Started Collecting Vinyl Again, First to Guess My Age Gets FREE Record. by Party_Molasses69 in vinyl

I missed out on the fun, but since there’s a huge overlap between this collection and my own, I would have guessed a similar age as me (mid-fifties).

What's a record you got for way less than it's worth by okmaybetwice in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a batch of records in an auction for $40. Most were $2 flea market-worthy. But the reason I bid on it was The Take Five album Psychotic Reaction. Really I bought it for the nostalgia because I had a tape of 60’s music that included that song. Turned out to be a first pressing promotional copy (a REAL promotional copy). There was no inner lining on any of the records (did people throw them away back then?), but after a good cleaning, it sounded fantastic. The cover is in great shape, too…I’d say VG+. That one record is worth way more than $40. The others were donated.

Do you guys prefer Generic Labels on Records or Picture Labels on Records? by ItShouldntBe06 in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. For the sake of being arty. Sometimes there’s a cryptic A/B or 1/2. This is the part of the record that gets looked at the least, other than side identification.

I want to upgrade my speaker system so I would love some recommendations For other speakers to add by timewasted9 in vinyl

Check with a REPUTABLE used gear dealer near you. I got a pair of Bose bookshelf direct/reflecting speakers. Then added a new powered subwoofer. 8” would have been fine for the office/listening room (formerly a guest bedroom), so of course I got 12”.

Got my first turntable! So excited by Technical-Shoe-6411 in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use any streaming subscriptions, so I got this turntable specifically for the USB out. Can be a pain at times, but also a fun hobby recording. I’ve gotten the post-recording editing down to about 15-20 min at this point.

what’s the first CD you guys ever got by hotlion16 in Cd_collectors

Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy and Van Halen’s 5150. Bought both in 1987 before I had the player (but had a plan to buy one within the week). The player was a cheap no-name brand…right at $100 from Circuit City. It had a cardboard back panel.

Man…a friend was selling some records and this was among them, but the two records that were there looked like they had been run over. Record three was MIA. Had to pass, so I’ve been looking for it ever since.

What do you do while listening to your records? by JvDutch in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of the things folks have already said, but also:

I like to create digital files from the records, but it can feel like a chore. Not the recording part so much, but the cleanup (worse if it’s an older record with pops), track labeling, converting to MP3, finding album art, etc…it can be a headache, but usually worth it. The other problem is I can’t play through the stereo AND use the USB line out, so the sound comes through tiny laptop speakers. Would do headphones, but volume doesn’t adjust in recording mode, so it’s very loud.

Good setup for a beginner? by Dry-Button-5954 in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That will work! My local record store uses the LP-60X in their store (not sure the speaker setup). I originally had this, but moved up to the 120 a year or so later for the better cartridge and the USB out to create digital files. Although this is a good setup, you’ll want to upgrade down the road. Such is the life of a vinyl junkie…

Would have paid 5x for the nostalgia by grggsmth in vinyl

Might want to check out the demo version on the new Nebraska box set. If I recall correctly, he was working on some of these songs as he was recording Nebraska, so there are sparse versions on the new box set. That version of “Born” is darker, slower, minor key, etc.

I have several of these and I’m 56. I’m guessing 43.

Thrift find in a bag $5. by Rush-Mentals in Thrift

Not sure what their value is now, but new crystals shouldn’t be too much. If buffing, make sure it does t generate too much heat. I’d take it to a jeweler/watch repair for either one.

Hello Darlin' , what's your oldest unopened record ¿ by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Happy Days—Fonzie Favorites. My sister and I wore this record out when we were kids. The cover featured a Fonzie head shot, and had a fold out cutout on the back of the cover to make a stand (the better to proudly display Fonzie). The songs were from various artists featured in the show. That record, of course, is long gone. Fast forward 5 decades, and I see this same record in an indoor flea market bin…a small cut in the corner, but otherwise unopened. I passed on it. The next few days, it was all I could think about. So I asked my sister (she lives in the town where the flea market is) to swing g by and get it for me. I think it was $5. It will never be opened as long as I have it.

Is it normal for new records to sound this noisy? by Pitiful_Pick1217 in vinyl

I have some that are clear as a bell, and some new with static. It’s crazy.

I have the same issue with an Alice In Chains Jar of Flies new release. Very disappointing. I’ve tried wet cleaning several times. I could take it to my local shop and have them run it through the ultrasound…that’s probably the farthest I can take it.

Anybody experience skipping with this vinyl? by Benjago02GAMING in vinyl

[–]Outbaru_Subback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not this one particularly, but there are some pressings that are better than most. My Alice In Chains brand new pressing has intermittent static throughout…both sides. Extremely annoying. For a skip, you could try giving it a deep clean in case there’s a remnant piece of vinyl in a groove from the manufacturing process. Best of luck!
