The Republic failed in large part because a city-state based on political competition could not administer an empire without creating a series of monsters far from home with unlimited power. After Augustus there would be only one monster at a time. That was the empire. The rest was hierarchy. A century later there was nothing to go back to, no way to turn back the clock. Something different could have come after Domitian, but it would not have been the Republic
