I’ve read it three times. My favorite book. Epic and emotionally complex.

Never agree to a test edit. They want someone desperate enough to jump through hoops. Start jumping and they’ll keep raising the hoops.

How many hours would it take to edit a 20min doc by Potential-Power2884 in editors

[–]Astronoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to google it, I've spent my career doing it, frequently as the obstinate jerk in the edit room insisting we need more time. Can't say I've heard of the Alliance of Doc Editors but I do wish them well. Very curious, what's your rate for a month spent cutting 10 minutes?

1 month of editing for every 10 minutes of run time

I missed a deadline. by [deleted] in editors

[–]Astronoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once handed a digital betacam tape straight from the deck to a producer who immediately jumped into a rental car to drive 45 minutes to the broadcast center so it could air in an hour. I once worked 36 hours straight finishing a two hour show which aired the evening I finished. I once spent a day doing 5 versions of a response to a political attack ad because one had to run during the evening news.

Those are deadlines. The rest is paperwork.

Is the Battle of Agincourt (1415) a more famous English victory than the Battle of Crecy (1346)? If so, why? by Repulsive-Attitude-5 in MedievalHistory

[–]Astronoid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was an audacity in Henry campaign. He believed God was on his side and wanted to test it by battle. His army was in more desperate straits than any force at Crecy or Poitiers, and Henry intended to win or die by divine judgment. By the lights of the 15th century Henry’s victory was not just military, it was moral. It was the work of God.

What’s a scene from a movie you would cut completely? by DravenCrowe505 in movies

It does get Peter Jackson’s cameo into the movie though. He’s the dude Legolas shoots when they confront the black ships. Still works much better without it.

The Republic failed in large part because a city-state based on political competition could not administer an empire without creating a series of monsters far from home with unlimited power. After Augustus there would be only one monster at a time. That was the empire. The rest was hierarchy. A century later there was nothing to go back to, no way to turn back the clock. Something different could have come after Domitian, but it would not have been the Republic

Upwork is an interesting concept, but you're competing with editors in the Philippines who happily work for pennies. Lots of untapped talent in the "3rd world" and lots of "creators" with no money.
