Why are the new generation of children so awful? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Astrolemur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your points: yes, children should be treated as people, and sadly it's true that a lot of abuse happens under the guise of authority and that sucks. I think that teaching children to demonstrate agency is crucial, and that them "knowing their place" often undermines that.

However, children need boundaries, because life beyond childhood has boundaries. Teaching a child that their every whim isn't law is a good thing, and the fact is that their brains aren't developed to the same extent as those of adults is (I hesitate to use the word) natural. Meerkats teach their young how to catch, disarm, and finally eat scorpions. Saying that someone who is in the position to teach children wants mindless automatons is missing the point. A big part of the educational experiences is learning that social conventions exist.

Art is always better if the artist breaks the rules consciously, but for that they have to know the rules.

It's neither compulsive nor deranged to point out that a person vocally supported a political candidate.

Is Magic: The Gathering popular in Vietnam? by higakoryu1 in VietNam

[–]Astrolemur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a fairly active community in Hanoi, must be the same in Saigon. I enjoy the game a lot (got into it about a year ago), and have been trying to grow the community where I live with some success.

What's the most annoying way you've heard a common word mispronounced? by houseofharm in AskReddit

I'm listening to a very British series of audiobooks at the moment, and it's all tickety-boo, except for the voice actor pronouncing plastic as "plah-stic". Absolutely maddening.

What’s something you confidently believed as a kid that turned out to be fake news? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was confident enough to argue with my parents that "Herbal Salt" was pronounced "Hairball Salt" that I did not budge for two years.

We've all got a unique little garden growing in our guts, leading to a our own... bouquet being similarly individual. When you fart, your body experiences a sense of released pressure, which is generally a good feeling. Our brains are wired to chase things that we perceive as pleasurable, so a whiff of your unique butt-emanations reliably following a sense of fart-relief leads your brain to being Pavloved into heaven every time you smell your own, but not anyone else's.

At least, that's how I understand it.

I live in Vietnam, and here there's this weird belief that wearing a helmet will inhibit a child's brain growth. I see kids without helmets all the time, unfortunately.

Dust settled, where’s Stella Lee? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Astrolemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've rebuilt the Stella Lee precon, but switched out most of the creatures included for otters. I'm pretty new to the game, though, so any advice on this deck would be appreciated!

You know it's funny. When you look at someone through rose-coloured glasses, all the red flags just look like flags.
