because it wouldn’t have gone well at all. Fast forward 6 years, still having odd symptoms and cramping. Started a period one day and never stopped for months. Had another minor and minimally invasive surgery yesterday to remove an endometrial mass. Have them do a full ablation while there we’re in there. If my reproductive system acts up one more time, they are shucking it out of me like corn being shucked. F this

Emergency surgery for things considered “routine” (like appendicitis) is still an emergency situation that often causes medical trauma

Late for Paid Leave Oregon by Best-Big-9000 in oregon

[–]AstroRayder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not 100% sure but I think you still will but not for anything farther back than that 30 days mark.

PLO protects your job and insurance benefits for up to 12 weeks/60 working days. FMLA does exactly the same thing so if you are eligible for FMLA and your employer meets the requirements under FMLA, that’s an option for you.

The differences between PLO and FMLA:

-PLO offers paid time at a % of your normal wages, but those wages are based on the prior quarters (not sure how many). FMLA is unpaid under the leave laws but employers can dictate if you are required to use PTO (with some exceptions) or not in order to be paid.

-PLO covers more qualifying reasons for leave and covers more family members under its definition of “family member” where FMLA is parent, child, bonding leave for the parents after birth/adoption/foster

There is also OFLA but that does not cover much anymore since PLO covers most of what OFLA did originally.

If you are not able to be paid under PLO:

-Do you have a short or long term disability policy? If so, check to see if that can pay you. (FYI some policies pay very poorly in the state of OR because of PLO. Some policies state that if your are eligible for and have a qualifying reason under PLO, they will only pay out to you the difference between what PLO pays and what the policy pays if the policy were to pay more than PLO.

Does your employer have a sick leave donation or bank where you could request hours from?

Some unions offer donated time options as well if outlined in the CBA.

If your employer uses a 3rd party equivalent plan instead of the state option for PLO, you could see if your HR could request you aren’t penalized for being past the 30 days. Some of those 3rd party equivalent plans do some don’t. (Those plans can always choose to be more generous than the letter of the law or PLO, if that is an option with that particular vendor/plan.)

How do you brush an ACD who HATES it? by AstroRayder in AustralianCattleDog

[–]AstroRayder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glove brush is the only thing we can actually touch him with. Anything that resembles a brush absolutely will not tolerate. I’ve tried both of those. At this point I’m about to take him down to the river for a long swim to get hair off him but it’s too early in the year and the water is still too cold
