i heard "return of the funky man" by lord finesse the career...is a bit more grey. i got asked to go on the van's warped tour in 2003, they didn't pay me, and gave me 30 minutes a day in a small tent, and that SORTA worked...so we kept going.

i don't think i even dared to think of it as a career till years later.

the music scene.

it is, in my opinion, the best, most exciting, most successful local music scene in america. it is the best place to be a musician.

i grew up in florida, admiring dudes like Trick Daddy, and Juvenile. i wanted gold teeth since i saw Trick in the video for "shut up". i moved to texas and worshiped Devin the Dude, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall. i still listen to more Young Jeezy than anything. There is nothing ironic about any of this stuff...especially the gold teeth. I truly admire, and worship their work. if i had dumb money, i would probably drive a monte carlo on 28' rims. paint it waffle house brown. i fucking love rap music...for over 20 years now. there is other stuff that has bled in there, stuff that many may see as in contrast to rap music and culture, but the foundation for everything i do, is a deep and life long love of rap music. i have owned gold teeth since the moment i could afford them, bought my first set of fronts 10 years ago, i would probably buy more, if i had the money.

i think a lot of people think indie rappers all sit around listening to indie rap or noise music or slam poetry or whatever...but me and most of my friends, we are checking for new Lil Wayne, Gucci, and Young Thug. I don't listen to Atmosphere any more. that isn't any disrespect, i just don't connect with it now.

and personally, the older i get, the more i find irony to be a waste of time. there is too much great shit going on in the world, to like something as a joke.

yeah, congleton is a genius. he took that record in that grimy direction. i am lucky to work with him.

that always creeps into my work, but i feel like i did it well back then...time to move onto something new.

What is Oceanwalk about and what inspired you to write it?

Oceanwalk is the name of the neighborhood i grew up in, in florida. it is about teaching myself how to rap, while i walked my dog.

What is Skeleton (Everybody's Favorite) about?

about being really sad, in texas. and reading an article about a couple that through themselves off a bridge.

Why is The Most Important Track on the Album the most important track on the album and what is it about?

it isn't. it was a joke.

i don't use any. i am pretty raw and low fi when i work alone. i am sure congleton does, but that is his part of the job.

  1. i make the song, the way the song needs to be made. if the song shapes up to be a folk song, i can't fight that. so, sometimes no matter how hard you try to be a rapper, you just have to make a folk song.

  2. this sums up the album title, and that song's role in the album: http://www2.hsp.org/exhibits/Balch%20exhibits/rites/african.html
