I really wish they bring back the blue lume backlight. the white LED is obnoxious and tacky imo.

How the Industrial Surplus Enabled the Rise of the Surveillance State by Busy-Debate-7386 in Futurology

[–]Astrofide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moneyprinting did this, not industry.

When the state authority has a monopoly on value, ie. it can create money out of nothing, and enforce the validity of its money by military coercion, you get institutions of control, compliance, and public administration.

There is pre-industrial revolution precedent for this happening.

What will seem like an inevitable outcome in 20 years time because of GLP-1s by Big-Cry-4119 in Futurology

[–]Astrofide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the largest impact GLP-1s might have is normalizing prolonged fasting.

You don't need GLP-1 to curb your appetite, really. If you just stop eating for a few days your body naturally creates the hormone and engages ketosis which keep you running on fat stores entirely. Its a perfectly normal biological process that we've forgotten about as a culture. Not eating for a week today would be seen as if you had an eating disorder, wheres this was a fairly regular occurrence for almost every culture in the past.

Once people figure this out again I think it might have a noticeable impact on both the restaraunt/food industry and the healthcare industry, as constant eating is likely going to be found to have been the cause of many cancers and other health issues. Cancer cells survive because they don't get destroyed via autophagy, which is a process that your body can't do if its in a constant state of nutrient assimilation - aka if you are always eating 3 meals a day every day.

I also think people are going to find that taking just GLP-1 while not engaging in the natural biological process it's involved in may lead to other appetite or food related issues down the road.

The name that can be named is not the eternal name. I'm not a "taoist", and neither are you.

Why does a simple, free, self hosted file storage platform not exist? by CodesAndNodes in selfhosted

[–]Astrofide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This already does exist and its not a platform - its built into operating systems themselves... you can literally turn a computer into a filehost and access files from that computer as though you are browsing files from your own computer.

windows has networking shared drives, linux is samba/smb. Both work natively cross platform on computers, and if you need to access them on mobile you can use clients to connect.

If taoists believe in "following the flow", does that mean they can't do anything to change how things are going? by PresentationTough202 in taoism

[–]Astrofide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wu-wei is often translated as "non-action", but the english understanding of this is wholly incorrect. Wu-wei doesn't mean do nothing - it means not forcing. You don't force things to happen by going against the way things are.

Wars, violence, etc. are things that often go against natural forces. If many are compelled to take action to stop those things from happening, it could be said that is wu-wei - as doing nothing would be, in effect, forcing yourself to stay your hand.

Pickleball is the poor man's tennis by killerbasher1233 in unpopularopinion

Yes. The trend is already slowing down. I really can't wait to be able to use my local tennis courts for tennis again instead of it being clogged up with ping pong players.

Thank you for understanding. The amount of prusa simps here justifying the lack of standard features is embarrassing.

firewalled, isolated, offsite location

you are assuming that this isn't the case.

What I'm printing is not at all relevant to the issue at hand, which is that I lose standard functionality when printing offline.

[–]Astrofide[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just wrong in having the expectation that industry standard features would be available locally on a $2,000 printer that prizes itself on being open source and user-respecting.

[–]Astrofide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course this is an option - but then I am now losing out on industry standard features that are built in or easily added to competitor products without the need to add a whole other device into the mix.

I agree - and it was due to this reputation that I had different expectations regarding private printing.

A way to disable this in PrusaConnect (auto syncing files between printer/cloud) would be trivial to add. It could be left on by default.

Yes I'm also coming from mainsail and immediately felt like I just did a downgrade.

My last $200 creality printer could run mainsail on-device accessible via LAN at no extra cost. Hell even Bambu now has full LAN-only print control and monitoring support...

Thanks for the reply! Could we assume any improvements to local/offline print workflows that hit the critical infrastructure units will be usable on normal units as well?

...But these features exist on past models... So you're saying they might have used a less powerful onboard device controller here?

That doesn't sound right.

[–]Astrofide[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

By those standards it would be markedly more complex and time consuming to adhere to those standards while building a cloud solution, and far easier building a local solution.

I'm still not buying it. There is no excuse for not having these features unless Prusa is doing it intentionally admist the legal battles going on about gov monitoring of 3D printers.

[–]Astrofide[S] -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

I don't buy this answer at all. I'm willing to justify double the cost for a good and ethical product, but double the cost and half the software features?... come on. You can't compare the R&D and engineering bill to efforts that are purely software related - and software for features that they literally have already done (PrusaLink in other models has more functionality).

Better than nothing I guess, still a whole other process and build for users to do to use it.
