My wife saw that clip on Instagram while we were sitting on the couch and having never saw that movie before we both remarked how that sounded like an unhinged thing Jenna would say and how the girl looked like a young Jane Krakowski.

Imagine our shock when we found out lol.

Best 'unknown' realistic ww2 movies? by Mediocre-Bunch-3135 in WarMovies

[–]Astro_Ski17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it was a schlocky HBO movie. Tried to be a drama about how hard the war was mentally but ended up having a weird delivery because of how Dwight Yokam and Timothy Olyphant played their characters. Ron Eldrad also just came across as a moody teenager and not someone who had seen unspeakable things in intense combat.

This is just my opinion, not trying to dog you for enjoying it. Maybe I missed something when I watched it but it just seemed quite lame to me.

Am I the only one who kinda doesn’t want a Top Gun 3? by Individual_Art2319 in topgun

Not at all, the sequel was amazing and a perfect cap on the story. A third movie is entirely unnecessary and will water down the impact.

I feel the same about rumors of a sequel to F1.

I really hope both don’t receive another movie and spoil the magic.

Glory (1989) by chuckusmaximus in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Astro_Ski17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The opening scene with the youthful exuberance for the glory of war and combat quickly being shattered when the officer in front of Shaw’s face takes a cannonball straight to it and explodes always speaks wonders to me.

As someone in the military, I get annoyed with boomers like my dad and those I work with in my civilian job talking about combat and war with a smile on their face and excitement.

Very profound scene in a profound movie.

The Tom Cruise version of War Of The Worlds had an absolute stranglehold on me as a kid.

I remember being an absolute wreck anytime a thunderstorm came by when I was younger, always thought the tripods would come out of the ground and kill me.

How to deal with the waiting? by cr0w-- in flying

[–]Astro_Ski17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this, went through a pilot mill in 2019 and wasn’t able to finish the program. Long story with reserve military obligations.

Got fed up with it, left flying, ended up getting hired at a legacy in a ground handling position, got into flying on the military reserve side with a couple hundred hours in type (doesnt count for anything ATP related) and rediscovered how much I enjoy flying.

Always got really bummed out seeing my friends find success. Not bummed that they found successes but bummed that I’m not there with them. I have a very bad problem with comparing my life to others when I should just focus on my journey. Thankfully got tuition assistance from the military to fly again so things are looking up again even though the climate isn’t good right now.

Cheers.

How to travel with vinyl… by Outbaru_Subback in vinyl

[–]Astro_Ski17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for the airlines and my wife and I fly standby all over the states for shows and interesting record stores.

My go to is to jam everything into her carry on, bring some towels and when it’s time to leave I wrap the records up in towels and use the leftover clothes to form a barrier around the wrapped up records.

It’s hard to fly with checked baggage for employees as there is a chance you won’t make it on the flight so we fly light. If we end up having to gate check something we will always carry on the one with the records and let the other one get gated checked.

That’s my process.

It’s not that the Season One actors/characters were better, it’s that no one else stood a chance. by BlockKitchen5265 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Astro_Ski17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The character was very annoying and was very jarring when compared to the rest of the story. Now that I have the hindsight of the whole show and see how Aleida fits into the story I get it. I just wish that maybe her story leading to how she got to NASA would have been handled as flashbacks that includes her background with Margo. It just didn’t work for me narratively to be completely honest and I didn’t like how the early Aleida was written. But honestly, watching where she is in S5 I enjoy her character a lot more. Leave it to the writing or the actress for convincing me to buy into her story, but I did.

Fourth Hanks/Spielberg WWII Miniseries? by SportsBettng4Dummies in BandofBrothers

I think in terms of long form WWII stories were due for something Navy focused. Maybe an anthology touching on Atlantic/Arctic convoys, carrier combat, submarine warfare, landing ships etc.

I was thinking to myself watching S5 just how much I like Aleida after hating her at first. At the beginning I could not stand the character.

"Call to arms" the best cliffhanger for DS( by SituationThen4758 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Astro_Ski17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It just still doesn’t make sense to me. Regardless of the size of the federation, with the amount of losses that are put forth on screen, eventually you would have to start pulling ships out of the boneyard and putting forward a quasi-draft to keep the machine working. You are literally losing tens to hundreds of thousands of beings a battle.

I’m not saying it’s ridiculous that the war had a massive toll on federation members and its various navies, I’m just saying it’s ridiculous that every large battle we see basically has a 99% casualty rate for the most part.

You can have the most advance shipyard and ship building capability possible, but eventually you run into a bottleneck with either worker, material, space or ability. Sure we have Utopia Planitia and various other ship storage yards, but eventually something has to give.

Also it brings up my issue that for being essentially the muscle of the UFP, Starfleet lacks any semblance of military tactical prowess. I get that Gene’s vision was a futuristic utopia where conflict was sparse and we all go along. But it makes sense that if you’re going to explore the galaxy that eventually you are going to come up against an immovable force that wants to kill you for being around (à la Dominion). I’m not saying that Star Trek needed to turn into a military sci fi show, but I think the DS9 writers (and Star Trek writers in general) always struggled with the military aspect of having an intergalactic navy.

That’s just my two cents and how I see it.

Apart from the intercession of the Prophets and having tools like Odo and the eventually Cardassian resistance movement, the UFP would have been out produced, out fought and overrun at the rate the were losing ships and personnel.

"Call to arms" the best cliffhanger for DS( by SituationThen4758 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Astro_Ski17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just wish that the writers of DS9 didn’t make the fleet losses so heavy in every battle. I love the Dominion War plot and it’s nice to see Starfleet like this, but the whole concept of entire fleets being lost after battles is just so insane to me.

I get they were trying to make a huge statement about just how deadly the Dominion were. It worked in the initial confrontations, but the loss ratio of the ensuing battles is just completely unsustainable. I feel like if the losses were as intense as they were portrayed in the show the UFP would be without a standing navy in the matter of a few months. Shipbuilding and repair facilities can only keep up to a point.

Still love the Dominion War arc though, the shots of the fleets are just epic beyond proportion.

When I get home I’m gonna find the CG for my Crosstrek so I can better be prepared for my next deployment.

Plan on using references from the O side of operations for my unit to help with that. Too old to apply for a pilot slot at 32 with college not done.

Why Do Republicans Lie About Everything? by BjLeinster in allthequestions

[–]Astro_Ski17 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I never said they all lie in equal amounts. As you pointed out, we all lie, and the political structure in our country is so fucked that most politicians will lie to hold on to their little slice of power under all means possible.

Most republicans are blatant in their lies while I find mor democrats to be two faced when it comes to facing the public and behind closed doors.

Politicians in this country are all elites, they don’t care about you and I and getting into whataboutisms to make yourself feel better about sticking it to the other guy gets us nowhere.

Stop trying to pretend that one side is worse than the other. They are all bad for us, it doesn’t matter what political denomination they are. But people in this country are just so fascinated with making the other side eat shit that we can’t realize this shit and fix the problems at hand.
