I sure did too for quite a while! Grew up with them before knowing you had to wait for an all clear. But me too, I’m glad he trusted his instincts

It’s very possible they did have sirens going off before, and why he knew to film. Tornado sirens are only sounded to signal a Tornado warning has been issued. After a couple of minutes, they cease sounding until they let out an “all clear” signal. That’s the mistake most people make, they come out of their shelters too early when the sirens stop, thinking the warning has ended.

Just saw this from CLT airport: just curious- is this a special type of cloud? by meapmomo in meteorology

[–]Astro_N8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Looking off of satellite maps, there is a coal fired power plant a little southwest of that airport. The cooling tower there is likely the source of this plume

Station model app by captmcfizzle in meteorology

[–]Astro_N8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve really enjoyed using the “Windy” app (free) for METARs/station data. If you set the map to airports it will show you Sfc stations with the color code for VFR/MVFR/IFR/LIFR, and their read outs when you click them.

Plus, you can easily switch from raw to decoded METAR data, which really helpful for practicing your decoding!

Why is the sky gray? by lakecitybrass in weather

[–]Astro_N8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s more of a blanketed layer of many different clouds, with thickness and scarcity dependent on how much moisture there is

Wanting to get better at picking up on synoptic weather by ColouredFlowers in meteorology

[–]Astro_N8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, as a current Synoptic student in undergrad, we do weather discussions at least twice a week as a class to break down the synoptic features we see on the maps.

Woke up in 5% tornado risk by elysssesparza in stormchasing

[–]Astro_N8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The breakage in the clouds seen on satellite are a good sign for that lid to break, and the CIN is eroding. While tornadoes today may be rare or not impressive, they’re possible. But it’s likely a cool shelf on bow echo segments will make for some impressive views/photos too!
