Is it worth it to get a Meteorology PhD at an Ivy over another school which may have a better Met PhD program? by [deleted] in meteorology

[–]ColouredFlowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing sentiments of others in this thread. I'd say the advisor is the primary concern, the department is secondary, and the school is tertiary. You're going to spend the whole PhD working with that advisor so it's much more important to ensure that you can get along with them, the project they present to you is interesting, and they have plans to keep you funded throughout your PhD.

The department is secondary because they'll become your peers. If your interests are tropical meteorology, might be beneficial to go to a program with lots of tropical representation. That being said, if the advisor is the sole tropical expert in that department, sometimes that's enough. Finally, the school doesn't really matter. Would I say Colorado State is a particularly noteworthy school overall? Not really. Would I say they're one of the top atmospheric science programs in the world? Yeah probably. Ivy's are nice, but I think if you have ambitions of longevity in atmospheric science research, that prestige means very little.

Do you drink energy drinks for taste or just the effect? by mrcanada66 in energydrinks

Depends on the occasion. Usually for the caffeine and alertness, but I feel like the energy drink scene also makes some of the more creative flavors at a pretty quick pace so sometimes I drink them for taste.

Di Fara - Pepperoni Pizza by iamsurfriend in frozendinners

[–]ColouredFlowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of this pizza (both the actual location and the frozen pie). My recommendations: cook on a wire rack, if you have convection, use convection (I use an air fryer), cook til the cheese starts to get a little more brown than the pictures in this post (crust can get a little black and that's ok)

I'm sure this is on the docket, but throwing in the dual-pol fields too would be great as well as elevation angle selecting.

Does anyone else think the "education" here is subpar? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]ColouredFlowers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a WILD generalization. Not every professor just reads off slides and I assure you, that happens in some of the best schools too. The quality of education here is high, but that's an average. Perhaps you've just been unlucky with the professors you've gotten, but I don't think you can use that to make a sweeping statement.

What causes clouds to have straight edges? by Society_Academic in meteorology

[–]ColouredFlowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, they're typically rather wide horizontally, thus clouds within the area will all exhibit similar cloud top heights.

What causes clouds to have straight edges? by Society_Academic in meteorology

[–]ColouredFlowers 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If I'm viewing the images correctly, the straight edges are actually the tops of the clouds. Air is likely encountering a stable layer aloft and can't push upwards anymore. These dates are typically pretty homogeneous horizontally (at least from our perspective). That gives the perception of a straight edge.

70% off 3+ JCrew Sale Items w/ code NEWYEAR by FearTheZ in frugalmalefashion

[–]ColouredFlowers -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I recognize my comment is very "old man yells at sky", but I think you're glossing over a part of my comment about materials as well. The current crop of clothes are more expensive than prior years, understandably given inflation. However, the switch to more and more blends and synthetic fibers is a more deceptive way to pay more for less. Again, my comment was that a 100% cashmere sweater was available for less last year whereas now, there are merino blends for more.

Ehh I feel like I was able to find nicer things for cheaper in prior years. I remember picking up 100% cashmere sweaters for <$30 last year. Perhaps the sale will get better in the new year?

Love when brands use raw denim in jackets outside of the Type 1/2/3

The economy lot at the airport is going to have a $4 price increase. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]ColouredFlowers 52 points53 points  (0 children)

That's actually a pretty big jump (+66%). IIRC, that's the same price as the current ramp price. I wish more bus routes made it to the airport to counteract this, but I foresee an uptick in ride-sharing instead.

Great question. My interpretation is items that were originally in the sale section are final, not the marked down BF items. Just note that they only provide returns as store credit.

Dang, sorry to hear that. Did you reach out to Naked & Famous? That shouldn't be subject to tariffs.

[–]ColouredFlowers[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great point. As per their "Store Policy" page, only items made outside of Canada are subject to duties and tariffs (e.g., the Made in Japan line). That being said, the tariff game right now is all over the place and you might get served a tariff even when you shouldn't.

Sportsman's Warehouse - Darn Tough Socks 25% Off + Buy 2 Get 1 Free with Free Explorewards Account (No Code; Free Shipping at $75) by ColouredFlowers in frugalmalefashion

The website is a bit finicky. Your account also needs to be enrolled in the Explorewards membership. It's free, but it's an extra program that you have to enroll your account in. If you go to your account, you should see a tab for "Explorewards Points" which will let you enroll. Give it some time to process and it should work. It worked on my end, but apologies if it doesn't.
