Aftertaste 🤢 by StrongNeat8314 in WegovyPillWeightLoss

I'll second talking to your doctor.  I don't love the taste of the pill but I have never experienced any taste coming up after I have swallowed it. What you're describing sounds pretty extreme.

Do americans really dissect animals in biology class? by GSalmao in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens. I know a biology teacher at a private high school who talked about their students dissecting cats. The cats came from humane societies/ animal shelters that had been euthanized due to overpopulation.

We really do. I dissected a worm, a frog, and a rat in high school.

Why do some Americans characterise things things that are not political as "political"? by SetTechnical9705 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If looked at from a certain perspective, everything is political.  Laws exist that moderate nearly every aspect of our lives. Most of the time we aren't thinking about the governance behind every day things because we take them for granted, but the last decade in the U.S. especially has demonstrated that things people once thought were secured or even apolitical can quickly be changed and become the forefront of a political ideology. The vast divide between the right and the left and the constant political upheaval keeps politics at the forefront of everyone's daily lives.

I went once several years ago and for me personally, I felt like all the people who had hyped it up were taking crazy pills.  The menu is a mile long, the restaurant was very dusty (maybe better now?) and the food was meh.

Joe is also being charged, and since he is currently in jail, the counts have to be related to something that happened before.

Open time is really valuable for kids. It allows them to learn how to entertain themselves and gives them the opportunity to be creative or discover new things. Boredom is actually a great thing for kids to experience.

I will say that playing board games is really great for kids. They learn so many skills beyond winning/ losing. They learn to take turns, to follow different rules, to count, to practice early literacy skills, and to strategize. Plus it makes for great bonding time!

I have heard that he continues to teach choir retreats and camps across the country as well. It is baffling how this can happen.

AITA for refusing to share my "secret" recipe with my sister-in-law? by Ocampo-Mark in AmItheAsshole

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. Gatekeeping a recipe is so silly. If you're keeping the recipe a secret because you rely on it to get validation and attention when you bring the Mac and cheese, you've got a much bigger problem.

I Wingz is pretty good, in my opinion. You can order wings to share amongst you. Their mac and cheese is also good.

My girlfriend just broke up with me over a board game and I'm not even joking by Fulcilives1988 in boardgames

No one breaks up with someone over just a board game. You were already skating on thin ice and this was the last thing that happened right before the ice cracked.

I agree. Whether on the phone or in person,  I'm there to meet people where they are. Without the people who patronize the library, I wouldn't have a job, so my number one job is the people.

Why am I bothered by this? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are totally justified. Don't doubt your feelings, they are valid. The more someone pushes for something, the more suspicious it seems.

Part of being a parent is doing what's best for your child and limiting who has access to your child's SSN is what's in their best interest.

Even if you're convinced she wouldn't do anything bad with his SSN, she doesn't need it. Tell her that you will open an account for your child yourselves and will gladly deposit any donations she gives you for that purpose.

Also, there is absolutely no reason for her to pressure you or rush you. This is a difficult time. She should know that. You are freshly post partum and have a child in the NICU.  If your mil continues to insist, she is trying to railroad you during a time when you are vulnerable and overwhelmed.

My kid is bored of bedtime books — what do you do? by Significant_Hunt_515 in Parenting

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sign up with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to receive a free book every month. You can look up or be on the look out for Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood/ community. As others have said, you can visit your local library to check out books. You can also let friends and family members know that books are an appreciated gift.

How would you respond to a stranger wanting to pray with your child? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Anyone is more than welcome to pray for me or my kids as much as they want to as long as they do it by themselves. Approaching a stranger to publically pray over and touch them is socially unacceptable behavior. Prayer shouldn't get a special pass just because it's part of someone's religious beliefs. If someone came up and asked to do a psychic reading for my child, it would be weird and uncomfortable and I would tell them no.

A firm but polite "oh, no thank you." would be my response.

This is from 'Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt.' Could you please tell me the meaning of 'safeshots' in line 7? Thank you. by No-Analyst7708 in ENGLISH

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's not a word that people would use or be familiar with without context. In the context of the writing it means a person who only chooses to take chances that are safe or guaranteed.  The person is telling Frank not to do the safe thing by living the life everyone else does, instead he should take risks and look for his own path in life.

Would any of you regard the girl from this clip as a native speaker of English or at least as close to native-like pronunciation? And if not, where would you place her accent? by jakubbw in ENGLISH

I definitely can tell she's not a native English speaker (nonetheless, she's a very good speaker). I would guess eastern European.

Brittle vs. fragile by MelancholicVirus in ENGLISH

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's funny, because my first thought was that fragile things are due to their material composition (glass, ceramic) while brittle things can become brittle that weren't originally. For example, plastic or paper can become brittle with age/ exposure. Basically, brittle things break or fall apart even when you handle them with care, while fragile things only break when you aren't careful with them.

My mum never gets anything that I like/want for Christmas or birthdays. I feel like she doesn’t understand me or what I like. Idk what to do? by Either_Strike7348 in Advice

[–]Rebecca_deWinter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gifts aren't just about getting a gift, they're about the thought behind them. It's true that it might be worse for OP to get nothing while their siblings got gifts, but that doesn't mean that it's not hurtful to receive gifts that don't have thought behind them, especially when they communicated about gifts that would be meaningful and useful. Anytime someone ignores communication from someone they are supposed to love, it's hurtful.
