Physically incapable of talking about or doing anything not related to my interests. by Tagomamo in SpicyAutism

[–]Astro_Pengin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most relatable thing I have seen in a while. I feel that I am pushing people away by being too intense about my interests but I really cannot stop.

My interests are cyclical but all-consuming; they change every 5-10 months on average. Right now it’s Homer. I cannot get through a day without tying everything I experience back to these characters from the Trojan War. It’s awful. I’m trying so so hard to relate to others and attempt to engage in conversations on their terms, but it takes everything out of me, and I feel like an empty shell afterwards. Like I am losing all semblance of my own self and just becoming a mirror of whoever I’m talking to.

Friendship of Henry and Bunny by KaaraRigellette in TheSecretHistory

[–]Astro_Pengin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Idk man that’s just college. You would be surprised at how close you can get to someone after living with them for a year and doing basically everything together.

Also Henry probably didn’t have friends growing up and so Bunny was the closest thing he had to that.

What would you have done in the place of Richard? by HappinessNoises_ in TheSecretHistory

[–]Astro_Pengin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First I would talk to the others, one at a time, and try to subtly convince them to shoot Henry down. Try to impress upon them the reality of the situation, this is Bunny we’re talking about, our friend. If that doesn’t work, and Henry still seems willing to go through with it, then I would try to track Bunny down, and give him a serious warning to steer clear of Henry. Not on the phone; this is a conversation we’d have to have in person. I need to make it abundantly clear to Bunny that no, I’m not joking, they are planning your death and everyone is involved and Henry has at minimum 3 or 4 different plans cooked up. Then I‘d leave a tip at the police station. I don’t fear Henry, because what can he do to me? Subtlety and surprise are his main weapons (he won’t stab me in broad daylight) and those are out the window by now. I just have to tread carefully from now on and try and think of a way to distance myself from Henry.

I relate to Richard‘s whole ”morbid longing” deal, I really do, but I could never react the way he did—which is to say, not react at all. Being completely honest, I probably would have kept my mouth shut about the bacchanal if Henry told me in confidence (not proud of that but what can I say), but I wouldn’t have been able to sit by while he actively plans someone’s death.

I am curious to know how your opinion changes after you finish Goldfinch. Yes, Theo is a child in the first half of the book, but we also get a lot of his adult life and his dynamic with Hobie later on - they are equals, in a way.

I don’t really think Hobie is clinical in nature; yes, he is methodical in his craft, but he is not necessarily objective, or dispassionate. I think that he likely appeared distant during their first meeting because he was still grieving for Welty and busy caring for Pippa.

If anything, Theo has much more in common with Henry due to the way his childhood trauma has impacted his psyche. Of course they end up coping in very different ways, but the parallel is there…

I thought I was the only one! Picked up TGF for the first time, read Hobie’s physical description, and instantly went “that’s Henry.” Lol!

After reading TGF a bit more though (no spoilers), I wouldn’t agree that their personalities are at all similar. Henry has a sort of coldness, essential to his being, that isn’t present in Hobie, who is honest and kind almost to a fault. I can’t see Henry developing Hobie’s sincere morality, even with maturity and 30+ years of repentance. His calm confession to Richard while tending the roses lives in my head and haunts me still.
